id Software and Nightdive Studios have a history of announcing remasters of classic games during the yearly QuakeCon events.

It looks like Nightdive Studios – a developer known for its work in video game preservation, thanks to its remasters of classic titles – might be working on bringing back more classic Quake games in remastered form. While the studio hasn’t made an official statement about this year, a pinned comment during one of its recent livestreams included a tease of, at minimum, Quake 3 Arena getting a remaster.

As spotted by Reddit user kjurban, the comment by Nightdive said “All eyes, I mean Orbbs will be on that announcement lolol.” For context, Orbb is one of the new playable characters from Quake 3 Arena. The character is essentially a large eyeball on a small metal body with organic legs.

This report would indicate that the announcement by Nightdive Studios will likely happen at the upcoming QuakeCon – a yearly event that celebrates games made by id Software, both modern and classic. Traditionally, QuakeCon has served as a home to quite a few classic game announcements, including the Nightdive-developed enhanced release of classic shooter Quake 2, which was unveiled at QuakeCon 2023.

Considering Nightdive’s history with remastering classic games to modern audiences, complete with quite a lot of work to ensuring they work well with modern hardware, the studio seems like the obvious choice to bring back the multiplayer-only Quake 3 Arena.

When it was originally released back in 1999, Quake 3 Arena broke the trends set by its predecessors by being multiplayer-only. A single-player game mode was available, which pit players against AI-controlled characters in the various multiplayer maps and modes that the game launched with.

As was tradition for id Software at the time, Quake 3 Arena also served as the introduction to several new graphical technologies for the series. This included spline-based curved surfaces, allowing for more varied level design, as well as advanced AI with more difficulty options.

Quake 3 Arena was quite popular when it was first released, eventually spawning a dedicated player base that these days lives on through Quake Live. It would get quite a bit of support over the years, both from id Software thanks to the release of the Quake 3: Team Arena expansion, which brought in a host of team-based game modes and maps, as well as from the community itself, which made several maps and mods for the game.

Nightdive Studios is relatively fresh off the release of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, which came out on PC back in June. The console version of the game – available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch – was released just a month later in July.

For more details about the remastered classic sci-fi horror game, check out our review, where we gave it a score of 9 out of 10, praising the gameplay, narrative, pacing, and revamped visuals, while criticising weapon degradation and some skills being poorly balanced.

A remastered version of the classic first person shooter has been rated by the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea.

Quake fans have long been hoping for a revival of the franchise in similar fashion to fellow legendary id shooters like DOOM and Wolfenstein have enjoyed in recent years, and though one hasn’t been forthcoming, classic shooter series has still had some time in the sun in the recent past. In 2021, at QuakeCon, id Software and Bethesda announced and released a remastered and expanded version of the original Quake, and if you’ve been desperate for more of that, there might be good news for you on the horizon.

As spotted by Gematsu, a certification rating for Quake 2 Remastered has been spotted on the website of the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea. Though a remastered of the shooter hasn’t been officially announced, a rating would seem to indicate that a reveal could be around the corner, especially given the fact that QuakeCon 2023 is set for August.

It’s worth remembering that 2021’s Quake remaster also got leaked via certification ratings prior to its official announcement. Whether a Quake 2 remaster, if it does get announced, also feature additional new content developed by MachineGames like the 2021 release did remains to be seen.

The annual QuakeCon will be making its return as a digital-only event, with plans to return as an in-person event next year already underway.

People who enjoy QuakeCon, there’s good news for you- the annual from Bethesda and id Software is coming back for its 2022 edition on August 18 and will run till August 20. Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to attend in-person, since it’s been confirmed as a digital-only show.

It was announced via the official QuakeCon Twitter that the event is to a digital model this year because the company feels that more planning is required to host such an event successfully in-person thanks to uncertainties surrounding COVID, and Bethesda wasn’t confident it’d be able to do it properly this year. The convention, however, is planning to get back to its usual in-person format next year, and plans for the sameare already underway.

For the uninitiated, QuakeCon is the annual convention-cum-showcase hosted by Bethesda, which showcases new and upcoming games made by Bethesda-owned studios. The 2020 QuakeCon event was cancelled due to COVID, while last year’s show was also a virtual event.

Like so many things, the gaming industry was hit hard by COVID-19. From delayed games, huge unemployment, to the cancellation of major events. Once industry-anchoring shows like E3, Gamescom and TGS have either been canceled or refitted into digital events. One such show was the annual QuakeCon, which was canceled earlier in the year. Thankfully, for fans, it will get a digital counterpart in Quakecon at Home.

As announced via the official website, this year’s QuakeCon will be the first that comes directly to your home. The event will be a 3 day streaming event, and will include eSport Tournaments, charity streams and for the first time ever the ability to pre-order your own QuakeCon swag from your home, with some items proceeds going toward charity.

QuakeCon at Home 2020 will begin on August 7th and run until the 9th. For full details and links to the store to purchase swag, follow the link through here.

Bethesda has announced that QuakeCon 2018, this year’s edition of the annual convention they hold for id Software’s games, will be held in August- specifically, it will run from August 9 to August 12 this year, and it will be held in Dallas. If you want to attend the event for yourself, it will be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center- so you know where to be.

Entry to the convention will be absolutely free, and you will also be able to get discounted rates for hotels if you reference the event. As always, there will also be a Bring Your Own Computer tournament held.

That said, Bethesda has not yet announced the lineup of games or exhibitors who will be showing up this year- hopefully, that is information we can expect some time soon. Maybe it includes some games Bethesda is planning to announce at E3 this year- they do have a very large amount of floor space booked for their booth, after all.

