Blending movement-based fighting with elemental bending and varied playstyles, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is set to bring more than a series tie-in.

While fighting games thrive on strong mechanics, distinct characters, and competitive depth, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game also looks to style the genre’s regular staples with exhilarating, movement-based action. Blending elemental bending straight outta the anime series with the nuts and bolts of traditional fighting games, studio Gameplay Group International promise a mix of accessibility and depth for both newcomers and veterans alike. Without further ado, here’s fifteen things you need to know before you buy.

A 2D Fighter With Characters From the Avatar Legends Franchise

Set within the storied anime franchise Avatar Legends, where nations are characterised by a certain element – fire, earth, water, air – this upcoming 1v1 2D fighter is hand-drawn, styled to mirror the expressive animation of the series. Set specifically between shows’ The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game mixes classic mechanics with fluid movement and modern control schemes in an experience the devs say is designed for both newcomers, Avatar fans, and fighting game veterans alike.

Combat Revolves Around a Flow Mechanic

At the core of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game’s combat is the Flow Mechanic, a system designed to showcase your character’s agility through a suite of evasive and defensive counters. So, alongside inputs for light, medium, and heavy, the dedicated Flow button brings a wide range of movement options: from auto guards and auto parries, to extended dashes across the ground and through the air. Character-specific manoeuvres can be chained together with basic inputs, encouraging you to master each fighter’s individual moveset.

Manage Chi to Maximise Flow

So, as you’ll probably have guessed: Flow isn’t an infinite resource – you’ll need to spend Chi to execute its varied manoeuvres, defensive capabilities, and combo extensions. But, unlike other fighting games, Chi doesn’t charge when you deal or take damage. In fact, you’ll begin every round with your Chi meter fully charged, with it regenerating passively throughout each bout. With guarding and evading integral to Flow, the idea with Chi, it seems, is to always make sure you have some in reserve. You don’t want to get caught Chi-less, else you’ll enter an “unbalanced” state whereby you’ll be locked out of Flow Mechanics.

Auto-Combos Welcome Beginners

Flow’s universal auto-parry isn’t the only automatic mechanic available to you, but auto-combos are built into the default four-button control scheme enabling beginners to get to grips with stringing multiple attacks together easily. Fighting game veterans will want to chain combos together manually, as auto-combo damage output is scaled significantly, meaning they deal far less damage than traditional combo chaining. Still, baseline damage is respectable, making auto-combos a worthwhile learning tool.

Twelve Characters in Launch Roster

Yes, on launch, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game features twelve playable characters, each bringing unique bending abilities, personalities, stances, variations, and playstyles – ensuring they feel distinct not just in visuals but in how they control. The devs have poured their knowledge of the franchise into each character’s moveset, basing much of their fighting prowess on their in-show background. Whether you pick your favourite character from the franchise as your main, or you opt to experiment, you’re sure to find a style that suits you.

Certain Characters Bring Multiple Fight Modes

Some fighters add an extra layer of depth through stance or mode switching during bouts. Azula, for instance, can transition between a precise, calculated Focused Mode and a more aggressive Firelord Mode, while Zuko can swap between his specialised firebending and a dual broadsword style. One on hand, these shifts are emblematic of character backgrounds, but in-game they can dramatically change your options for movement, delivering pressure, and strategy.

Primary Fighters Bring a Support Character

Alongside your chosen fighter, you’ll also choose a support character from a pool of three who’ll influence your main’s fighting style whilst also granting distinct special moves. Aang’s support character Gyatso, for instance, offers better Air Scooter speed control, while Korra’s support Raava grants longer Avatar States. These allies, effectively, let you customise your playstyle beyond your chosen character, adding a layer of team synergy without turning the game into a tag fighter.

Benders and Non-Benders Alike Are Balanced

To keep the roster balanced, the dev team imbues non-bending characters with unique skills. Instead of spiritual, elemental abilities, they’re outfitted with weapons, traps, and other tools, as well as specialised “Chakra Arts” that’ll give them distinct advantages over their bending counterparts. Faster Chi recovery is another boon for non-benders, allowing them access the benefits of Flow State more readily, to continue adding pressure while offsetting the power of elemental bending.

