"Never in a million years I would dare to say what the "appropriate" review score for our game should be."

The Order: 1886 has been subject to much criticism regarding its gameplay length and replay value. The criticism is somewhat justified but we still think there is a solid shooter to be found in the game, specially for folks who are interested in cinematic games.

A few days ago, EuroGamer Italy published an interview with Ready At Dawn Studios’ founder and CTO Andrea Pessino. Unfortunately, Andrea’s statements about the game’s review score was misquoted by a few sites/forums. This resulted into players accusing Andrea of a statement that he actually never made. In order to further clarify the issues, Andrea took to his Twitter feed to state that he would never do such a thing.

“Never in a million years I would dare to say what the “appropriate” review score for our game should be,” he tweeted. It’s rather unfortunate that developers have to clarify something that they actually never stated in the first placed. Regardless, Andrea did the right thing by putting an end to this so called confusion.

If you have played through the game, you must have observed that Galahad does not cast a reflection on windows. This was something that was also pointed out by our tech analyst Bill Smith in his tech article for The Order: 1886. Andrea has clarified that this was a technical limitation. Given the game’s graphical prowess, I wonder why Ready At Dawn missed on such a minor detail.

Industry insider talks about the development behind Ready At Dawn's PS4 exclusive and how a sequel may not take a long time to happen.

Ready At Dawn Studios’ The Order: 1886 has received a less than stellar critical reception on release, though it seems to be doing well sales-wise. However, amidst all the criticism is the ending which teases a sequel. According to trusted industry insider “shinobi602”, a sequel is possibly on the cards and will focus more on the gameplay systems established.

Speaking on NeoGAF, he talked about Ready At Dawn’s studio status and how development proceeded on The Order: 1886. “They’re about 120-130 employees there. Not exactly small, but not huge either. From the conversations I’ve had, they spent a huge amount of time perfecting the engine for this initial instalment. Time constraints came into play, goals slashed, but that’s not really uncommon in development.

“However, what has me most excited is that the main focus in a possible sequel are the gameplay systems. That’s what was stated to me. The engine is in place and they’re free to put all their efforts into gameplay design. And they want to do this, it isn’t a result of any backlash over The Order’s design, they as a team want that. By no means do they think the game’s perfect as it is.”

Of course, he later clarified that this does not mean that Sony has greenlit the sequel yet, although Ready At Dawn does want to do one according to shinobi602’s comments above. But whenever it happens the wait won’t be too long. “I wasn’t saying that a sequel’s already greenlit, but I can tell you it certainly won’t take 3 years.”

You should take this all with a grain of salt as usual but it’s intriguing to think about what the original vision for The Order: 1886 may have been. What are your thoughts on the matter? Let us know in the comments.

A particular visual masterpiece but a masterpiece all the same.

The Order: 1886 is an amazing looking game but you probably already knew that. Think back to E3 2013 and how Ready At Dawn’s action adventure stood out among the crowd. That it could make an even bigger impact over the next few months was to be expected but over time, the game’s cinematic emphasis and its desire to blur lines between film and video games became more apparent. There were very strong reasons to having it run at 30 frames per second and employing a 1920×800 resolution, plopping black bars on the top and bottom of one’s screen.

Those aesthetic reasons are purely a matter of preference. Suffice to say, some of us found them distracting and not necessarily imbuing a greater degree of cinematography or film to the proceedings. The Order: 1886 is still currently one of the best looking games on consoles and makes a strong case for the future potential of the PS4.

What makes it stand out among the crowd? Interestingly, it extensively uses global illumination and physically based rendering to provide more volume to the environments and objects. This means that each object interacts with the lighting in natural ways and thus has its own unique property. You’ll primarily notice this in cut-scenes and it helps flesh out the world and characters of The Order: 1886 to a degree unseen in video games.

Global Illumination is used in abundance in The Order: 1886. The draw distance are detailed as well.

It should be noted that all of these technologies come at a heavy resource price. Combine that with the dynamic lighting, which has been rasterized twice for depth pre-pass, and a custom ambient occlusion solution which rivals HBAO, delivering soft shadows without any dithering, and it’s easy to see why the developer opted for some of the settings that it did. However Galahad does not cast any reflections which is weird since it’s a minor detail that should have been present.

That being said, despite running at 30 FPS, there’s nary a drop in frame rate throughout the game. Whether you’re engaged in intense gun-battles or examining objects, The Order: 1886 stays solid throughout. After many recent titles like Dying Light and Evolve skipped anisotropic filtering on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One, it’s a refreshing change to see The Order: 1886 using it. It’s not the best, which manifests in less detail for some objects throughout the game, but it’s better than nothing. The other noteworthy technology governing the game is multisample anti-aliasing with MSAA 4x.

