Reports and rumors surrounding a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake have been piling up for a while now, and in this feature, we’ll be breaking down the biggest clues and findings so far.

The Resident Evil is easily one of the most important franchises for the horror genre, and it has reached an interesting place as of late. On one hand, we have a regular supply of new games trying out different ideas like Requiem or Village while on the other hand we are also receiving full-fledged remakes of classics, such as Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 as of late.

It’s a great time to be a Resident Evil fan, and while we have had a good amount of clarity on the roadmap for fresh releases, there have been lingering questions about the future of its remake initiatives. Fans have been extremely curious to know the next candidate for receiving a similar treatment. We believe that there’s a great chance that it’s going to be Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and there are plenty of reasons as to why that might be the case.

You see, the conversation around a potential Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake is not just about catering to the wishful thinking from fans – but it’s also backed by a steady stream of both official and unofficial signals that come together to suggest that something meaningful could be in the works. At the time of writing this feature, nothing has been formally announced by the developer – so you should note that this is one of those rare cases where anticipation is being fueled by a mix of ground truth and carefully interpreted speculation.

Resident Evil: Requiem has been absolutely great with stellar critical and commercial reception, raking in numerous praise from fans and selling millions of copies. We already know that the developer likes these games to breathe, so there’s little sense in expecting a brand new release or reveal when a steady stream of post-launch content is already planned for Requiem as of now. But internally, priorities have already been shifted and the developer is already looking into future projects.

On the official side, the developer’s stance has been telling but tight-lipped. Back in October 2022, the developer addressed the possibility of a Code Veronica remake, stating that there were no concrete plans at the time. However, they notably left the door open for discussions with statements such as “maybe”, and that response has aged in interesting ways, given the recent direction the franchise has taken. Jump to December 2023, and the developer confirmed that it intends to continue producing remakes within the Resident Evil series, though it once again stopped short of naming specific projects. That alone doesn’t confirm anything, but it does establish a clear intent that remakes are not slowing down anytime soon.

Understandably, talking about unnamed remakes doesn’t give away much about their existence, but there’s more to it. For instance, the developer in June 2023 asked fans which Resident Evil titles they would most like to see remade – and there’s a high chance that Code Veronica would have easily topped that list given that the initial classics have already been remade. While the results were never formally broken down in detail, Code Veronica has consistently ranked among the most requested entries in community conversations – so there’s reason to believe that this is indeed going to be the case. Of course, the question by the developer doesn’t confirm anything – but it strongly suggests that they are aware of and actively measuring demand for its next moves.

Where things become more concrete, although still unofficial, is in the wave of reports that began surfacing in early 2026. One of the most notable came from VGC, which reported in January that the next major Resident Evil remake is expected to be revealed sometime in 2026. More importantly, the report stated that it also “understands” that both Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero are currently in development. This particular report comes from reputable sources, so one should take this piece of information beyond the regular rumor territory.

That same report was further reinforced by industry insider Dusk Golem, who has a long track record of reporting on the franchise. According to him, the remake slated for reveal in 2026 would be Code Veronica rather than a more commercially obvious choice like Resident Evil 5. This aligns with the developer’s recent pattern of revisiting older, more structurally dated entries such as Resident Evil 3 Remake and modernizing them for a contemporary audience.

Another piece of reporting comes from NateTheHate, whose claims were later amplified by major outlets like Insider Gaming. According to these reports, the rumored Code Veronica remake is currently in deep development and is targeting a release window in the first half of 2027. In addition to this, reports by the aforementioned Dusk Golem also suggest that Code Veronica will be arriving first and Resident Evil Zero should follow soon in 2028. While these timelines are far from confirmed, the consistency across multiple reports adds a layer of credibility that’s hard to ignore.

What’s more interesting is that the rumors haven’t just been about timing, but they have also begun to touch upon the design philosophy. Shortly after the release of Resident Evil: Requiem, Dusk Golem also suggested that the remake will retain all major enemies, locations, and narrative beats from the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica, but with significant reworking of those mechanics in new and interesting ways. The claim is that nothing will be cut but rather expanded – particularly the roles of Chris Redfield and Claire Redfield. If it ends up being true, this would align with the developer’s recent remake strategy which is to preserve the core identity while enhancing pacing, characterization, and mechanical depth.

