The director credit was revealed through a new episode of PLAY!PLAY!PLAY! that gave us a look at the early parts of Pragmata.

As we get closer to the April 17th release date for Pragmata, Capcom has revealed through a new episode of its Japanese PLAY!PLAY!PLAY! YouTube series that Yasuhiro Anpo is serving as the game’s general director. His presence on the project should give fans of Capcom’s recent titles more of a reason to be excited, since Anpo has also worked as co-director on 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake and 2023’s Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The credits are visible in the video as part of the title’s opening cutscene. The video features Pragmata director Yonghee Cho, producer Naoto Oyama, alongside the show’s host, Hatsune Matsushima. Volume 1 of the show, which you can check out below, involves the earlier parts of the game, with Matsushima being introduced to Pragmata and its characters by Oyama and Cho. The second volume, slated to be released later this week, will take place “a little further into the game,” and will pit Matsushima against some of Pragmata‘s boss fights.

As for Anpo, he has been working with Capcom since 1996, and even served as a software engineer on the first two Resident Evil games. He would eventually take on more responsibilities, like being production director on 2009’s Resident Evil 5, before taking on the role of co-director on the two remakes. Along with Resident Evil, Anpo has also worked on other franchises, including 2006’s Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and 2001’s Onimusha: Warlords.

Pragmata is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Just last month, Capcom confirmed that there would be no delays for the game since it had gone gold. In its announcement, the company thanked “all the fans who supported us so far.”

Cho and Oyama had previously spoken about the challenges of making the New York environment in Pragmata look like it was AI-generated, despite having been made by human artists. In an interview, Cho spoke about trying to nail minor details to make sure things wouldn’t get too distracting for players.

“For Pragmata, we set the premise as ‘a fake New York generated by AI,’” said Cho. “When familiar locations appear, players can relate more easily. On top of that, to make it clear that this isn’t the real New York, we wanted something slightly distorted.”

“It mirrors reality, but its unique appeal comes from the setting errors and how they feel out of place, such as taxis sinking into floors, or buses sprouting from walls. Although the premise is that it generated by AI, actually, our human developers painstakingly worked to incorporate mechanisms that express this AI-like uncanny feel,” explained Oyama.

If Pragmata looks like the kind of game you would enjoy, you can check out its free demo, available on all platforms. The demo proved to be quite popular, with Capcom celebrating the fact that it had been downloaded 2 million times since its release. In the meantime, take a look at our thoughts about why Pragmata may end up being in a league of its own.

Nate Purkeypile spoke about how Bethesda's games tend to have too many underlying systems that interact with each other to be remade.

While many remakes and remasters have been released over the years, many agree that Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes have established high bars for any other studio to clear. Former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile agrees with this, and goes on to note that a remake of such scale for one of Bethesda’s RPGs wouldn’t be feasible.

This is largely due to how Resident Evil games tend to offer more linear and focused experiences, while Bethesda’s titles tend to be more open games with many systems working on top of each other.

“I really, really like the Resident Evil remakes and those are super cool where it was like, totally remade, but I don’t think that’s really viable for a Bethesda game to do that,” he said in an interview with KiwiTalkz. “With that many systems interacting, to try and get that to actually behave in the same way. Ugh, I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.”

Purkeypile also spoke about The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, and how it was achieved by the developers making use of Unreal Engine 5 on top of the RPG’s own engine, both working in tandem. He also acknowledged that a “from scratch” remake for an RPG of such scale would be too expensive to consider.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was released last year, and quickly became quite the hit, reaching 9 million players just a few months after its release. The title was developed by Bethesda working together with Virtuos, and was built by making use of Unreal Engine 5 to handle the visual side of things while the original Gamebryo Engine powering Oblivion took care of the gameplay logic. For more details, take a look at our review. While it is currently available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a Nintendo Switch 2 port is also in the works. However, Bethesda hasn’t yet confirmed a solid release date aside from a general 2026 window.

In the same discussion, fellow former Bethesda developers Jonah Lobe and Bruce Nesmith discussed how they wouldn’t be too surprised if the company were to give the responsibility of developing Fallout 5 to another studio. While typically unlikely, Lobe brought up the fact that the company likely has its hands full for now with the development of The Elder Scrolls 6.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Bethesda gave Fallout 5 to a different production studio,” said Lobe. “I think that they’re doing more and more of that already, they’re bigger and bigger than ever. I feel like The Elder Scrolls 6, the expectations are already beyond the screen here, and they already have their hands full with that.”

