Publisher 2K has confirmed that the cult classic third person shooter won't be available on any digital store going forward.

When Yager Development and 2K’s Spec Ops: The Line launched over a decade ago, it didn’t exactly set the world on fire with its critical reception, nor was it a particularly successful game from a sales perspective. In the years since its release though, it’s accumulated a sizeable and vocal fan-following, with the third person shooter’s narrative strengths in particular having been showered with no small amount of praise.

Sadly, however, the game’s shelf life is effectively over. Spec Ops: The Line recently started being delisted from online stores, including both Steam and the Xbox store, and it was confirmed not long afterward by 2K that the shooter was set to be delisted from all online stores across the board due to expiring licenses.

A 2K representative told journalist Stephen Totilo, “Spec Ops: The Line will no longer be available on online storefronts, as several partnership licenses related to the game are expiring. Players who have purchased the game can still download and play the game uninterrupted. 2K would like to thank our community of players who have supported the game, and we look forward to bringing you more offerings from our label throughout this year and beyond.”

With Spec Ops: The Line being taken off digital stores, given the fact that it’s a twelve-year-old game that is available only on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, purchasing the game is going to be effectively impossible going forward, either physically or digitally.

Walt D. Williams, known for having written games such as Spec Ops: The Line and Star Wars Battlefront 2, is the Story Lead on Insomniac's Wolverine game.

When they announced Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games confirmed that the game was in very early development at the time, which obviously means it’s going to be a while before we see or hear more about the game. What little we do know, of course, has certainly got people excited, and recently, another reason to get excited has come to light.

As spotted over on Twitter by @shinobi602, the Story Lead for Marvel’s Wolverine at Insomniac Games is Walt D. Williams. In case you’re not familiar with his work, he was the Lead Writer on the excellent Spec Ops: The Line, and is also known for having written games like Star Wars Battlefront 2, Star Wars: Squadrons, and more. Also on the writing team for Wolverine, as pointed out by creative director Brian Horton, is Mary Kenney, who also worked on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Marvel’s Wolverine is in the works exclusively for the PS5. The aforementioned Horton recently confirmed that the game will have a “mature tone.” Read more on that through here.

A slew of games to help out the current pandemic.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks, if not months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are stuck at home, either through layoffs or self quarantine working remotely from home. While for some it’s little comfort, there are a lot of free and cheap games right now to at least keep you entertained. And now you can both do that and help out with the efforts to combat the virus.

It was announced via 2K’s official Twitter account that they will team with Humble Bundle for what they’re calling the Game Together bundle. It will include three tiers. For just a $1 you can get Spec Ops: The Line, Sid Meier’s Pirates!, The Darkness 2 and Carnival Games VR. If you donate more than the average you’ll also get BioShock: The Collection, Civilization III: Complete, The Golf Club 2019 and NBA 2K Playgrounds 2. If you go all the way and donate at least $20 (or more than that), you get all of that and WWE 2K20, NBA 2K20, XCOM: Enemy Unknown Complete Edition, Borderlands: Game of the Year Enhanced and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

However much you spend, it will go to support the International Medical Corps, which is one of the leading organizations working with the World Health Organisation to combat COVID-19. And you get a pretty good batch of games to help fill the time.

The exact opposite of a happy ending.

We all love a nice, clean ending where everyone goes riding off into the sunset to happily live out the rest of their days- but we don’t always get one. Sometimes, things just don’t pan out that way, and what we’re left with instead is games that hammer their brutality and unrelenting cruelty home with even crueler endings that devastate us to our very core. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen such endings.

It goes without saying, but owing to this feature’s nature, there will be major spoilers ahead for every game we speak about. So if you see us beginning to talk about a game you’d rather not have spoiled for you, go ahead and skip to the next entry.

PERSONA 3

Persona 3’s ending is an unpleasant one in a slightly different way- while we do end up managing to beat the larger threat and save the world and all that, it ends up extracting a heavy toll. The main protagonist ends up sacrificing himself to keep Nyx sealed away. It’s a much more personal loss, and sure, in the grand scheme of things the good outweighs the bad- but it still hits you like a ton of bricks.

"Gaze long into the abyss and the abyss also gazes into you" has never been truer for these characters.