That said, it’s important to distinguish between what is likely and what is actually confirmed. The safest conclusions right now are relatively straightforward, and the bottom line is that the developer has clearly stated that it intends to continue making remakes. Code Veronica is one of the most requested titles in the franchise’s history. Multiple reputable outlets are now pointing to it as the next major remake, and that’s speculation. Beyond that, however, specific release windows, narrative changes, development timelines – everything still falls under informed speculation rather than verified facts.

You also have to understand that the reason Code Veronica keeps resurfacing in these discussions isn’t just because of rumors, but also because it makes strategic sense. Unlike more recent entries, it hasn’t benefited from modern reimaginings or widespread re-releases in the same way. It also occupies a unique place in the series timeline, bridging narrative threads between earlier and later entries while featuring two of the franchise’s most recognizable protagonists. All in all, it’s the most logical candidate to receive the remake treatment.

On an interesting note, the remake has been teased in Requiem. A closer look at Wrenwood’s hotel register through photo mode has sparked fresh speculation among fans, with one detail in particular standing out: Alyssa isn’t merely listed as the final guest, but as the ninth guest, a detail some are reading as a deliberate nod to Resident Evil 9. The intrigue does not end there either, because another name on the register, “Veronica,” has also drawn attention for its possible connection to Code Veronica.

Further details from the lkes of DuskGolem, and ScreenFire Germany reveal that the remake will have darker horror tone, a more Claire driven story, fully playable opening with stealth elements, expanded roles for Rodrigo and Wesker, and heavier engagement with the Ashfords’ history. At the same time, the more ambitious gameplay claims, especially the semi-open Rockfort Island, motorcycle traversal, and broader structural remixing, are exactly the sort of details that make fans wary, so treat those elements with skepticism.

There’s also the matter of historical performance, which also adds business sense to the conversation. According to the developer’s own data, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X has sold around 1.40 million units, while the original Dreamcast version reached approximately 1.14 million. These numbers don’t rival the series’ biggest hits, but they’re strong enough to justify revisiting the title, especially when you factor in the sustained fan demand. In the modern market, where remakes can dramatically outperform their originals, Code Veronica represents both a nostalgic asset and an opportunity for reinvention.

While Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake has not been confirmed in an official capacity, but the sheer volume and consistency of recent reports related to the matter suggest that it is more than just a distant possibility. It sits at the very convenient intersection of fan demand, strategic logic, and credible insider claim which is a really strong position for a project that technically doesn’t exist yet.

And that’s what makes this prospect so compelling; this isn’t just another rumor cycle built on vague hints and wishful thinking. It’s a convergence of signals pointing in the same direction. Until the developer steps forward with a formal reveal, there will always be an element of uncertainty – but all signs point towards Code Veronica Remake’s existence not being a question of if but a question of when.

What should we expect from the next few years of Resident Evil?

We’re in a second golden age of Resident Evil now, with Capcom’s survival horror franchise having delivered a string of all-time classics ever since RE7 turned its fortunes around in 2017. Whether its remakes or new mainline entries, pretty much everything Resident Evil does these days turns to gold, so it’s only natural that there’s always plenty of excitement and curiosity surrounding what the future holds for the series.

Of course, that’s something that we currently don’t have a ton of concrete details on. We can obviously take for granted the fact that Capcom has multiple Resident Evil games in the works and lined up for release over the coming years- that much would be obvious even in the absence of any communication whatsoever from the company itself. But the exact nature of those plans is something that we don’t yet know much about. As ever though, we do have leaks and rumours to fall back on.

Interestingly enough, leaks have also claimed that, yes, Capcom does indeed have multiple RE titles in the works simultaneously. More specifically, prominent insider and leaker Dusk Golem (aka AestheticGamer) claimed earlier in the year that as many as five Resident Evil titles are in the works– and if the leaker’s claims are anything to go by, we know what at least three of those games will be.