Nesmith noted that it would also be advantageous for Bethesda to release a new entry in the Fallout franchise while Amazon’s live action adaptation is still running. “I wasn’t necessarily with you before, but when you say that, I totally agree,” he said. “Having the game come out while the show is either still running, or still very fresh, would be a huge advantage.”

It's time to experience Leon's harrowing first day on the job, Claire in tow, in a new way with some very attractive gimmicks in play.

Resident Evil 2 Remake’s success might have earned it a new lease of life as Bandai Namco Experience is gearing up to bring an arcade version of the game to select locations in Japan and Europe later this year.

As a remake of what is probably the worst first day at work in gaming history, Leon and Claire were brought to life quite well on modern hardware in this one, and it’s an adventure worth playing if you’ve hopped on with Requiem and want to see how the hatchet-wielding hunk got his start in the franchise. There’s a lot to like about the remake and getting to experience it in an entirely new way is definitely music to the ears of any Resident Evil fan.

The arcade version will have some fancy haptics on its guns, a floor that shakes things up, and even a machine that sprays the room with mist at all the right moments. There are also changes to a few cutscenes and enemy types to keep you on your toes if you’ve blazed a path through the game before. If you’re new to the franchise, we recommend taking some moral support along when it’s out.

It will begin with a test run at select locations before a bigger rollout across available regions, so keep your eyes peeled. Or you could wait for us to tell you about it. Until then, the trailer below is all we have for now. Alternatively, you can play the original, which is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Although Resident Evil Requiem is clearly inspired by one of the most iconic titles in the franchise's history, it does do enough to differentiate itself from Resident Evil 2. And that might just be its biggest strength.

February 2026 isn’t going by fast enough for our liking, and Resident Evil Requiem is to blame. With a little over two weeks left before we finally get to join Grace and Leon on an investigation into the Racoon City Incident, many years after it devastated so many lives, it’s kind of hard not to let our minds wander in the general direction of what it’s going to bring to the table.

That’s why we’ve been poring over the game’s promotional materials, and in doing so, came to a realization. While the developer has been quite emphatic about Requiem taking inspiration from Resident Evil 2, we began to think about ways in which it departs from the gameplay loop that introduced Leon to the franchise.

Those deviations are quite interesting, and we felt compelled to elaborate on them, just as much as we’re celebrating the similarities between the two games. Let’s get started.

5 Things Requiem Borrows From RE2 Remake

1. Back To The Beginning

All of the promotional materials made available for the game are betting big on Grace and Leon uncovering more about the Racoon City Incident, which formed the stage for RE2’s narrative centered around the latter. It’s going to be interesting to watch the former RCPD rookie take a look back at a time that shaped the course of his life.

It’s great that Requiem is choosing to go back to the franchise’s most iconic location, making the RE2-coded nostalgia an important part of its identity on the narrative front, while the gameplay is also slated to reflect the best of the game that came before it.

2. A Return To Survival Horror (Sort Of)

Grace’s screen time has largely been advertised as a return to the cautious, resource-limited, tension-filled gameplay loop that RE2 thrived on. As a rookie with no field experience in dealing with bio-organic weapons, Grace must rely on stealth and her own wits to survive. That’s a lane that RE2 absolutely owned back in the day, and in its very successful remake.

It’s also an interesting callback to Leon’s own origin story within the franchise, as he was sort of like her when he first confronted the threats that Umbrella’s machinations had unleashed upon his city. As far as first gigs in the field go, Grace and Leon definitely got the short straw.

3. A Stalker On The Hunt

We still get the shudders when we think of how relentlessly Mr. X hunted us in RE2, and we’re kind of morbidly thrilled to have a new Stalker trying to bring Grace’s investigation to an abrupt, and rather grisly, end. As a roaming threat that could surface at any given moment, Mr. X was an excellent way to build pressure as you explored RE2’s levels, forcing you to think long and hard about routing through spaces.

Requiem brings a Stalker back, and has made it even more terrifying than Mr. X (in terms of how you hide from or mislead it), something we will talk about in the next section. It’s a similarity that brings the two games closer; the intervening years only serving to provide the developers with the scope to up their game.