Bethesda today announced next year’s dates for its annual QuakeCon event; like with every year, the world’s largest Bring Your Own Computer LAN party event will be held in Dallas next year, from August 4 through to August 7.

In addition to the multiplayer bonanza that QuakeCon offers PC gamers, there is also a lot more on offer; the event will have multiple panels, presentations, and workshops; additionally, Bethesda will be showcasing their upcoming games to fans in attendance. Plus, a variety of top technology companies will be exhibiting the latest in gaming accessories and hardware.

On the whole, though, if you want the latest and greatest news on upcoming Bethesda games (and this includes games from their subsidiaries, such as id Software, or Arkane), QuakeCon is really what you want to look at.

QuakeCon will be held at The Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, so if you want to make sure you get in next year, you can get the jump right now by booking a suite for yourself for the weekend there.

Or you can just stay tuned to GamingBolt, because you know we’ll have all the latest and greatest news for you from there anyway.

Curious why Bethesda didn't opt for id Software's engine? Here's why.

Bethesda Softworks has made an impression with Fallout 4 but no one can deny that the initial impression was how it didn’t quite look as good as, say, Batman: Arkham Knight or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines offered his own reasoning for Fallout 4’s visuals, stating that no game offered the kind of interactivity that it did. Speaking to AusGamers after QuakeCon, Hines was asked whether id Tech was ever under consideration for adding that extra level of beauty.

As it turns out, it wasn’t. “No, because of moveable objects [in Fallout 4]. Doom has interactive stuff, but it doesn’t account for hundreds and thousands of little items that you can pick up and move and they’re all individual. It’s not suited for a game where you want to have thousands [of items] and clutter the world with all this stuff that’s all interactive and has physics. It’s just not what it’s for.”

That being said, id Software does contribute in other ways. “It doesn’t mean there’s not things that the id guys are doing that aren’t applicable. Like, ‘How did you solve this? In this scene, what are you doing here?’ There’s a million things on the much more granular level, like, ‘Maybe we want to add this thing to our engine or borrow this thing that you do in Doom or The Evil Within,’ or whatever, ‘And we’ll write our own version of that that works on our engine or solves our problem’.”

The huge amount of interactivity and the sheer breadth of the open world also opens up a potential can of worms…or bugs, as the case would be. However, it’s also that breadth and the level of things to interact with that “makes the game awesome, because it is real and those [objects] are real things that you can pick up and move, and you can take your bobble heads and arrange them neatly and roll wheels of cheese down a hill by the thousands. That’s part of what makes the game fun, is all of the stuff that you’re allowed to do in these virtual worlds.”

Fallout 4 will be out on November 10th for PS4, Xbox One and PC. What are your thoughts on what Bethesda is promising? Let us know in the comments.

ZeniMax Online Studios is pushing forward with The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. The series has seen a revival of sorts with the recent PS4/Xbox One releases and during a panel at QuakeCon, the developer has announced plans to release quarterly DLC packs.

Some of those packs, releasing next year, will introduce the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild into ESO, an omission which players have been complaining about for a while. The Imperial City DLC will be out on August 31st for PC/Mac and September 15th for PS4/Xbox One. However, public test servers should get their hands on it and the upcoming patch next week.

After the release of Imperial City, there will be the Orsinium pack releasing in the Fall which apparently offers 25 hours of content for players. Pricing hasn’t been discussed for this or future DLC but Imperial City will retail for $20 when it’s out. One can also pick up an ESO Plus subscription and receive the DLCs as part of this. It’s not a bad deal for each pack since there’s no longer any mandatory subscription and the packs offer much more content then some other games.

Custom single-player campaigns to function more as playlists than true stories.

Looking to saddle up with a partner for id Software’s upcoming reboot of Doom? You’ll have to stick to custom maps for the same since executive producer Marty Stratton has confirmed at this past weekend’s QuakeCon that the main campaign mode will not support co-op.

However, this doesn’t mean there won’t be any co-op play at all. It will just have to be in custom maps created through SnapMap, which is the modding tool used for Doom. It won’t quite be a proper campaign per se either.

When asked by PC Gamer if SnapMap could create single-player campaigns, Stratton said, “Yes. In a sense. You create a level experience, and then to create a campaign-type thing you would link those [levels] together in, like, a playlist. You wouldn’t necessarily carry weapons from one level to the next. The author could set it up knowing you have this set of weapons as you go into this next component. It’s little bit more like a playlist.”

This may change before the game’s release though as Stratton says, “This is probably something we’ll think about for future iterations.” So a fully featured custom campaign could be on the horizon yet.

Doom is in development for PC, PS4 and Xbox One and will be out in Q1/Q2 2016.

Yes, even Fallout Tactics.

To further prepare players for the release of Fallout 4 in November, Bethesda Softworks announced the Fallout Anthology during Quakecon’s welcome speech.

Fallout Anthology will include all games in the series for $49.99 in a limited edition, mini-nuke casing. And by all games, we mean their adjoining DLC as well – you can look forward to Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition and even Fallout Tactics. That’s a whole lot of Fallout, especially when you consider that Bethesda also launched Fallout Shelter for mobile devices recently.

The anthology will release on September 29th in North America and October 2nd in Europe for PC, allowing for more than a month to get through all the games before Fallout 4’s release. Because surely that will be enough.

Fallout 4 is out on November 10th for Xbox One, PC and PS4. What are your thoughts on this massive anthology though? Let us know in the comments below.