Unsurprisingly, one is Resident Evil 9, or whatever Capcom ends up calling the series’ next mainline numbered entry, i.e. the follow-up to Resident Evil Village. The game is allegedly going to leverage the RE Engine’s new open world tech (which it now boasts courtesy of Dragon’s Dogma 2), which likely means it’ll be a wider and more expansive experience than its predecessors, while it also allegedly has the largest ever development budget and longest ever development cycle for a Resident Evil game to date. Another source, Residence of Evil, has claimed that fan favourite series mainstays in Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine will return to share the spotlight as the protagonists, though Dusk Golem has refuted those claims- which means we’re going to have to wait for official word from Capcom for more clarity on what to expect.

When that official word will arrive is anyone’s guess. Very rarely does Capcom take off years with Resident Evil. With the exception of 2018 and 2024, it has released either a new Resident Evil game or new DLC for a previously released one every single year over the last few years, and under ordinary circumstances, that would mean RE9 would be more or less a lock for 2025. However, with Monster Hunter Wilds being Capcom’s big flagship release for the early months of next year, that would mean Resident Evil 9 would likely be releasing in the later months. The last several entries in the series have come out in the first half of their respective years, and though that doesn’t mean that RE9 can’t buck that trend, it does make it seem a little unlikelier. Even so, at the latest, we’d expect the game to release by the first few months of 2026, which means the wait for more information won’t be an interminable one, at the very least.

Beyond that, to no one’s surprise, it’s claimed that multiple Resident Evil remakes are also in the works. The series has been on a stellar run with its remakes, having enjoyed widespread critical and commercial acclaim across the board, which meant new remakes were pretty much a guarantee. What might take some by surprise, however, is the projects that Capcom has allegedly chosen to remake. Most would have figured that Resident Evil 5 would be the next natural choice, while many even wondered if the original Resident Evil could be in line for a second remake, this time bringing the classic into the modern era with an RE Engine third-person reimagination.

However, based on what Dusk Golem claimed earlier in the year, neither of those two are being remade– yet, at the very least. Instead, Capcom is allegedly developing remakes of Resident Evil: Code – Veronica and Resident Evil Zero. The former is something that many fans have been begging for for a while now, and though the latter is considered one of the franchise’s black sheep, it’s a game that many feel could benefit massively from a facelift and a reimagining. The prospect of remakes of the two titles is certainly an exciting one, then, especially because of how unexpected it is.

Interestingly, it’s claimed that the Zero remake isn’t actually being handled by Capcom internally, with external teams K2 and M-Two supposedly leading the charge for the project, with Capcom overseeing. For those unfamiliar, those were the teams that handled the Resident Evil 3 remake, a game that has a decidedly spottier reputation that virtually every other modern Resident Evil title, which means there will likely be some who will be skeptical about what that means for the Zero remake. Given the fact that Code – Veronica is the unquestionably bigger and more significant title, however, it makes sense that Zero has been handed to an external team while Capcom itself takes care of more pressing projects. Besides, Resident Evil 3 is, at the very least, a fun, well-made game, even with its flaws, so hopefully, Zero will at least be on that same level, if not better.

Beyond that, what the other two Resident Evil games are besides the three we’ve touched on is a mystery. It’s possible that early work has already started on the next mainline Resident Evil entry after RE9- after all, RE9 itself has allegedly been in development since 2018, three years before even Village had come out, so it wouldn’t be inconceivable for Capcom to be adopting a similar approach for what comes next. That is all guesswork at best, however. Sure, RE9, Code – Veronica, and Zero are also all unconfirmed and unverified rumours, which is only a little worse than guesswork- but in the absence of official information, it is better than guesswork.

What’s exciting about Resident Evil right now is that it seems like Capcom has a vast treasure trove of past material and new ideas to dive into for future instalments. Where new entries are concerned, given the series’ vast web of narrative threads, characters, settings, and flavours, it feels like there’s so much a new Resident Evil could do, while in the remake department, Capcom clearly won’t be running out of games to remake and improve anytime soon. That RE5 remake is an inevitability, even if it’s not being made right now, and we’d bet that another RE1 remake will eventually happen as well. Can we maybe also expect a Resident Evil 6 remake down the line? That remains to be seen, but the fact that it’s a possibility, and the fact that even a game as disastrous as RE6 would make for an exciting remake in this age of Resident Evil, tells you all you need to know about the excellent shape the beloved horror franchise currently finds itself in.