4. Looking Over Our Shoulders

Although you can choose to experience Requiem entirely in first person, the option to switch things up and see things from a third-person perspective is a very welcome addition. But the way in which the third-person camera has been implemented showcases RE2’s focus on bringing the camera close to you, forcing you to be careful in tight spaces while being deliberate with your aiming if you choose to let a few bullets fly at your enemies.

It’s suffocating and claustrophobic, nailing down the vibe that RE2 has been praised for over the years. It helps that Grace’s clumsiness shines through when you choose to see things from that camera angle, making the entire ordeal feel all the more immersive as a result.

5. Puzzles In Scary Places

The Resident Evil franchise has always placed puzzles in our way, and RE2 is quite memorable on that front, thanks to how solving those puzzles usually meant navigating contained spaces that were packed with hostile presences just waiting to tear us apart. It was part of that game’s charm, and Grace’s sections see them making a triumphant return.

From what we can see of the game so far, the puzzles bring the same intense energy that was a part of RE2’s design philosophy, and we suspect that Requiem might even surpass the game that inspired its horror sections if it does justice to its mechanics.

5 Things Requiem Is Doing Differently From RE2 Remake

1. A Two-In-One Approach

Requiem might have two protagonists leading its narrative, but it’s structured differently from RE2, which has Leon and Claire’s storylines running in parallel to each other. However, it was essentially the same gameplay loop with minor variations to set the two characters apart.

Requiem, however, has been touted as a title in which Grace and Leon bring distinctly different gameplay loops to the table, with Grace being nudged towards the horror side of things while Leon is an absolute wrecking machine let loose on the zombies in an action-focused approach that’s more in line with Resident Evil 5. It’s a solid distinction that works well to make the new title feel like two different games rolled into one intersecting storyline.

2. A More Seasoned Version Of Leon

Leon’s quite the deadly force in Requiem, bringing him closer to his appearance in RE4 Remake, another title that has inspired the gameplay in the franchise’s latest outing. The developers have been quite proud to showcase their new combat abilities, their action-forward toolkit, and rhythm being a major talking point (a very cool ride notwithstanding).

It’s another way Requiem sets itself apart from RE2, where Leon didn’t have years of working with the DSO under his belt, and was way more vulnerable as a result. That’s made even more interesting by the fact that he has secrets of his own this time around, and his search for answers could shed even more insight into his battle-hardened personality. For our part, we don’t think there’s any amount of training or experience that could let us stare a zombie in the face without even blinking, but Leon’s certainly made of sterner stuff.

3. Switch Perspectives On The Fly

RE2 Remake came with fixed perspectives, while Requiem lets you switch your POV as you please, a factor that automatically sets it apart from its predecessors. While the fixed camera did work well in RE2 and the remake, the option to switch things up would have been nice, and the fact that Requiem is addressing the issue showcases how the franchise is constantly evolving over the years.

It’s a solid addition that we believe could elevate how the horror reads from moment to moment, while helping with spatial awareness when it’s needed. It’s evident from how Grace’s sections have been showcased from a first-person perspective, while Leon’s combat scenes are seen from the third-person POV, which allows players to manage the space around them and be aware of attacks from any direction.

4. A Smarter Stalker

Yes, Mr. X was terrifying, his ominous frame and general aura being among the most memorable parts of RE2. But as a humanoid, he was limited in the options he had to come at you and would hunt you on foot for the most part. The game’s systems didn’t create the scope for a more dynamic hunter with several different moves, something that Requiem seems to have taken to heart and worked to improve upon.

The Stalker in Requiem isn’t held back by such constraints, using the vents, grates, and pipes to keep Grace on her toes as she tries to evade an enemy she’s ill-equipped to handle. That’s more in alignment with titles like Alien: Isolation or Amnesia: The Bunker as opposed to RE2’s comparatively more heads-on approach.

5. Protagonist Framing Is Very Different

Since Requiem takes place years after the Racoon City Incident, it’s automatically different from RE2, which placed Leon and Claire in a survival story with rookie cop vibes. That made sense for the story it was trying to tell and the experience it was going for, its horror stemming from the fact that its protagonists were trying to survive a zombie outbreak with little to no answers and even fewer options for safety.

Requiem, however, comes at its horror from a different angle, its story framed around investigating the aforementioned outbreak through the eyes of Grace and Leon. While Grace does bring a smidge of a rookie cop to her tale, Leon’s now more of a legacy agent who’s seen his fair share of BOWs and lived to tell the tale. That differentiates it from RE2 by a long shot in our book.