What does it take to corrupt a hero and turn them into something darker? Even as some characters go through hell and become edgier in the process, it’s not always a detriment. Let’s take a look at 15 video game characters who went through this process and why.

Noctis – Final Fantasy 15

After being pulled into the Crystal and being absent from Eos for roughly a decade (it’s a long story), Noctis returns to a darker world as, well, a darker, more kingly figure. Not only did Noctis sport a beard in the time-skip but his entire demeanour evolved significantly from the annoying aloof prince. Thankfully, this resulted in him saving the world by defeating Ardyn and sacrificing himself to purge the Starscourge.

If things aren't always what they seem, it's most likely because they're not - like these hallucinatory scenes.

On their own, video games transport us to other worlds, teeming with immersion and fantastical elements. What happens when a game goes even further, causing the character to hallucinate or dream up even crazier, perhaps darker scenarios? Some games use this for narrative purposes and symbolism while others implement some pretty awesome mechanics for gameplay. Let’s take a look at 15 hallucinatory scenes in video games.

Valkyr-Induced Nightmare – Max Payne

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again – Max Payne has had it rough. After his wife and daughter were brutally murdered by junkies high on Valkyr, Max devotes himself to finding out who’s behind it all. Once that’s revealed near the end, Max is injected with Valkyr and starts reliving the memories of his family’s death. Except it’s incredibly nightmarish and full of such facets as walking a blood trail to his room and walls oozing blood.

Combat is an integral part of many games but it isn't always without consequences.

Video games serve a number of purposes, from unwinding to challenging one’s mind. While they also serve as a bastion of freedom, you’re not always free from the consequences of your actions. In fact, some games like reminding you of your misdeeds, even building their entire narrative structure on the same. So let’s take a look at 15 games that mock you for – you guessed it – murdering too many NPCs.

Ghosts With The Sorrow – Metal Gear Solid 3

Remember that fight with The Sorrow? The depressing trudge through the afterlife? As it turns out, the various ghosts represent the people that Snake has killed up till that point. So obviously, killing many enemies will see them appear. Of course, any experienced Metal Gear Solid player knows this isn’t the first time the game mocks you for your killing.

Sometimes you just want to keep going but the game has other ideas.

Video games are truly interesting creations. As much as developers want you to play a game, they also introduce creative methods to halt less-than-moral ways of playing it. Of course, some games tend to halt your progress in creative ways, even if you ultimately find a way through. Let’s take a look at 15 insane ways video games tried to stop you from playing.

No Faith – Mirror’s Edge

In a game that’s primarily about parkour, what happens when the protagonist can’t effectively rim? Such was the anti-piracy measure introduced in Mirror’s Edge. Every time Faith is close to a jump, she’ll slow down. This makes it impossible to go anywhere past the opening rooftop in the first stage. At least there’s the gorgeous view to admire.

In a sea of brown-grey military war shooters last gen came Spec Ops: The Line, another brown-grey military shooter that actually turned out to be a subversion of other similar games, and became one of the best written games on the market, and a shockingly nuanced commentary on the state of war.

It was an interesting game (even though the playing part of it was at best average) thanks to its storytelling capabilities—and if you haven’t had the chance to check it out yet, you can now! The PC version of the game is available for the grand price of absolutely nothing right now, thanks to the Humble Bundle (and will be for the next day and a half). The best part? This includes Mac and Linux too!

If you don’t have a PC, Mac, or Linux machine, well, you have other problems, but for the purposes of this article, Spec Ops: The Line is also available on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Whether its pushovers or powerhouses mercilessly trivialized, these bosses didn't take much to beat.

Some bosses are big challenges, demanding continuous retries. Others are smaller but still push you, providing a nice little fight en route to worse threats. However, there are some bosses that can be brushed aside rather easily. Whether it’s an hellacious boss taken down with an incredible build or actual pushovers, here are 15 bosses that took almost zero effort to beat. Spoilers in-bound.

Champion Gundyr – Dark Souls 3

So Champion Gundyr isn’t the toughest Dark Souls boss to beat and that’s perfectly fine since he’s the starting boss of Dark Souls 3. But why not trivialize the heck out of him anyway? Popular Souls one-shotter Ray Dhmitri used a number of buffs (Dragon Form, Flynn’s Ring etc.) along with the Fume Greatsword. He then went with a riposte attack to effectively kill Gundyr in one motion. Seems about right.
