Next week's free game is The Messenger, a Ninja Gaiden-inspired platformer.

It’s a new week for freebies on the Epic Games Store. Costume Quest and SOMA are gone and Nuclear Throne, a top-down roguelike shooter from Vlambeer is in. Reikon Games’ Ruiner, another top-down shooter but set in a cyberpunk city, is also free.

Enter the Gungeon and The Binding of Isaac fans will probably like Nuclear Throne. You battle through a post-nuclear series of levels, battling other mutants and gathering weapons – along with taking on perks through mutations – to eventually claim the titular Nuclear Throne. It’s tough but fairly addicting.

Ruiner might be more interesting due to its neo-noir aesthetic and extensive gritty violence. It’s not a roguelike but there are a series of weapons, upgrades and some strong melee combat features to keep you hooked. Both games will be available November 14th. The next free title will be Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger, a retro platformer that’s inspired by Ninja Gaiden.

Ruiner just got a whole more edgier (and fun) thanks to the latest content update.

Reikon Games’ Ruiner has a received the new Savage update which brings some interesting new modes and features to the game. The top-down shooter now has a New Game Plus mode to keep you further entrenched should you feel like taking a break.

A new Speedrun Mode has also been added to the experience. Lacking a prologue, cutscenes and any dialogue, Speedrun Mode is all about killing and watching the timer. Simply head into Game Modes from the main menu to select it. Leaderboards have also been added to help players track scores.

Nine new weapons have also been brought to the forefront and there are new Ruiner Kill finishers on top of that. Seven new outfits have also been added with some being free and others requiring you to pay “with blood”. Is that the new name for EA’s Crystals?

If that weren’t enough, two new songs from Sidewalks and Skeletons have also been added to the game. With Ruiner discounted on Steam by 33 percent, now is as good a time as ever to hop in.

Reikon Games' violent isometric shooter offers many ways to efficiently kill.

Devolver Digital’s Ruiner has been out for a few days and garnered positive reviews overall. The isometric shoot ’em up actually has an intriguing atmosphere and story but for the most part, players are immersed in all the different ways to murder foes.

In response to this, Devolver has released a new trailer which showcases some of the more advanced loadouts players can use. For instance, you can combine the Energy Shield and Dash to effectively charge at foes and knock them down, thus opening them up to further punishment.

Kinetic Barrier and Focused Slash allows you to make a stronghold of sorts and slice foes mercilessly at some distance. And the best part about Ruiner’s abilities is that you can change them on the fly by allocating experience points in different areas. There are some pretty cool loadouts to be had.

Ruiner is currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The hyper-violent, cyberpunk top-down shooter is now available.

Remember that one trippy cyberpunk action title that appeared during Devolver Digital’s hallucinogenic E3 presser? That was Ruiner developed by Reikon Games, and it’s now officially available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC at just £14.99/$19.99. You can download it via Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, GOG and the Humble Store.

Set in 2091 within the cybercity Rengkok, Ruiner focuses on a particularly murderous individual (aka the player) who wants to take revenge against the system and rescue his brother.

A mysterious hacker will be helping you along the way as you take advantage of various tools, crazy reflexes and whatever weapons you can find to kill your enemies. There’s a theme here about the evil corporation in question using virtual reality to bring real sensations to its viewers that will likely unfold in some dastardly twist.

Either way, if you seek a new top down shooter, Ruiner might be what you’re looking for. Check out the launch trailer below and see if the gameplay is to your tastes.

Big names, indie titles, sports games and much more dot September's line-up.

If you thought August was absolutely massive for games, then you’d be right. That being said, September is no slouch and there are some massive names releasing alongside stellar indie titles, epic RPGs and not one but two big football titles. Let’s take a look at 19 big games releasing in September.

Knack 2

When the first Knack released, intrigue gave way to disappointment as the story and gameplay were just…meh. Let’s not forget about the erratic difficulty. Knack 2 is apparently looking to fix all of that by offering more complex combat, better gameplay balance, improved platforming and so on. It also doesn’t hurt that co-op returns with the ability to drop in and drop out. It obviously remains to be seen how the final product pans out but Knack 2 is still worth watching out for when it releases on September 5th for PS4.

This looks like cyberpunk Hotline Miami. Which is awesome.

RUINER, a brand new cyberpunk shooter from developer Reikon Games and publisher Devolver Digital, is due out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 26. The game will be a top down shooter, and will have you play as a ‘wired sociopath’ who is trying to rescue his kidnapped brother, and also taking on a corrupt society for good measure along the way.

The game, which will feature the kind of fast combat people have come to associate with Devolver’s top down action game efforts, will also have a soundtrack filled with big names- Khoven, DJ Alina, and the famous anime composer Susumu Hirasawa will all be contributing to the music in the game.

You can check out the trailer below to see what the game will be like for yourself- to me, the trailer seems to be reminiscent of Hotline Miami in all the best possible ways, which means I am all on board with this game.

Devolver Digital have announced a brand new anime inspired cyberpunk shooter exclusively for PC- it’s called Ruiner, and it seems to be channelling the classic cyberpunk movie Blade Runner.

“A wired sociopath lashes out against a corrupt system to uncover the truth and retrieve his kidnapped brother under the guidance of a secretive hacker friend,” reads the game’s description. “Combine preternatural reflexes, augmented tools, and the arsenal of fallen foes to tear down and dismantle the corporate titans of virtuality dealers at HEAVEN.”

Devolver Digital promise an ‘exceptional soundtrack’ for the game- which we can believe, since their other published projects, such as Hotline Miami, have been known for their great soundtracks before.

You can check out the trailer for the game below. Ruiner is being developed by Polish studio Reikon Games, and will be coming exclusively to PC later this year. As of right now, no console versions have been announced.