The Order: 1886 easily boasts one of the best, if not the best, anti-aliasing solution on consoles especially compared to most titles which either utilize FXAA or a custom SMAA solution. Some of those have rather clunky implementations – the SMAA in Dying Light being a good example – but you’ll encounter no such issues with The Order: 1886. There are virtually no jaggies to be seen throughout the game.

After the initial reveal and several months before the game’s release, many were concerned about the overall look of the game. Some believed it had been downgraded, as so often has happened with many big budget games in the past year. This hasn’t really been the case with The Order: 1886 – if you check out the comparison below, which compares the final build to the older builds, it will appear to have slight modifications to the lighting as well as how physically based rendering has been implemented. Again, it’s completely subjective to the viewer but the newest build comes off as cleaner and more refined overall while maintaining a strong visual finesse.

On examining other visual flourishes, we noticed that Ready At Dawn Studios used an ample amount of screen space reflections. It’s amazing in some instances, especially when glass in the distance is capable of reflecting images in the foreground. Then there’s the cloth and material quality, with physically based rendering allowing light to naturally react to objects. Cloth movement is realistic and at times very stylish, especially as characters rush into gun fights, and the composition of cloth with various other objects of differing parameters helps to create a subtly intricate but still fascinating visual experience.

Overview of the graphics technology utilized in The Order: 1886. Please click 1080p for best visual quality.

Of course, The Order: 1886 isn’t perfect. We’ve already talked about the black bars and average AF quality but there’s another area where the game could have improved – hair. If you liked the technology used in Tomb Raider (TressFX, which saw implementation in the Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions of the game) or even Assassin’s Creed: Unity, this will feel like a step-down. Some animations also come across as stiff at times, especially in cut-scenes when characters are reacting or moving about. The animations aren’t inherently bad or clunky but they do take you out of the moment at times.

Other effects in the game like blur, bloom, cinematic depth of field, glare, lens effects and more have been used well. You’ll notice different lens effects based on different curvature and vignetting, adding further to the visual richness of the game. The way light interacts with different objects in the game is a separate study on its own. Sometimes it will bounce off of wallpaper and cast iron stone, among other objects.

Head to head comparison shots from the retail and older builds of the game. A custom AO solution and changes to Physical Based Rendering in the final build has made the game look even better.

Final Verdict:

If we’ve said it once, we’ll say it again – Ready At Dawn Studios’ The Order: 1886 is an amazing looking game. It’s perhaps the best looking console game available now and for sure one of the best looking games of all time. The Order: 1886 stands as more than just a technological showcase – it wants to deliver on its aesthetic ideals and employs the technology necessary to achieve this feat. Sure there will be complaints about the game’s basic colour scheme and its presentation, how the depth of field works in certain battle situations and whatnot. The black bars on-screen may not catch the fancy of many players and takes a while to get used to. Additionally, many have complaints as to the overall gameplay, length and mechanics employed in The Order: 1886.

Whether the overt focus on graphics is responsible for other problems or not is another issue entirely. Ready At Dawn Studios crafted a visual experience such as this within 14 months of the PlayStation 4’s launch. The scary part is that the console seems to be capable of even more, a fact corroborated by the development team. What will games look like 5 years down the line on the PS4 if The Order: 1886 looks this good today?

It’s been said that The Order: 1886 is to the PS4 what Ryse: Son of Rome was to the Xbox One. Though this is a mockery in more ways than one, it interestingly applies in terms of the visuals, as Crytek was aiming for a cinematic experience with various custom solutions to deliver a spectacular visual package, despite the restrictions of a 900p resolution at the time. Hopefully, when the dust finally settles, players can also remember The Order: 1886 for what it achieved with its visuals.

Several users have found a few glitches in Ready At Dawn's PS4 exclusive.

Ready At Dawn Studios’ The Order: 1886 is now available worldwide for PlayStation 4. It hasn’t exactly been receiving the best critical reception due to its short length and overall limited gameplay mechanics but for the most part, it seemingly lacks any major bugs.

Or so we thought until recently. One Youtube user discovered a very odd bug where smoke in the distance appears to be popping. This is a graphical glitch and one that could, in theory, be rectified via a patch. However, a more severe glitch has been discovered by a number of users which sees your character falling through the map and seemingly landing in a dark, textureless abyss. You can fall further through the map at this point and though it’s unclear what causes it, it’s certainly not a one-off case.

You can check both the glitches in action below. No game is perfect obviously so the odd glitch or so was to be expected. At least it’s nothing on the level of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. What are your thoughts on The Order: 1886 thus far? Let us know in the comments.

