CBS hopes to bring the brand to a new level.

While Star Wars has always had a steady presence in the gaming medium, its spiritual brother series, Star Trek, has never gotten a solid foothold. While there’s been games here and there, the most notable being the ongoing Star Trek Online MMORPG, it’s never managed to get its brand as far reaching as many would have hoped for. Now it seems the IP owner, CBS, is looking to change that with a new franchise initiative, which will include video games.

Via a press release, CBS announced a new global franchise group for pushing Star Trek in various mediums. The move comes after the franchise has seen a revival with the recent films and the current show, Star Trek: Discovery. The group will be managed by Executive Producers Veronica Hart and Alex Kurtzman. The series focuses largely on discovery and exploration, which seems to be a natural fit for gaming, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can translate that to the gaming medium.

The group will set out to “invigorate and broaden the Star Trek fan community through additional branding opportunities, such as podcasts, a reinvigorated StarTrek.com and new digital spaces, consumer products and gaming, as well as live experiential events and global attractions. These endeavors to further grow the brand are designed to complement the Studio’s expansion of the Star Trek universe, which now includes two live-action series, two animated projects, and multiple ‘shorts.’”

Currently, Star Trek Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The latest non-MMO title to be released was Ubisoft’s Star Trek: Bridge Crew, available on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Very few enemies have caused as much dread and despair as the Gorn in the Star Trek universe. The humanoid reptiles had only made a brief appearance in the episode “Arena” from the original series, but all that changes in the upcoming video game adaptation of the J.J. Abrams’ film reboot that hit the big screen in 2009.

Paramount Pictures has released a new video which delves deeper into the mystery of the Gorn, and also sheds some light on the game itself. Check it out after the break.

“When we started development on the game more than three years ago, one of the first decisions we had to make was: Who was the enemy?” said executive producer Brian Miller. “The Gorn immediately jumped to the top of the list. And now, as gamers and fans ourselves, we couldn’t be more excited to bring one of the most popular and iconic science fiction villains of all time to the video-game space.”

Embed code:

Star Trek the video game is currently set to release for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 23rd in the US, and on the 26th in Europe. Stay tuned for more updates.

Namco has released a new trailer called “Salvation” for the upcoming Star Trek game. There’s plenty of gameplay in there, plus a few hints dropped here and there as to what kind of story the game is going to follow.

It’s also a little hard not to notice how similar the game looks to the Mass Effect games. Not just in its third person gameplay and the way it is handling its set pieces, but even the art and the graphical palette seems very similar to BioWare’s influencial sci-fi trilogy. It’ll be interesting to see how the game turns out.

Have a look at the video, it’s been embedded above.

Star Trek releases on April 23rd for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Till then, you should probably stay tuned for continued coverage on everything Star Trek.

Also, it’s meant to premier before the new film next year as a promotional tactic.

That being said, we’ve seen far worse looking promo tactics than this. The game seems to employ a Dead Space style of play, along with the usual third person, cover-based mechanics.

Time will tell exactly how good those flashy lasers and stun guns are though.

Paramount Digital Entertainment has just announced on of the two games that they have not revealed yet. The game is a Stark Trek title that will be for the Xbox 360 and will be 2 player co-op, coming out in 2012. Players will take on the role of Kirk and Spock with the game debuting at E3 in a few days, which we will get the latest coverage on for you. Here is the official Press Release.

Los Angeles, CA – June 3, 2011 – Paramount Digital Entertainment confirmed today that Star Trek™ will be coming to the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in summer 2012. With an original story and unprecedented co-op experience, the game casts players as Kirk and Spock for the first time ever.

The game, which continues the adventure that director and producer J.J. Abrams envisioned with Star Trek (2009), boasts a stand alone story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy.

“Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced,” said Tom Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment. “Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience.”

Star Trek features an original story by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the new Star Trek films, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

The game is under development by Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, The Darkness II), working closely with Bad Robot, K/O Paper Products and Damon Lindelof and published by Paramount Digital Entertainment through a license with CBS Consumer Products. Star Trek will be available in stores 2012.