Bonus: The Inventory System

RE2 Remake starts you at 8 inventory slots, and even with Hip Pouches taking you up to 20, you’re still leaning on the item box to stay efficient. Requiem mirrors that survival squeeze with Grace, an 8-slot setup that pushes frequent storage-box returns and packs to expand capacity. Leon, though, plays by different rules with a 7×10 attaché-style case (rotate/auto-sort), turning inventory into a layout puzzle instead of pure scarcity.

And that’s a wrap on how similar yet different Requiem is from one of the titles that has inspired its new and improved approach to the franchise’s formula. We’re quite certain that we’re all going to see our fair share of nostalgic callbacks once the game is finally in our hands, though.

Until then, we’re right with you in wishing that the days could go by faster!

A light in the black, or just fear of the dark? Requiem looks set to blend Village’s dread with RE2’s tight survival as one.

In Resident Evil Requiem, you’re either confident in the light or fumbling desperately through the dark, such is the fragile capability of FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft. The series’ newest heroine is tough to work out; as Requiem’s Gamescom demo begins, she’s suspended upside down, bleeding, and hysterical. Yet, she somehow gains composure, pulling intravenous needles from her veins to escape into the narrow confines of the Rhodes Hill facility. But then, later, as she tiptoes through dimly-lit corridors, she’s spooked by her own shadow.

Usually, Grace serves the bureau from behind a desk. Now she’s in the field, investigating a string of strange deaths on the outskirts of a ruinous Raccoon City some thirty years after the original outbreak. Her duality – both in faculty and ineptitude – isn’t just for thematic character building, but plays out in Requiem’s camera perspectives too. Now, in a series first, you can choose to experience the nightmare through first-person’s psychological compression or pull back into the spatial awareness of third-person. Both are freely switchable, and both feel distinct. Your camera choice will be tactical as well as personal.

Look – if we’re talking duplexity, it’s worth mentioning that Resident Evil, as a series, has followed two distinct throughlines in recent years: the “new”, first-person revivals’ Resident Evil 7 and Village, and the “remakes” beginning with Resident Evil 2 in 2019, through 3. Resident Evil 2 Remake modernize the classic template without leaning on the old fixed-camera, slow-burn presentation. They embrace a more cinematic, over-the-shoulder viewpoint and punchier moment-to-moment pacing, while still staying rooted in the earlier survival-horror fundamentals. In doing so, they form a clear remake “lane” of their own, distinct from the newer entries and their more experimental reinventions.

Resident Evil Requiem is where evolutionary strands converge, paying homage to the series’ legacy while harnessing the immediacy of its modern era. Through its switchable perspectives, and Grace’s own dichotomy, you’re invited to meet Requiem’s terrors at your chosen distance.

And that’s the thing about Requiem’s horror: it isn’t telling you explicitly that the dark is something to fear. It’s questioning your mindset when confronted with it. Its first-person perspective condenses the feeling to suffocation, while third-person recoils slightly from the black, giving the briefest space to breathe. Either way, Grace keeps stepping forward, magnetically drawn; a light in the black, trembling. The only way out for her is further in.

As the short demo continues, it becomes clear that Grace isn’t getting her hands on a firearm yet; the only weapon she wields is light – lamps, switches, and a discarded cigarette lighter (the reason light becomes her arsenal we’ll come back to later). Here, inside the facility is tightly-wound exploration, key puzzles, and scavenger hunts – hallmarks of Resident Evil design – but there’s inspiration from RE Village’s atmospheric milieu and RE2R’s prowling threat too.

Resident Evil Requiem wears its Village inspiration most clearly in how its world feels. The Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center is more than just a functional space; its gloom bears the same weathered density that defined Village. Ornate, Victorian decor; slightly Gothic, and partially damp, its flickering offices reveal their moral rot while the ink-black corridors and work-spaces hide pulverised remains. Both the Center in Requiem and Village’s backwater hamlet harbour macabre history, and you feel it through their noxious atmospheres before you understand it.

And, crucially, the dark atmosphere both games share isn’t passive decoration, but a clear sign that their worlds are predatory. Like RE2 Remake’s RCPD, Requiem weaponises the Care Center’s layout, giving form to a towering, shambling pursuer; the latest entry in Resident Evil’s line of perilous stalkers. Like Mr X, Nemesis, or Village’s Lady Dimitrescu, the wall-climbing thing in Requiem announces itself suddenly, and chases you relentlessly through winding interiors. It routinely disrupts Grace’s rummaging, emerging, unsettlingly, from practically anywhere, smashing holes in the ceiling to boot.

