The Switch 2 Edition of the hit farming sim features local split-screen co-op for up to four players and GameShare support.

While Stardew Valley has been available on the Nintendo Switch for quite some time, Nintendo and developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone have announced that the cozy farming and life sim is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition this Fall. The announcement was accompanied by a short trailer, which you can check out below.

While we didn’t get too many details about what kinds of upgrades we will get to see with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, the trailer does confirm that there will be 4-player local co-op (Switch 1 is limited to two players). You can play local wireless multiplayer with other Switch and Switch 2 owners as long as one person owns the game, thanks to GameShare.

On the performance side of things, we’re unlikely to see much in the way of improvements since Stardew Valley has always been a low-resolution title that aims for a retro feel thanks to its pixel art style. Higher frame rates in handheld mode due to the console’s refresh rate are likely, though.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, the eShop page for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is inaccessible, so how it will be priced remains to be seen. It is unlikely to be particularly expensive, however, since the original Switch version is priced at $14.99.

Earlier this month, Barone had confirmed that he had begun working on a new major update for Stardew Valley. The announcement was made during a recent Symphony of Seasons concert, though he later explained that there is no current release date.

Barone’s dedication to Stardew Valley has certainly been quite noteworthy, with him having spoken about how he would continue to work on the cozy game for 50 more years if he felt the need to.

“I do take in a lot of what the fans are saying,” said Barone in an interview, referring to getting fan feedback and new ideas. “I pay attention to what their thoughts are, what their criticisms are. And the players are very important to me. I mean, I will never forget that it’s because of the players that I’m in this position, that the game was able to be popular, that my dreams as a game developer have come true.”

In the same interview, Barone also spoke about the concept of a game having “too much content” and how this can lead to developers feeling overwhelmed when it came to working on things like bug fixes.

“I think a game can have too much content,” continued Barone. “And I ultimately want Stardew Valley to be the best game it can be. So if I feel like it’s starting to become kind of overwhelming with content to the point where it’s detrimental to the game’s entertainment factor, I would stop at that point. Another thing is, I do want to make more than one game in my life. Including the development time, I’ve been working on Stardew Valley for over 12 years now.”

Stardew Valley is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS.

While the farming/life sim continues to receive new content, there has been no word yet on the update's features or release date.

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has announced that yet more content is coming to farming life sim Stardew Valley. Announced during the recent Stardew Valley Symphony of Seasons concert, he confirmed update 1.7 to the world on social media.

It is worth noting that Barone hasn’t yet confirmed what kind of content we can expect from the update or a release date. “Okay, I revealed this at the concert last night and now the cat’s out of the bag, so I will confirm for everyone: There will be a Stardew Valley 1.7 update,” wrote Barone on social media platform X. “No release date, no estimate. But it’s happening”

The announcement for this update basically came out of nowhere since Barone had spoken about also working on Haunted Chocolatier and returning to it after Stardew Valley’s 1.6 update. However, it falls in line with his desire to continue supporting Stardew Valley for several years. Back in January, Barone went as far as to say that he would continue working on updates for the game for 50 more years.

He also spoke about the idea of a game potentially having “too much content”, and how this can start feeling overwhelming for him when it comes to working on things like bug fixes. Despite this, however, he still wants Stardew Valley to be “the best game it can be”.

Ever since its release back in 2016, Stardew Valley has been incredibly successful for Barone. Back in January, he confirmed that it has sold more than 41 million copies. Of the sales, PC was leading the pack by accounting for 26 million copies on its own, followed by the Nintendo Switch with 7.9 million copies.

Stardew Valley is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS.

The three critically acclaimed titles offer a mix of platforming fun, life-sim farming and reality-bending puzzles for subscribers.

Sony has unveiled its next slate of free titles coming to PlayStation Plus Essential, starting on September 2nd. These include Psychonauts 2 and Stardew Valley on PS4, and Viewfinder for PS4 and PS5. As usual, all three titles will also be available for Extra and Premium subscribers.

Released in 2021, Psychonauts 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic. Players once again control Raz as he finally joins the Psychonauts, but that glory is short-lived as he embarks on a mission to investigate and uncover a mole. New powers and levels, alongside revamped combat mechanics, help the experience stand out (and it looks fantastic). Head here for more details on Double Fine’s next game, Keeper.