If you are a fan of cinematic games, The Order: 1886 won't let you down.

Ever since Sony showcased The Order: 1886 back during E3 2013, the game has been facing criticism of varying types and the road to launch for Ready At Dawn’s first major console game hasn’t been exactly smooth. But now that we finally have the retail build in our hands, it’s safe to say that game is somewhat of a mix bag.

Over the last few weeks, there has been much speculation regarding The Order: 1886’s gameplay length so I will like to quickly get that out of the way. On normal mode, the game lasts for around eight hours which in my opinion is a bit short given that The Order: 1886 is a single player only game. If you are hardcore third person shooter fan and want to play the game at a higher difficulty, then you can easily push out another three to four hours of gameplay.

Despite the somewhat short length, the game truly shines in its visual aesthetics. The Order: 1886 truly feels like a summer Hollywood blockbuster movie with jaw dropping visuals and magnificent voice acting. The production values are out of the roof and it’s by far one of the best looking games on the PlayStation 4. There is no doubt that this is an artistic masterpiece and if this is any indication of how next-gen visuals are going to look like in the future, then color me excited and intrigued. Although GamingBolt will cover some of the finer details of the technology behind the game in a separate article, Ready at Dawn have by large set a graphical benchmark that only a few development studios will by pass in 2015.

There’s great character drama around the protagonist Galahad and his band of merry men along with the alternate Victorian setting which makes the game’s plot rather fascinating. Although I won’t spoil much about the game’s story, I can say that the developers have weaved an intriguing historical fiction, something that players would love to spend a lot of time in, at least for a good chunk of the game.

However, the game ends rather abruptly which took me back by surprise and disappointment. I understand that Ready At Dawn probably wants to make a sequel depending on the success of the game, but there is no denying I was left wanting for more in the end. Given that the core of the game is deeply interwoven with the story, the ending is disappointing but the alternate history setting and the initial plotlines are enough to make The Order: 1886 an interesting proposition storywise.

"Initial gunfights might appeal to some players but as the game goes on you will be eventually doing the same thing over and over again. A group of enemies come in, Galahad takes cover, pops out, takes aim and shoots. Rinse and repeat."

Given the game’s focus on delivering high quality cinematic experience, the gameplay turns out to be only a mere part of the entire package. Initial gunfights might appeal to some players but as the game goes on you will be eventually doing the same thing over and over again. A group of enemies come in, Galahad takes cover, pops out, takes aim and shoots. Rinse and repeat. There is no improvisation involved at all.

This game had all the potential to play somewhat like the Ghost Recon series wherein the player gives commands to their AI counterparts, however The Order has no such system and there are no strategies or tactics involved while taking on your enemies.

Galahad’s arsenal of weapons is rather impressive and once again the attention to detail is astonishing. Guns look and feel futuristic. You have access to your standard grenades along with several weaponry such as Combo and Thermite which packs a punch. You will find more weapons such as the Sniper Rifle as you play through the game but again, the lack of customization is baffling. At least a simple system like changing Galahad’s loadout before heading into a mission would have sufficed. Unfortunately that is the not the case here.

"Its design choices seem to prioritize cinematics over gameplay and this is where the problem lies."

Then there are quick time events. I don’t necessarily hate QTEs and I found them to add a new layer to gameplay mechanics if they are used in the right quantity and at the appropriate time. Unfortunately, there is overload of QTE in the game. I understand the use of QTE during a boss battle but using it for as bland activities such as drinking The Order’s secret serum seems a bit forced.

The over use of quick time events is most likely a design choice in The Order: 1886 so that it can maintain its cinematic look and feel but I have my doubts on whether it’s the right approach. Consider the case of Metal Gear Solid, a game that heavily focuses on cinematics but I haven’t seen one game in the entire series that have used as many quick time events as The Order did. Again, I understand the need for QTEs but The Order: 1886 does it so often that it eventually leads to its own downfall.

Another complaint, albeit a minor one is the continuous popping up of tutorials. For example, the camera moves with the right analog stick and the game makes sure you know about it. Okay I get it…but there is no need to show me that again and again. This complain won’t take anything away from the game’s experience but it is annoying nonetheless.

In a generation where open world games are becoming a norm, I found The Order: 1886 a respectable throwback to the good old days of linear corridor based third person shooter. It’s a hardcore single player experience only and there is no reason to replay The Order: 1886 again unless and until you are trophy hunting or finding each and every collectible.

Its design choices seem to prioritize cinematics over gameplay and this is where the problem lies. This is not to say The Order: 1886 is a bad game, but it could have been better if it would have tried to balance those two mechanics. Having said that, The Order: 1886 does remains true to its vision of cinematic storytelling through awesome production values and this is where I think a few players might find the game’s appeal in.