Story and Arcade Modes Available

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game ships with a solid range of modes. A narrative-driven Story Mode sits alongside the more traditional Arcade ladder. Elsewhere, a versus option covers both online and offline play. Training and spectator modes round out your options, ensuring there’s something here whether you’re learning the ropes or just watching high-level matches play out.

Online Supported By Rollback Netcode

It’s a given with modern fighting game standards that online functionality is supported by rollback netcode, and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is no different. Rollback netcode will keep matches responsive, even across long distances. Meanwhile, full cross-play means you can play against anyone, regardless of platform. Finally, both ranked and casual matches are available, catering to competitive grinders as much as those after a more laid-back brawling session.

Robust Training Mode Included

For both newcomers and those looking to dig deeper, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game ships with a robust training mode which offers a comprehensive suite of practice tools, including visible hitboxes, detailed frame data, and the ability to save set states. Precise practice sessions and experimentation are catered for alike, making it easier to learn and perfect character dynamics, optimise combos, and understand the game’s finer mechanics beyond surface level ease.

An Art Gallery is Also Included

Signalling a deep affiliation with the source material, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game also includes an Art Gallery, celebrating the legacy of the Avatar universe. Featuring original artwork from the show, it offers a more relaxed way for series novices and fandom alike to engage with the world and its characters.

Release Date, Platforms, and Price

After a string of delays and reschedules, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is set to release on July 23rd, with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC the official launch platforms. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are incoming at a later date. The game’s Standard Edition is priced at $29.99, with a Deluxe Edition retailing at $49.99.

Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Bonuses Overview

The Immortal, Universa, a few comic-accurate costumes, and the addition of a key player from the franchise lore make this one quite the addition.

Invincible VS has just given us a new look at all the DLC it’s currently planning to bring to the game over the course of Season 1, and Quarter Up and Skybound are really putting their love for the franchise on display. We already know that The Immortal is joining the game’s roster, and that he’s quite a powerhouse when it comes to laying a beat-down on those who have wronged him.

The noble Universa has also been showcased, and she seems to be quite adept at dishing out damage while avoiding it. We can’t wait to see what she brings to the table in terms of her move set and abilities.

There are a few costumes, both paid and free, for you to grab, and they’re quite a good indicator of where the show is going after that bombshell that dropped at the end of its last season. Of course, those of you who’ve read the comics know what’s coming for Mark and his pals.

Of course, it’s the official announcement of Angstrom Levy that has us quite eager for the next few months to fly by, as we can’t wait to see how his initially noble intentions that gave way to a single-minded thirst for revenge against Invincible are going to play out in the game. All in all, it’s looking like a jolly good time with this one, and there’s also the prospect of guest characters from other franchises to be excited about, if Quarter Up gets its way.

Characters like Spider-Man, and even Mortal Kombat roster members like Sub-Zero and Scorpion would be welcome in Invincible VS.

In an era where fighting games are more than happy to bring in guest characters from other franchises, like Street Fighter 6 bringing in Final Fantasy 7’s Tifa Lockheart, or Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves bringing in Fist of the North Star’s Kenshiro, Invincible VS developer Quarter Up has expressed similar interest in guest characters as well. In an interview with MMORPG.com, game director Dave Hall and lead combat designer Bau Bautista spoke about how cool it would be to see a character like Spider-Man taking on Omni-Man.

“We’re always down for a crossover,” said Hall when asked about a potential Spider-Man crossover. “I think it’s really exciting to think about, and let’s hope we can do some in the future, but nothing that we can talk about right now. We’re definitely not above that, and we would love to have a chance to work with legendary characters like Spider-Man.” He went on to even name-drop Mortal Kombat characters. “We’d love to have Sub-Zero and Scorpion! Bring them over; that’d be great.”

“If we have that opportunity, we will definitely take it because those characters are iconic as hell and being able to bring them to Invincible to see how they fit in our meta would be awesome,” added Bautista.

It is worth noting that characters from Mortal Kombat would be a much better fit for the kind of violence that is possible in Invincible VS. Much like the comic book and its animated adaptation by Amazon, the Invincible-based fighting game also has quite a bit of emphasis on the violence of the fights.

For the time being, however, Quarter Up is focused on bringing in more characters from the Invincible franchise into its fighting game. With Hall noting that the studio doesn’t quite have any major announcement regarding new characters or even a Nintendo Switch 2 port yet, Bautista said that the team is working hard on “some really awesome characters” for Invincible VS.