Stardew Valley needs no introduction – it’s a farming/life sim inspired by Harvest Moon that’s sold tens of millions of copies. It’s received numerous updates thus far, expanding the end-game and adding several new features. As for Viewfinder, it’s a short puzzler where players use their camera to alter their perception of reality. While the premise is simple, it works surprisingly well and makes for a compelling adventure.

August’s PS Plus Essential titles will remain available for subscribers until September 1st, so claim them now.

In an interview, developer Eric Barone spoke about how much easier it is to add content to a game than to create a new game from scratch.

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, well known for incredibly popular farming sim game Stardew Valley, revealed that he might eventually make a sequel to the title. In an interview with TigerBelly, Barone mentioned that, with all of the content that he has worked to add into Stardew Valley, adding on to the original game feels like it would be a lot easier than making a fresh game from scratch.

“It’s all the systems — all the major systems — are already all done,” said Barone. “That’s the stuff that’s not fun to do. When I make an update [for Stardew Valley now], it’s like, you know, oh, throw in this, throw in that. Let’s add green rain — like, these random, whimsical ideas.”

“I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest,” he continued.

It is worth noting that, while Barone is also currently working on another game – Haunted Chocolatier – he has maintained that he will continue to add more content to Stardew Valley. In an interview from back in January, Barone even spoke about wanting to add things to the game even 50 years later.

“I do take in a lot of what the fans are saying,” said Barone in January. “I pay attention to what their thoughts are, what their criticisms are. And the players are very important to me. I mean, I will never forget that it’s because of the players that I’m in this position, that the game was able to be popular, that my dreams as a game developer have come true.”

Barone also spoke about the idea that a game could potentially have “too much content”. He did say that, if he were to ever start feeling overwhelmed with all of the things he plans on adding to Stardew Valley, he will ultimately stop further development. “Another thing is, I do want to make more than one game in my life. Including the development time, I’ve been working on Stardew Valley for over 12 years now,” he said.

However, he still hasn’t shown any signs of stopping work on Stardew Valley. He went as far as to even joke about releasing a fresh update for the game when he is 90 years old. “I don’t want to definitively say that the book is ever closed, because I think I will always have a desire to come back and maybe add a thing or two. You know, maybe even 50 years from now, I might add something.”

“I like creating things. I don’t think I’m ever going to retire. I think it would be funny to release an update when I’m, like, 90 years old — if I live that long. Let’s hope.”

Stardew Valley was originally released all the way back in 2016. As the title has crept up to its tenth anniversary, it has ultimately been released on just about every gaming platform out there. As of January this year, Barone had confirmed that more than 41 million copies had been sold so far.

When it comes to his other title, Barone had mentioned in the past that he was “taking a break” from the development of Haunted Chocolatier. However, he hasn’t revealed any more details about the title since then aside from saying that work on the game would resume after a major update for Stardew Valley had been completed.

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone spoke about development of new content for Stardew Valley, stating that he wants the game to be at its best.

Stardew Valley developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has revealed that he is open to working on the game for even longer, bringing in more content. Speaking to NPR, Barone spoke about being open to keep working on Stardew Valley for 50 more years.

Barone spoke about keeping an eye on criticisms of Stardew Valley that players might have, and how this often tends to inform his future plans for the game. With the belief that he owes players for his success, he refers to the continuous support of the game as his way of giving back to the community.

“I do take in a lot of what the fans are saying,” said Barone to NPR. “I pay attention to what their thoughts are, what their criticisms are. And the players are very important to me. I mean, I will never forget that it’s because of the players that I’m in this position, that the game was able to be popular, that my dreams as a game developer have come true.”

Barone also took time to discuss the idea that a game can have “too much content”, and how it can often get overwhelming for him to work on new features or bug fixes for the game. He also mentioned that he does ultimately want to make more than one game in his life.

“I think a game can have too much content,” continued Barone. “And I ultimately want Stardew Valley to be the best game it can be. So if I feel like it’s starting to become kind of overwhelmed with content to the point where it’s detrimental to the game’s entertainment factor, I would stop at that point.”