Once the monster has announced itself, sound becomes a dictatorial force – its both bait which alerts your assailant and your tool for distraction and defence in the black. Arguably more ingrained into survival than Leon and Claire’s edges through the Raccoon City PD, where Mr X’s stomps and door slams echo across the cavernous station. Here, in tight, airless corridors, Requiem’s hunter scratches through interstitial space and floor cavities, guiding every inch you claim. Of course, some moments are designed to provoke the beast too; as Grace carefully repositions an obstructing trolley, metal detritus inevitably falls; sharp clangs cut through the heavy silence and the monster’s shamblings close in, creating a constant push-pull between quiet exploration and pragmatic scurrying. There’re similarities to Ethan’s skulks through the Baker House in RE7, but more so Requiem is showcasing confidence in stealth mechanics.

And, as is a staple of the stealth genre, you’ll be able to grab the odd glass bottle to use, most often, as a device for distraction – smashing it into the dark to fool the monstrous being of your whereabouts. Inevitably though, the monster will find you. Despite some scripted moments, the developer claims the monster’s behaviour is reactive; that it’s down to you how successful you are in keeping Grace out of its chomping maw. Watching demo playthroughs, it’s unclear to what degree the monster is supposed to find you, and what is because of Grace being a little too heavy-footed, but when the monster does give chase there’re locations of sanctuary to be found – akin to RE’s save rooms but more narratively fleshed out.

We alluded to it earlier – Grace’s weapon inside the Center isn’t firepower, but light. Once she’s scrambled into an illuminated room, the monster gives up. The fluorescence burns its skin, forcing retreat. Mr X’s refusal to enter any room with a typewriter in RE2R, while coming as a relief, always felt a little strange. Resident Evil Requiem circumvents that immersion breaking oddity, giving tangible reason for the monster’s backtracking rather than it being hard-coded to give you a breather.

From official artwork and gameplay snippets, we know Grace gets a gun in her holster at some point. But, during this early section, she’s vulnerable, underprepared, and borderline helpless, save for the odd lightbulb. Unlike any previous RE protagonist, apart from, perhaps, Sherry’s section in RE2 Remake, Grace personifies Requiem’s horror, revisiting the creeping dread of the series’ earliest entries by moving it away from Village’s FPS leanings.

And so, returning to Resident Evil Requiem’s duality, you might be wondering why we haven’t mentioned the game’s other big deviation. Yes, we all know Leon Kennedy is returning as a playable character, and while it’s a shoo-in your moments in his command will feature explosive gunplay, there hasn’t been enough gameplay shared just yet to show how his portions of the campaign will flow. Chainsaws aside, what do you think Leon’s role will be? There’re theories circulating as to why he’s interested in Grace’s investigation, but with the developer remaining tight-lipped we thought we’d steer clear of speculating for now, leaving that up to you – let us know in the comments what you think Leon’s purpose in Resident Evil Requiem will be.

What we are sure of, according to Requiem’s developer, is that, much like the switchable perspectives, the game’s dual-protagonists will control the horror’s momentum. However, while you’re free to choose your preferred camera angle, switching control between Grace and Leon – clinical vulnerability versus blood-splattering power – means your set for an emotionally turbulent experience. Eeking every ounce of silence, then severing limbs with aplomb, and back again.

Requiem isn’t reinventing the series’ formula, but coalescing Resident Evil’s fear to the rhythm of helplessness and response. If the developer can keep this balance steady, then Requiem may emerge as more than just Resident Evil 9, but where the series finally becomes whole. There’s light in the black, but how’s your fear of the dark?

Take a look at 25 of the greatest remakes ever made, each one reviving a classic while modernizing its gameplay for a new era.

Video games face a huge problem of preservation, as products of this medium are quite prone to being dated on account of rapid changes in technology and shifting trends. As such, remakes have been quite prominent as of late, which try to transform classic experiences in a way that’s palatable to modern audiences. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 25 of the best remakes of all time that are absolutely worth your time.

Resident Evil (2002)

The original Resident Evil was a groundbreaking title, mixing together survival and horror in a way that was never seen before. The PlayStation version was a product of its time, and the developer remastered it for the GameCube generation with a significant overhaul to its visuals and several quality-of-life changes. The fixed camera angles meant better pre-baked reflections and textures, making the visuals a step above what was possible with a free camera.