If recent rumours are accurate and RE0 and Code Veronica are indeed being remade, series fans have every reason to be excited.

After the recent back-to-back successes of Resident Evil remakes, there was little doubt in anyone’s mind that Capcom wasn’t going to slow that train down anytime soon. The company itself confirmed last year that it had every intention to keep developing more Resident Evil remakes, and though we’ve yet to hear any official details on those plans, recent leaks have indicated that the company has already taken several steps to put those plans into practice. Interestingly enough, however, it doesn’t look like Capcom has chosen the games for Resident Evil’s next remakes that many would have deemed the likeliest candidates to be remade next.

After having delivered remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 in recent years, most would have expected that Capcom would stick with the series’ numbered entries. The company had already skipped Code Veronica before moving to 4, which meant that the majority of series fans were confident that Resident Evil 5 would be the next remake (especially because ending scenes in Resident Evil 4 and its DLC, Separate Ways also seemed to be pointing to an imminent RE5 remake). At the same time, many in the fanbase also felt that it was only a matter of time before Capcom went back and did another remake of Resident Evil 1.

According to recent leaks, however, neither of those two is being remade. As per prominent insider Dusk Golem, Capcom is currently working on remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica (which, as per the insider, are two among five Resident Evil games that are currently being worked on, Resident Evil 9 being another one). Other reliable sources like IGN and VGC’s Andy Robinson have also corroborated Dusk Golem’s claims, which means it’s looking more than a likely at this point that the next remakes we see from Resident Evil are going to be ones that not many would have expected to see.

Obviously, Zero and Code Veronica aren’t numbered games, while the two of them also don’t enjoy the sort of universally glowing reputation that a lot of other, previously remade Resident Evil games did, all of which is to say that Capcom likely would have viewed them as less financially attractive prospects than full-fledged numbered Resident Evil games- a notion that many would say was proven accurate when, after Resident Evil 3, Capcom chose to remake Resident Evil 4 instead of Code Veronica, even though the latter was what the series’ chronology demanded.

But as unlikely as remakes of Zero and Code Veronica would have seemed to many – especially at a point where Capcom does have other numbered Resident Evil games to turn to as options when deciding what to remake next – in my view, it’s the best possible decision that Capcom could have made for Resident Evil and its fans at this point, and for multiple reasons.

The biggest and most obvious of those reasons is the plain and simple fact that remakes of RE Zero and Code Veronica are just much more interesting prospects than remakes of, say, RE1 and RE5. For starters, we’ve already had a remake of Resident Evil 1, and it was already an unabashed masterpiece. Sure, the remake itself is quite an old game at this point, and another take on the classic that reimagines it as a third-person game built in the RE Engine does sound like a salivating prospect- but a remake of a game that has already received a pretty darn good remake in the past is inherently an idea with more than a little friction.

Then you have Resident Evil 5, which doesn’t feel like it’s in need of a remake. Sure, the game is a decade and a half old at this point, but it doesn’t feel that old. It doesn’t have all the polish and gameplay improvements of modern Resident Evil games, and obviously, its visuals and tech have aged (as well as aspects of its story and writing), but all things considered, Resident Evil 5 is still a hell of an action game, especially if you’re playing co-op. Could it be even better with a remake? Sure. But it wouldn’t be the sort of exciting, radical leap forward that gets you out of your seat.

You know what would be that kind of a leap? You guessed it. Either Zero or Code Veronica would almost definitely get that sort of a leap. Both of them are games from Resident Evil’s fixed cameras era, which means their remakes are going to feel similar in the magnitude of their changes to the likes of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Visually, mechanically, narratively, and from a design perspective, Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica’s remakes are both going to look and feel significantly different than the originals, and that in and of itself makes them much more exciting than other potential RE remakes.

And yes, both games are going to require significant reimagining, because both of them have major issues in different areas that drag them down- issues that Capcom will have to address as priorities if it wants the remakes to be received well. Resident Evil Zero’s lack of item boxes and its character swapping mechanics led to some of the game’s most frustrating aspects, while Code Veronica is notoriously poorly tuned with its resources, difficulty, and design, in addition to having an infamously off-rails and over-the-top story.