“Another thing is, I do want to make more than one game in my life. Including the development time, I’ve been working on Stardew Valley for over 12 years now.”

Barone capped things off by talking about how he will likely keep getting new ideas to add things, and potentially even add new content or bug fixes to Stardew Valley “50 years from now”.

Since its 2016 release, Stardew Valley has been immensely successful, with Barone revealing earlier this month that the farming sim had crossed 30 million in sales. He has also previously stated that he would never charge players for new content, tasking players with to “shame” him if he ever breaks the oath.

Currently, Barone is working on a new title, Haunted Chocolatier, which doesn’t yet have a release date. Stardew Valley, on the other hand, got a major update last year.

ConcernedApe's farming life sim/RPG has sold more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million copies on Nintendo Switch in its lifetime.

After reaching 30 million sales in February 2024, ConcernedApe’s Stardew Valley closed the year with a massive new milestone. As of December, it’s sold over 41 million units, per Barone in a new press release. PC leads the pack with over 26 million sales, followed by Nintendo Switch with 7.9 million.

Stardew Valley had an eventful year with Update 1.6, adding eight-player multiplayer, festivals, new end-game content, balance changes, a new farm type, and more. Another patch would add 40 new layouts for mines alongside additional fairy styles, mystery boxes, and fish frenzies. The free updates follow Barone’s pledge for free post-launch support.

His next project, Haunted Chocolatier, is currently on hold while the developer focused on Stardew Valley (despite the promise to resume after Update 1.6). Whether this means more new content for the latter remains to be seen.

Stardew Valley is available on iOS, Android, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Once a principal staple of games some twenty plus years ago, the ability to play in local, couch co-op nowadays more often seems a sought-after feature than something to be expected. There’s an unrivalled joy in playing together in the same room as others; something which online multi-player cannot replicate. Couch co-op is still a thing though; whilst some developers add local co-op respectively via updates, some of the best available weave the requirement to work diligently together into the very fabric of the game’s design.

"Screencap this and shame me if I ever violate this oath," says Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone after an update on ports of the latest patch.

As one of the most successful indie titles of all time, Stardew Valley also has a reputation for excellent post-launch support. The last patch, a follow-up to the extensive update 1.6, added 40 new mine layouts, new hairstyles and more for free.

Expect this trend to continue as Creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has sworn “on the honor of my family name” that updates or “DLC” will never cost money. “I will never charge money for a DLC or update for as long as I live. Screencap this and shame me if I ever violate this oath.”

While Barone didn’t specify if that includes his next title, Haunted Chocolatier, it’s more than likely. In the meantime, he’s working on ports of Stardew Valley’s update 1.6 after promising it would be released for consoles and mobile “as soon as possible” in April. Barone assured players that he’s “personally been working” on the mobile port’s update and will announce any “meaningful news” when it happens.

Stardew Valley is available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, Xbox Series X/S and Android. It’s sold over 30 million copies as of February 2024 and received extensive acclaim from critics. Stay tuned for more details on update 1.6’s launch for other platforms in the meantime.

Casual-friendly games with an enthusiast edge.

Every discipline and hobby has a gateway attraction that gently eases newcomers into the fold while urging them deeper inside. Video games have only gotten more diverse and user-friendly as the years go on, so the number of casual games casts a wide net today. As such, we’re focusing on games that are casual-friendly, yet also dip their toes into enthusiast mechanics or concepts. So, without further ado, here’s our list of 15 single-player games that turned non-gamers into gamers.