These titles are defined by their unforgettable stories and characters, stellar world-building and design, impeccable gameplay, and more.

With how long and illustrious the history of gaming has been, picking the best games of all time is almost impossible. Nevertheless, it’s worth highlighting the best titles launched across all those generations, what made them special and why you should check them out. Without further ado, here are our picks for the top 30 games of all time, starting with…

30. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

Perfection in a video game doesn’t come easy, but Polyphony Digital has come closer than most with several of its Gran Turismo titles. Despite cutting back on the number of cars, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is arguably the best of the bunch in terms of physics, AI, and sound (and even its visuals still hold up today). That’s before getting into the improvements with car shops, Gran Turismo Mode, and the long-awaited arrival of Formula One cars.

While rumors of Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica circulate, Capcom's other remakes continue selling well years later.

Capcom’s remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 continue to bring in numbers for the company. The former has sold a whopping 15 million copies, up by 500,000 since its last milestone, while the latter is at 9.6 million sales, up by 400,000.

Both sales figures are noteworthy due to the relative age of the titles. Resident Evil 2 remake arrived in January 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, eventually coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. It received overwhelming acclaim from critics and fans, becoming the standard-bearer for remakes.

Resident Evil 3 remake followed in April 2020 and to say it didn’t quite receive as much acclaim would be an understatement. This is due to its comparatively shorter length, story changes and cut content (including Mercenaries). The bundled Resident Evil: Resistance, a horrendous asymmetrical multiplayer component, also didn’t help.

Capcom’s latest remake is for Resident Evil 4, which reached 9.2 million units sold. As for the future, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica are rumored to receive remakes.

Survival horror continues to be one of the most popular genres in gaming, and here are 15 that deserve your time.

The survival horror genre continues to be one of the most loved in the medium of games, and over the years – we have had plenty of great experiences of this ilk that have stayed with us after all this time. To that end, we present 15 of the best survival horror games of all time.

Silent Hill 2

Konami’s Silent Hill 2 continues to be a benchmark for survival horror games even after all these years later, and that legendary status can largely be attributed to the excellent atmosphere that never fails to keep you guessing. The fog-infested town of Silent Hill is brimming with horrors that would give you nightmares for weeks to come, and everything from the story to the music and puzzle design works in symphony to support the central themes of uneasiness and inducing a sense of fear of the unknown.

There have been a ton of massive single player games released over the years. In this feature we list the best ones you need to play.

Games have proven time and time again that they are the ultimate forms of entertainment, thanks to their ability to combine storytelling with interactivity that when done right – can create wondrous experiences that stay with you long after the credits have rolled. Single-player games have been and continue to be a big staple for fans. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 25 of the best single-player games of all time.

Starfield

Starfield is Bethesda’s newest IP in over 25 years, and it’s a testament to the developer’s amazing world-building chops. The NASA-Punk designs on offer look really amazing, but Starfield isn’t just shown without substance. You get to explore a massive space world inhabited by different cultures and factions, and you get to take on a wide variety of well-written quests that twist and turn based on your choices. Add to that some massive improvements in combat, and Starfield becomes a really tantalizing experience.

Dead Space

Dead Space is one of the best survival horror games of all time, and the popularity of the recently released remake is a testament to the timelessness of this classic. The protagonist’s journey through the foggy and claustrophobic compartments of USG Ishimura is brimming with ferocious Necromorphs waiting to maul you at every instance of reckless behavior. Between a brutal gameplay loop and ominous atmosphere, Dead Space is an impressive survival horror game that’s just as fresh as it was more than a decade ago.

Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West is a game that takes what worked in the original, and expands upon those concepts in new and interesting ways. Forbidden West thrusts players into a beautiful open-world brimming with both beauty and suffering, and you must do everything in your power to free the world from the titular Corruption that’s raging in full force. The gameplay also features key improvements like expanded mobility options and better platforming, which makes for a worthy sequel.

