It was announced at this year’s E3 that Double Fine Productions, known for their varied titles and colorful themes, were joining the Xbox Game Studios. Because of that, it’s very likely that Rad will be the company’s final multiplatform title (or, at the very least, the final title that will see release on PlayStation consoles). Appropriately, the game is all about looking to the future without getting too bogged down in the past.

In a hands-on preview with Game Director Lee Petty from VG24/7, the Director broke down how one of the central ideas behind the game is youth rebuilding the world after society collapsed. While the game draws heavily on ’80s nostalgia, it doesn’t deify it, and the game’s elder narrative finds bewilderment in the protagonist’s lack of respect for the previous society. “Ultimately the youth of Rad are not here to restore the societies of the past,” Petty says, “but to forge something new for themselves.”

Rad is a rougelike title that uses an interesting mutation gimmick that you read all about through here. It should make the game quite the ride when it releases sometime this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

The action roguelike is developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Bandai Namco.

Showcased at the Nindies presentation in March, Double Fine Productions’ action roguelike RAD will be releasing on August 20th. It will be out on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on that date. Bandai Namco Entertainment is in charge of publishing.

Set in a post-post-apocalyptic world, RAD sees players heading into the wasteland to deal with all manner of mutated creatures. The player is tasked with saving the world and will have their trusty bat to help. Of course, you also gain different mutations for new abilities, becoming more than human in the process.

Project lead Lee Petty talked in a press release about development and how feedback has shaped the game since its closed beta. “We’re almost at the home stretch and I couldn’t be more excited for everyone to jump into what we’ve built with RAD,” he said. “One of the best parts of developing RAD has been getting early feedback from the community with the Closed Beta. I want our fans and future players to know that they’re being heard and we’re going to bring an experience they’ll want to keep going back to.”

Much like other roguelike games, RAD’s world is procedurally generated, thus allowing repeated playthroughs. Daily challenges will allow players to compete on the leaderboards using a set load-out of abilities, and there will also be new bats to unlock for future runs. Stay tuned for more details on the game in the coming months.

The game has an interesting gameplay mechanic in mutations.

Double Fine Productions’ RAD was officially revealed in the Nintendo Direct of March 20. Since then it’s been demoed at PAX East, to help fans get a better idea of what the game will be like. It shares a similar art style to many of Double Fine’s previous works, like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that features procedurally generated levels.

That said, one of the unique things to RAD is that your character has a mutation feature, but much like the levels, they are random as you fill a mutation bar fighting enemies, as Twinfinite pointed out in an impressions article. Some of them include turning your head into a cobra to quickly attack enemies, and one that allows you to lay eggs endlessly that mimic your character to attack enemies relentlessly as long as your bar is full.

How many of the mutations there will be hasn’t been detailed, but Double Fine hopes that the unique gameplay feature will blend together with the procedurally generated nature of the game to create a roguelike experience unique to each player.

RAD will release in the Summer for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