The Stanley Parable

The broad appeal of The Stanley Parable is easy to understand; it lacks a complex control scheme and doesn’t ask for long gaming sessions, and the experimental narrative sandbox is instantly gripping. You can casually sit down for 10 minutes at a time going through different routes as you come up with different ways to annoy the narrator. This narrative choose-your-own-adventure experience breaks the fourth wall many times, constantly poking fun at the illusion of choice in narrative-driven video games. Like others on this list, The Stanley Parable can be categorized as a visual novel just as much as it can a video game, though it smartly pokes at what it means to be a video game through its unique first-person interactivity.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

The first Hellblade was pretty groundbreaking when it came out in 2017. Sure, the combat wasn’t amazing, and the level design left something to be desired, but the immersive quality of the main character’s audio-visual hallucinations was new and interesting. Hellblade helped push the interactive medium by putting players into the mind of someone suffering from Psychosis. The team wanted a game that let players experience the mental illness itself, and not just the reactions of characters experiencing it. This was expressed by voices in Senua’s head rather than just text on a screen. Hellblade was played by many outside the gaming space who wanted to experience something new and different, and that included nurses and doctors wanting to understand Psychosis as well as casual players looking for a different kind of narrative experience.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Any Animal Crossing game could earn a spot on this list, but New Horizons gets an edge up due to being on the Switch and selling a whopping 45 million. Animal Crossing is pretty much the ultimate cozy lifestyle sim, one that doesn’t demand too much time to thoroughly enjoy. The gameplay philosophy of taking on little bite-sized tasks every day can apply to real life, and it’s one of the reasons people from all walks of life love it. The portable on-the-go functionality of the Nintendo Switch adds to the mass appeal of Animal Crossing: New Horizons further, giving otherwise-dull vacations and business trips added fun as players meet new villagers and find ways to pay off Tom Nook’s loan.

The Witness

Braid was one of the first indie games to really go viral back in the late 2000s, and we had to wait quite a long while for Jonathan Blow’s next game. 8 years later, The Witness arrived and challenged what a puzzle video game could be. The Witness is about as pure a puzzle game as you can get. There’s no music, no plot, and no gameplay to speak of other than walking and solving the creative grid-based line-connecting puzzles. Puzzle aficionados can feel right at home with The Witness’s escalating complexity without worrying about control scheme worries or typical multimedia layers like sound and cinematics getting in the way. The only knock against it is that it’s still not available on Android, and that someone hasn’t converted its puzzles into book form yet.

Detroit: Become Human

With 85 possible endings and a myriad of different paths, Detroit: Become Human is the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure game. The plot revolves around a dystopian sci-fi Detroit being overrun by android sentience, but the developer’s style is what really makes the game unique. Also, it’s got the best branching choice flow chart in a game to date. Detroit: Become Human is a real delight to watch and play, making it an ideal streamer game for gamers and non-gamers alike.

Undertale

It’s difficult to pin down how or what exactly got this RPG indie sensation so popular. Undertale employs a 2D aesthetic and despite its niche and retro inspirations, Undertale attracted many new gamers into the fold, resulting in a surge of people going back to play the older classics out of curiosity and passion for the style. The story isn’t your typical grandiose journey, and the gameplay merges genres like bullet hells into its battle system, making for a unique and fresh experience that has sparked an interest in such genres to newcomers.

Super Mario Odyssey

Being one of the most popular and highly rated Mario games to date with 27 million in sales is no small feat. It’s true that pretty much every mainline Mario game has wide appeal and moves consoles, but Super Mario Odyssey had a trick up its sleeve, or should I say, a hat? The transforming Cappy hat, swimsuit Mario, and Jump Up Superstar big band song instantly entered meme status, capturing a wide audience as a result. And we’re thankful the marketing caught on because Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most fun and well-designed 3D platformers of all time.

Celeste

Despite being a punishing platformer, Celeste has some of the most user-friendly difficulty options in the genre. The options allow you to play how you want with the amount of air dashes, stamina, and invincibility available as a toggle. Also, the game is just so quick to jump in and out of thanks to the snappy respawn and checkpoints for every room. Beyond the flexible gameplay, the story is broadly appealing with the main character’s down-to-earth battles with anxiety, all told through a supernatural mountain climb.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley ticks all the casual boxes and does it with a surprising amount of depth. You can farm crops and stake your place in the valley at a leisurely pace, or you can work toward seeing the post-game content with a successful farm and wife. Stardew Valley has a lot of management sim meat on its bones despite its casual appearance, leading players to try out more involved games lacking the kind of convenience features this game has.