Ori And The Will of the Wisps

Moon Studios delivered an excellent platformer with Ori and the Will of the Wisps, a game that does a good job of combining a fantasy style story with a smooth-flowing combat loop. The game takes you through a bunch of wonderfully well-realized locales, and what makes it so special is the excellent understanding of when to dish out new powers and new kinds of obstacles – which makes the progression and gameplay loop surprisingly addictive for a single-player game.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 stands tall as one of the best and most important survival horror games in history, and Resident Evil 2 Remake does an excellent job of taking those ideas and presenting them in a way that today’s audience will definitely appreciate. The myriad of visual improvements and gameplay overhauls really bring out the best in Resident Evil 2, and it’s a constantly thrilling experience with a rich atmosphere and brutal gameplay.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a heart-wrenching tale about the gradual fall of the Van Der Linde gang as law and order start to rapidly penetrate the Wild West. Red Dead Redemption 2 features some of the best writing that we have seen in gaming, and it presents it all with some stunning attention to detail. The world is brimming with different quests to undertake and things to do – and you could spend dozens upon dozens of hours wandering aimlessly and just soaking in the sunsets.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is a wonderfully imaginative game that’s entirely based upon using your magical hat to take control of objects in the world and cross all kinds of obstacles in the many sandbox levels. The mechanics and level designs are top-notch, and Odyssey does a great job of inducing a big grin on your face as you hop and glide through these platforming jungle gyms.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves might just be the best rendition of a non-stop action movie in video game form. Nathan’s journey to finding the coveted Chintamani stone is punctuated with all sorts of whacky set-piece sequences and frenetic gunfights, and the accompanying story also manages to tug at the heart’s strings without compromising on the signature pompous thrill of the series.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a game that was well and truly ahead of its time. The narrative tackled heavy themes such as the effects of information misspread and the power of social media long before any of these things had much value in the world, and it’s all accompanied by a strong foundation of gameplay ideas that beautifully work together with one another. And then, of course, you also have a sizable portion of memorable boss fights that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Set against the monster-infested fantasy world of Continent, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is all about adventuring your way through its many areas in the hopes of finding the whereabouts of Ciri. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a game with a complex web of mechanics and systems that intertwine with each other to create something that’s truly wonderful. Add to that a bevy of diverse and engaging content on offer, and Wild Hunt becomes a truly spectacular experience.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the highest-selling video games of all time, and it’s the most profitable entertainment product in all of history – and those records should alone tell you about the game and its massive popularity. Grand Theft Auto 5 dumps you into a beautiful world inhabited by all sorts of colorful personalities, and tasks you to take on daring heist missions or just carve out your own fun in this wondrous sandbox. It’s a game that puts fun at the epicenter of its designs, which makes the final product so much more addictive than its peers.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas might just be the most influential game of the PS2 generation, and for good reason. Rockstar provided a significant bump in quality over Vice City, incorporating multiple open cities to explore, activities to pursue, and a buffet of mission types to choose from. San Andreas was unlike anything we had ever experienced before, and despite a few obvious cracks – it remains a highly enjoyable game to this date.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto 4 tells the story of Niko exacting a long awaited revenge on an enemy while coming to grips with the frailties of living your dream. It’s a compelling story that expertly juggles some heavy themes with the signature humor of the series, and the bevy of gameplay improvements like combat and mission designs haven’t gone unnoticed by fans. Grand Theft Auto 4 is an underrated classic, and deserves a lot more credit and appreciation than it gets.

Red Dead Redemption 1

Yet another one of Rockstar’s works on this list, Red Dead Redemption puts players in the shoes of former Van Der Linde gang member John Marston as he tries to earn his long-due redemption by working for lawful authorities. The Wild West setting marked a fresh change of pace from the bustling metropolitans that we saw in the Grand Theft Auto games, and it’s all brought to life with plentiful attention to detail in aspects ranging from horse riding to mission designs and so much more.

Far Cry 3

2012’s Far Cry 3 was an incredibly successful venture for the open world genre, and a lot of that could be attributed to the excellent combination of a strong story and an open-ended gameplay loop that’s entirely based on systemic game design. Far Cry 3 takes you from one thrilling mission to the next, and you can spend a ton of time just roaming around the open-world, hunting prey for a fancy piece of equipment or taking on enemy encampments in creative ways.

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 is a massive space opera where you take control of Commander Shepard and his crew as they embark on dangerous missions across the galaxy. Mass Effect 2’s set of missions and the accompanying story is arguably the peak representation of the genre – which makes it worthy of being on this list.

Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 combines an entertaining story with its action-packed cover shooting gameplay – which results in a high-octane experience that’s just hard to put down. Released in 2011, the game was supposed to be an end to the original trilogy – and the developers made sure that it all went down in style. This entry features some of the best firefights in the series, which makes it really hard to put down once you get the hang of it.