Obviously, Capcom will have to keep a lot of those elements in place, otherwise, why even bother remaking those games, right? For instance, you can’t imagine a Code Veronica without characters such as Steve or the Ashford twins, even if they weren’t exactly the most universally beloved characters, and similarly, you can’t imagine Resident Evil Zero without having players frequently switching between Rebecca and Billy. The company will, however, have to find a way to heavily rework and redesign those problematic elements.

Characters will have to be entirely rewritten, performances will need to be completely new takes, mechanics and significant portions of the design will have to be entirely overhauled- remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica will likely be radical overhauls, a lot of which will simply be down to just plain necessity. And isn’t that a much more interesting way to remake a game than the much more conservative approach Capcom undoubtedly would have taken with Resident Evil 5? And sure, an entirely new vision of what Spencer Mansion and its iconic, horrifying hallways can look like is an alluring idea, to say the very least- but given the option, we’d much rather hold off on that and prioritize other remakes first.

Sure enough, it seems like that’s exactly what Capcom has done as well. There’s absolutely no way that the company isn’t eventually going to get to remakes of Resident Evil 1 and 5- one way or another, and at some point in the future, both of those are absolutely, without a shadow of doubt going to happen. But in holding those games back for now and deciding to go with Zero and Code Veronica first, not only has the company gone with the more creatively interesting picks that will give their developers much greater freedom in how they choose to recreate the source material, it has also ensured that it isn’t going to have to worry about having run out of games to remake anytime soon. Until then, we couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica receiving the sort of remake treatment that other games in the franchise have enjoyed in recent years.

From the terrifying and nail-biting to insanely over-the-top, some of Resident Evil's final bosses deserve serious recognition.

The Resident Evil franchise is one of the longest-running in gaming, and its story has seen tons of twists and turns. There have been incredible villains (and major disappointments) and enormous set pieces, and despite how ridiculous things could get, its boss fights remain memorable. Let’s look at 10 of the best final bosses in the series, which ended their respective games on an emotional high.

HAOS – Resident Evil 6

There are a few positive things about Resident Evil 6, but the final boss of Chris’s story, a massive BOW named HAOS, was pretty good. The fight begins as a sheer spectacle, with Chris and Piers using gunfire to wear the creature down. Just when they think it’s done, it gives chase through the narrow corridors of the underwater lab.

Piers becomes injured, and it seems Chris is done for, but not before the former infects himself and mutates to fire lightning at HAOS. Of course, even when the creature looks defeated, it comes back one last time to stop Chris from escaping, leading Piers, who stayed in the facility to sacrifice himself, stopping it and saving Chris one last time.

The upcoming Dead Space remake looks absolutely amazing, and we really hope that these games return with a similar treatment.

While there’s no shortage of new and interesting horror games coming in the near future, it’s only natural that we crave to see classics of the genre reappear with a fresh coat of paint. This is precisely why the upcoming Dead Space remake has been the subject of so much hype and anticipation, and also why Capcom has been hard at work on remakes of early Resident Evil games. Of course, we’d really like to see many other games receive the same treatment. To that effect, here are 15 horror games that we would like to see return as remakes.

The Evil Within

Tango Gameworks made a splashing debut with The Evil Within back in 2014, which went down as one of the best horror games of the generation. While the game is still playable by modern standards, the graphics and gameplay have started to show some noticeable cracks. As such, a modern remake with updated graphics and smoothed-out gameplay mechanics would really make fans want to re-experience the classic all over again.

Some boss fights offer a modicum of hope. However, these 12 bosses will insist on crushing you right away with very little effort.

Boss fights where you have no chance of killing the boss, much less winning, are fairly typical in games. They serve a multitude of purposes, from advancing the narrative to kick-starting the player’s growth in power. Let’s take a look at 12 video game bosses that couldn’t be killed, no matter what you did. Story spoilers follow so be warned.