Firewatch

Firewatch is another one on this list that’s perhaps just as enjoyable to watch as it is to play. The dialogue between the two fire dispatchers, Henry and Delilah, really carries this game with the charm and witty banter. It’s also got a mystery element woven through the narrative as you’re left questioning if Delilah is well-intentioned, working as a spy, going nuts, or all of the above. The down-to-earth nature of its premise and laid-back gameplay help give Firewatch a broad appeal.

Journey

Everyone reading this already knows about Journey, so I’ll spare the summary. Journey is one of those games that gets instantly recommended to non-players, and for good reason. It’s impossible to fail at, has an attractive audio-visual core, and provides an interactive experience you can’t get elsewhere. The lack of UI cluttering the screen eases new players to dive in without hesitation. And who doesn’t like sand surfing? It’s just so easy to pop into a session without needing to use your brain and tense up your gaming reflexes. Journey would go on to be a true journey into the wide world of video games for many newcomers to the hobby.

Portal

Originally developed as a school project titled Narbacular Drop, Portal went on to inspire independent games as a concept. The inventive portal tool gets our brains to think outside the box as we solve Glados’ test chambers. The narrative brims with inventiveness as the test subject, Chell, seeks to break free of the testing and find a new path forward. Portal remains one of the most creative and unique games ever created. It’s one of those games that breaks the boundary of the entertainment box it’s in, compelling gamers and non-gamers alike to experience its quirky and unpredictable narrative. Even with first-person 3D controls, non-gamers couldn’t help but experience such a novel, mind-bending game.

Inside

It’s astonishing how simple and understated the gameplay and aesthetic of Inside is, yet it’s still hailed as one of the most unique gaming experiences. Like Limbo before it, the intro of Inside has you simply walking forward without any exposition or explanation. You’re left to wander and figure things out through exploration and carefully constructed environments. If the dark atmosphere wasn’t enough, there’s also some horror sprinkled in with little jump scares and tense moments that help push Inside further into the annals of casual game stardom.

The Last of Us: Part 1

The Last of Us manages to hit that sweet spot appealing to those outside the gaming sphere while still being challenging and ‘video-gamey’ in its own right. Now that The Last of Us TV show is out, non-gamers are flocking to the remake of the first game more than ever. The game’s setting ticks all the boxes of a modern series-seller: zombies, post-apocalypse, survival, father-daughter bonding, drama. The Last of Us: Part 1 also happens to punch us right in the gut with one of the most impactful openers in any form of media, let alone video game. It’s easy to see why The Last of Us got its own TV series and a remakes after the original’s release in 2013.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

We all knew The Legend of Zelda could sell systems and rise to the top of Metacritic ratings, but who could’ve predicted Breath of the Wild’s tremendous success? When Breath of the Wild first came out, it was often called the best game of all time. Taking Zelda fully open world revitalized the genre and helped draw in new players who wanted to explore at their own pace. The open exploration is accompanied by flexible abilities like Magnet and Stasis, which allow for a wide range of creative solutions to puzzles and ways to play with items, enemies, and the environment around you. Sure, the weapons break way too fast in Breath of the Wild, but many players could overlook that due to the vast world and limitless ways to play the game. Many fans of Breath of the Wild would go on to try out other games afterward, revitalizing the genre with a new set of admirers.

These massive timesinks will sink their claws right into you and then never let go.

A game that backs up its wealth of content with an addictive, well thought out gameplay loop can be a dangerous prospect, especially if you have a life and plan on living it, because if a game like that gets its claws into you, there’s a good chance that it isn’t going to let go for potentially hundreds upon hundreds of hours. This is a feature dedicated to such games. Given just how many games we could have picked, this obviously isn’t a comprehensive list by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, here are some games that we have clocked an obscene amount of hours into in relatively recent years.

MONSTER HUNTER WORLD

We could have gone with any one of the Monster Hunter games, but are going with World for obvious reasons. Up to this point, it’s the best iteration of the series’ excellent formula. Large and seamless maps, an impressive roster of incredibly designed monsters that are as magnificent to behold as they’re a joy to fight, and an insanely addictive gameplay loop revolving around killing progressively stronger monsters so you can use their part to make progressively stronger gear, which will help you kill progressively stronger monsters, and on and on and on. Especially with its Iceborne expansion included, this is a game that can keep you occupied for a startling amount of time.