Half-Life 2

Much like Alan Wake 2, Half-Life 2 is the sequel that truly showcased the capabilities of the original game. The story of Gordon Freeman taking charge of forming an uprising against the Combine is punctuated with plenty of set-piece moments, and the many physics-based puzzles that pepper the story were ahead of their time. It’s possible that you might notice some pacing issues when comparing it to more break-neck modern titles, but Half-Life 2 holds up surprisingly well even after all these years.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doubles the action and the fun by letting you switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales at the flip of a button. It’s a sequel that knows what works within the context of the franchise, and does everything in its right to make the adventure a grandiose one that’s filled to the brim with interesting boss fights and a myriad of main missions that should keep you busy for hours on end.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne thrusts players into a wondrous world that feels like the embodiment of your worst nightmares, and tasks you to trudge through labyrinthian levels that continue to get increasingly brutal with new kinds of enemies and obstacles. The combat dares you to get up close and aggressively push back against enemies, but being reckless with your actions will get you nowhere.

Shadow of the Colossus (2005)

Fumito Ueda is a master of creating games that have a strong foundation of core gameplay ideas, and those merits shine extremely brightly in his original 2005 PlayStation 2’s release of Shadow of the Colossus. It tells a surprisingly emotional story about a boy tracking down Colossi to bring a girl back to life, and each of the sixteen boss fights has been meticulously constructed with great attention to detail making it a truly special experience.

Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City took Batman from the claustrophobic corridors of Arkham Asylum to the large open expanse of Arkham City. The story features plenty of different villains from Gotham’s Rogues gallery, and it’s all stitched beautifully through some amazing gameplay sequences and an open world that’s just an absolute joy to explore.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Splinter Cell stands tall as one of the most prestigious stealth action franchises of all time, and Chaos Theory might just be the peak experience that it has to offer. The level designs are varied and require players to be thoughtful of each and every action they take, and the feeling of sneaking right past enemy guards in pitch-black corridors is just something truly special. Chaos Theory might be dated in some aspects, but it’s still a game that’s worth playing and worth appreciating to this date.

Alan Wake 2

The original Alan Wake was an inventive action horror game that had a unique setting and featured some impressive mechanics, but it’s Alan Wake 2 that does the needful changes and additions to fully realize the potential of the original game. Remedy’s excellent gameplay mechanics shine brightly, and the Northlight Engine does a wonderful job of presenting it all with astonishing attention to detail. It’s really hard to describe Alan Wake 2’s merits without spoiling it, so be sure to check it out.

God of War: Ragnarok

God of War: Ragnarok is an excellent culmination of the narrative that kickstarter with God of War 2018, and it’s a conclusion that’s well worth the massive journey. Ragnarok amps up the narrative’s emotional and action elements by eleven, and the gameplay has also seen iterative yet appreciated changes that make the end product a worthy sequel and one of the most impressive action-adventure games of all time. Once you are done with the campaign you can jump into the game’s rogue like mode which will add more hours to your gameplay.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a game that takes you through an unforgettable journey through The Lands Between. It’s a brutal game that asks a lot from the player, but investing something here will yield some intangible rewards that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is exactly what a massive adventure through a fantastical kingdom feels like. Set against the backdrop of a challenging setting, Baldur’s Gate 3 presents a barrage of gripping moments where you get to meet a bunch of characters from all walks of life – and go on massive treks and come across intimidating encounters. The gameplay is highly dynamic despite it being turn based, and it’s all executed at such a massive scale that it almost feels surreal.

Final Fantasy 16

To say that Final Fantasy 16 is one of the best games in this long-running genre would undoubtedly be a bold statement, but it’s not without its reasons. Final Fantasy 16’s action hack-and-slash game just fits the bill, and what we get is a game where the setting strongly resonates with the fast and frenetic gameplay – making for a tightly designed experience where everything beautifully meshes with one another.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Nintendo’s Super Mario offerings continue to be extremely enjoyable adventures for decades at this point, and a lot of that can be attributed to the constant evolution of the game’s level designs and the addition of new kinds of obstacles with each new release. Super Mario Bros. Wonder represents the latest in the line of long-running platformers, and it features a bevy of new obstacles ranging from dangerous level geometry to power-ups that turn Mario into a gargantuan elephant and much more.