“We’re not announcing any new consoles or anything at the moment,” Hall said. “So, if we do anything like that, we’ll definitely have an announcement.”

“But we have some really awesome characters coming down the pipe that people are going to really love,” Bautista explained. “Every character is going to bring unique gameplay to it, and the meta is going to shift a little bit around that character. It’s going to be really exciting.”

Invincible VS is slated to bring in its newest roster addition, The Immortal, later this week. Leading up to the release, the studio had released a deep dive video on the character over the weekend, which placed quite a bit of emphasis on how lore-accurate his depiction in the fighting game would be.

Invincible VS is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. And take a look at our interview with executive producer Mike Willette and technical director Bill Merrill, who joined Hall in answering many of our questions.

What do you give a man who can do it all? The ability to do more! And that’s just what Quarter Up has done with The Immortal.

Remember when we told you about how Invincible VS has been impressing players with just how faithful it’s been to the animated TV show based on the comics?

Well, Quarter Up’s latest showcase of The Immortal, ahead of his June 30th debut alongside Universa as the first two DLC characters, is a showcase of how the team’s inspired by a very faithful recreation of Mark’s coming-of-age story. Of course, the man of the hour came of age so long ago he’s probably forgotten what it felt like, thanks to being killed by Omni-Man and his subsequent resurrection.

But he sure remembers how to give his opponents a righteous beat-down, with a bunch of mix-ups, launchers, an aerial triple dash, and a Berserker state that takes his combo potential to new heights. The showcase has us pretty excited to take control, since he packs some serious firepower and his anger at the injustice meted out makes him somewhat of a loose cannon, but the developer’s made that work in his favor. He’s powerful, cunning, and a very versatile fighter if you can master all of his moves.

Don’t believe us? You can see him in action for yourself, and catch how the team has snuck in a few references to the show.

Quarter Up also revealed the first two DLC characters coming to the tag fighter in the Summer: Universa and The Immortal.

You might have lost track of all the characters revealed for Quarter Up’s Invincible VS, a 3v3 tag fighter based on Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic/show. However, the 18th and final roster member has finally been revealed, and who else should it be but Conquest? Check out the Viltrumite’s raw power and unrelenting brutality below.

As the Empire’s “nuclear option,” Conquest is all about unrelenting brutality, completely dismantling anyone who gets in his way. His role is that of a Striker, with a special punch that can be charged. The longer the distance from an opponent, the faster it hits, making it easier to break through enemy attacks. His Super move is a thing of devastating beauty, especially in the moment of impact.

Of course, that’s not all. Quarter Up also announced that the upcoming open beta will feature Tutorial, Practice and Ranked Modes alongside its ten playable characters and six arenas. Participation is open from April 9th, 10 AM PT to April 11, 9 PM PT, with a free Omni-Man skin available as a reward for the main game.

Finally, the first two DLC characters, out in Summer 2026, have been revealed: Universa, who can drain energy from her opponents, and The Immortal, a Guardians of the Globe member who’s over 3,000 years old. Two additional characters will be revealed in the months ahead, so stay tuned.

Invincible VS launches on April 30th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The Viltrumites are out in force, with Anissa serving as a hard-hitting Striker and Lucan dishing out devastating throws as a Grappler.

Just when it seemed like the roster for Invincible VS, Quarter Up’s 3v3 fighter, couldn’t be more packed, it’s announced two more additions: Anissa and Lucan. Both members of the Viltrumite race, the same as Omniman. Check out their reveal trailer below.

Hailed as a powerful enforcer, Anissa is a Striker who excels in close-range combat, rushing down opponents and laying in with combos. Her dash attacks are also strong, helping her close the distance and set up for even more pain.

By comparison, Lucan is a Grappler who likes to throw opponents around. Beware of his hit grabs and low attacks, but don’t think you can escape in the air since he boasts exceptional mobility there. Pair the two together with Omniman, who functions as a Point fighter, and you have a devastating team on your hands.

Invincible VS launches on April 30th, retailing for $49.99 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The roster is looking pretty strong so far, featuring Invincible, Atom Eve, Battle Beast, Cecil Stedman, and more. You can look forward to 18 characters at launch, including the game-exclusive Ella Mental, so expect two more reveals in the coming weeks. But that’s far from the end. As part of the Year 1 Character Pass, four additional characters will be added post-launch.