Download the game and play it as soon as it releases worldwide tomorrow.

PS4 owners who purchased The Order: 1886 on PlayStation Network can now begin pre-loading the game prior to its global launch tomorrow. You’ll have to download 6.44 GB initially of the game’s total 31 GB file size but the rest of it will download in the background afterwards.

It should also be noted that The Order: 1886 has a day one patch that weighs in at a surprising 30 MB. Say what you will about the game’s perceived short length but if Ready At Dawn has optimized it to the point of requiring such a small patch, that in itself is noteworthy. Then again, it doesn’t exactly have multiplayer or open world aspects that need to be further refined.

The Order: 1886 releases on February 20th and is exclusive to PlayStation 4. It takes place in an alternate history London occupied by lichen-like Half Breeds and descendants of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round using steampunk technology to eliminate them.

Dana Jan is excited for feedback from those who've played it though.

Ready At Dawn Studios’ The Order: 1886 isn’t even out yet and it’s garnering some mixed reactions. This is due to a recent YouTuber posting an entire walkthrough of the game which clocked in at roughly 6 hours (despite clearly rushing through it). Though analyst Michael Pachter believes it will be a success for the year, The Order: 1886 has still seemingly attracted a lot “haterade” according to director Dana Jan.

Speaking to Develop, Jan stated that, “We have this uncanny ‘haterade’ for our game no matter what. People are looking for something to throw at our game, some reason to hate it. I’m excited to hear what people who have actually played the game think about it, how do they feel about the quality and the quantity? I think by and large that most people are going to be satisfied.

Every high profile title, especially exclusives, are subject to scrutiny but Jan believes it’s even more audacious in this case. “It’s more just shocking that for a game that isn’t out yet, for a franchise that is brand new, the amount of negativity is just…

“I just feel like these days it’s so easy to be negative and I think the internet is the new playground for bullies. Who goes out of their way to really go and say something positive, right?

“If you go out to a restaurant and you have a good time, do you go online immediately to post something? But if you have a bad experience, you’ll jump on because you want to warn people about it right? It takes a lot more effort to say something nice than to say something negative, and I think people are excited to jump on some bandwagon of negativity.

“I don’t think people need to go out there and be unbiased supporters of our stuff or anything either. I want them to make up their own minds about the game period. It just seems like the pendulum swings the other way so frequently. I mean, we’ll see, right?”

The Order: 1886 is out on February 20th for PlayStation 4 so we’ll indeed find out for ourselves just how good or bad it is. Stay tuned in the coming days.

Michael Pachter believes The Order: 1886 will really do sales wise.

I think it’s safe to say that the road to launch for The Order: 1886 hasn’t been exactly smooth. The game is already facing severe criticism regarding its gameplay length. Regardless of all the controversies, Research Analyst at Wedbush Securities, Michael Pachter believes that the game will sell in millions just due to the fact that Sony’s PlayStation 4 is doing well which will automatically result into higher attach-rate for Ready At Dawn’s console exclusive.

“It’s a really good exclusive title and I think it attaches at a pretty high rate to the install base so probably 3.5 to 4 million of the install base, and then I think it will probably attract another 1 to 2 million to buy a PlayStation 4 in the next few months. So I would imagine it would be 5 million through the year’s end and it’s great,” Pachter said in an interview with GamingBolt.

Pachter is confident that Sony will keep on selling PS4s and if they bundle it up with the console, The Order: 1886 may even sell close to 10-12 million copies. “[Sony] They are going to keep selling PS4s so the trick is that this title is coming out early in the year but it’s going to sell really well in the Fall and it will probably be $40 during Holidays and if they bundle it with the PlayStation 4 which is how they will; I think the February launch is planned in such way that come Black Friday and they could give you The Order for free if you buy the PS4. So could end up selling 10-12 million because they can give away that many copies. But it’s going to do well.”

He further states that the game will receive a positive critical reception and praised Sony for consistently delivering deep storylines in their exclusives. “I think it’s going to receive good reviews. I think it’s a very interesting game and I like the alternate reality and retro setting. I was a bit skeptic on Red Dead Redemption because it had this western theme and until Red Dead, westerns themes hadn’t worked but it had a great story and it did really well. The Order is not quite a western but a Victorian but it’s the same idea with old weapons but the alternate reality makes it cool. The game has a great story and they have this order that projects societies and it could do super well. I think Sony has consistently come up with really interesting storylines in their exclusives.”

Stay tuned for our full interview with Pachter in the coming days. The Order: 1886 comes out this week exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