Phylaks, the Warrior – Destiny 2: Beyond Light

Much of the story in Destiny 2: Beyond Light focuses on harnessing the power of Stasis. Before that though, the player encounters Eramis in Riis-Reborn as she bestows Stasis powers to her followers in the House of Darkness. Upon being discovered, there’s no other choice but to run. Phylaks, the Warrior, also appears to stop you but is completely immune to any damage. Eventually you’ll come back and use the power of Stasis to defeat her before taking down Eramis herself.

For as frightening as the Resident Evil series can be thanks to its monsters, these foes and bosses ranged from embarrassing to plain bad.

In a franchise that delves with all kinds of viruses, mutations and strange happenings, it’s somewhat expected that Resident Evil’s foes would go from terrifying to laughable. They can’t all be the next Nemesis, Mr. X or Licker, sadly. Let’s take a look at 15 enemies and bosses from the series that were hilariously awful.

Leeches – Resident Evil Zero

Leeches can be pretty gross but being attacked by a swarm of leeches in Resident Evil Zero skirts the line between weird and cheesy. It’s like the franchise has finally jumped the shark, which is saying something when it’s already had zombie sharks. There was an attempt to make the leeches out to be a big deal, especially since they’re used to create the t-Virus, but seeing them band together to form a replica of James Marcus feels more awkward than threatening.

Take a look back at the big moments that have defined Capcom's horror series.

The first Resident Evil debuted on the PS One in 1996, kick-starting an entirely new genre of horror and action. Throughout its many sequels, prequels and spin-offs, not to mention remakes and ports, Resident Evil had its share of middling failures and overwhelming successes. However, the sheer number of awesome moments it’s provided have been worth the chaotic journey. Let’s take a look at 25 of the best moments from the entire franchise though be warned that spoilers abound for pretty much every game.

The First Zombie – Resident Evil (1998)

For many fans, it all started here. Even with its hilariously bad voice-acting and cheesy characters, the encounter with the very first zombie was perfect. Jill/Chris enters and sees a perp hunched over a corpse as chewing sounds can be heard. As it notices their presence, a decapitated, half-chewed head falls to the ground and it slowly turns around. It may not be the sharpest cutscene by today’s standards but the look in its eyes would herald the horror to come for decades.

Capcom's illustrious horror franchise has had some crazy moments. Let's look back on them here.

Resident Evil 3, a remake of the 1999 PS One classic, is out soon, bringing the escape from Raccoon City and battle with the Nemesis to current gen consoles. What better way to celebrate than to look back on the moments that best defined the series? Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

The First Zombie Encounter- Resident Evil 1

This is where it all started. Alpha Team takes refuge in a mysterious mansion after a pack of ravenous dogs kills one of their members. From there, the player controls either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Upon exploring the mansion, they see it – a zombie, munching on a body and slowly rising to face them, its mangled face apparent. As far as moments go, this would define the horror franchise for years to come.

Some of the greatest Resident Evil monsters of all time

Throughout its long history, the Resident Evil franchise has terrified players with all manner of freaks and monstrosities, but it’s hard to think of a single enemy type that has left as much of a mark on the series as the bioweapons known as Tyrants. The T-002 served as the final boss in the very first Resident Evil, and since then, many other kinds of Tyrants have made appearances in multiple instalments. Soon, history will repeat itself, as Nemesis chases us across Raccoon City once again when Resident Evil 3 launches not long from now. Here in this feature, we’ll be ranking all the Tyrants that have appeared in Resident Evil games over the years from worst to best.

#13. T-091

APPEARANCES: Resident Evil: Dead Aim

When the series’ lore itself tells you that the T-091 was, more or less, a failure, you can’t help but agree. Created by Umbrella through an experiment that saw them make a Tyrant with both, the t-Virus and the G-Virus, the T-091 turned out to be not at all what they were expecting. It did not produce a bio-electrical current, which they wanted it to, and its heart stuck out its back, which made it much more vulnerable than any other Tyrant model. It did, however, have tentacles instead of claws, which sort of set it apart in an interesting way. Anyway, given the fact that Dead Aim was a light gun shooter, battles against the T-091 weren’t all that challenging, especially given the fact that it had a pretty obvious weak point.