Pre-orders are now available, and the $70 Deluxe Edition includes the Year 1 Character Pass for four additional characters.

Quarter Up’s Invincible VS introduced another addition to its roster of heroes, villains and anti-heroes, and this time, it’s Ella Mental. If you haven’t heard of her, don’t worry – she’s completely new to the franchise, making her debut in the fighter as a master of the elements.

On top of showcasing her moves, the developer announced a release date: April 30th, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Pre-orders are now available with the Standard Edition retailing for $49.99 and including Zero Suit Mark as a bonus (with four variants).

The Digital Deluxe Edition costs $69.99, and alongside the usual Deluxe Cosmetics, you get the Year 1 Character Pass. Two more characters will arrive post-launch in the coming months, with an additional two coming later.

Invincible VS will include 18 characters at launch, so four more don’t feel like the most solid expansion. At least we get the likes of Rex Splode, Monster Girl, Robot, and the GOAT, Cecil Stedman, from the get-go.

Watch the Guardians of the Globe members lay a brutal smackdown on their opponents in Quarter Up's upcoming 3v3 tag fighter.

Between Viltrumites and Battle Beast, I don’t know how much of a chance Monster Girl and Robot stand in Quarter Up’s Invincible VS. Then again, if Cecil Stedman can join the upcoming fighting game based on Amazon’s animated series, why not? Check them out in the latest trailer.

Thankfully, as members of the new Guardians of the Globe, they have some potent abilities. Robot can unleash an Iron Man-style laser from his chest alongside missiles, and even call in his ride to run over enemies. Monster Girl’s approach is a bit more straightforward, as she pummels enemies to the ground when not charging through them.

She even boasts a bit of Hyper Armor, not unlike Hulk from Capcom’s Marvel fighting games, capable of shrugging off multiple hits to keep pounding. As far as Super attacks go, Robot can call in a giant version of himself to fire a massive energy laser that decimates opponents. Meanwhile, Monster Girl will punch an enemy into the air, smash them, and temporarily transform back into her human form before dropping a Savage-style elbow.

For those who can’t wait until 2026 to go hands-on with the 3v3 fighter, a closed alpha is confirmed for November 21st to 24th. You can register here, though it’s only for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Running for about 50 minutes, the showcase will feature new trailers and gameplay from DON'T NOD, Thunderful, Hooded Horse, and more.

A new ID@Xbox Showcase has been announced for later this month in partnership with IGN. It will air on October 28th at 1 PM PT and offer 50 minutes of new trailers and gameplay from various indie game developers and publishers.

These include DON’T NOD, Hooded Horse, Thunderful, Thunder Lotus, Serenity Forge, Skybound Entertainment, Raw Fury, Pathea, Wired Digital, poncle, and Cult Games. The appearing titles have yet to be confirmed, but we could see the likes of The Lonesome Guild and Aphelion, the former published by DON’T NOD and out later this month. The latter is developed by the same and launching in 2026.

Hooded Horse could showcase Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, which was suddenly delayed to next year, while Serenity Forge may showcase its horror farming title, Fractured Blooms. How many of these will be available for Game Pass on day one? Time will tell, so stay tuned for more details.

The Global Defense Agency director joins the upcoming 3v3 tag fighter with its first closed alpha set for later this year.

In a universe with super-powered beings like Omni-Man and Battle Beast, the decision to include Cecil Stedman in Invincible VS may seem…odd. However, anyone who has read the comic or watched Amazon’s show knows how dangerous he can truly be. Check out how he plays in the upcoming tag fighter below.

Despite his frail appearance, Cecil possesses all kinds of weaponry, from energy weapons to grenades and teleportation (which works very nicely to juggle opponents). When things get too hairy, he can call in the Reanimen or an orbital strike courtesy of The Hammer. No, it didn’t really stop against Omni-Man, but it’s a spectacle.

Along with Cecil, developer Quarter Up has confirmed registrations for the closed alpha, which goes live later this year, are now available. Head here for more details. The exact content is unknown, but the full game promises between 15 and 20 characters alongside a Story Mode.

Invincible VS launches in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
