A Super Mario Bros. 3 player has very recently discovered an out-of-bounds glitch that allows the player to swap to Luigi.

Super Mario Bros. 3 released in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and as one would expect from a game with the mustachioed plumber on the box, it was and still stands tall as one hell of a game. Interestingly enough, it’s chock-full of secrets, one of which has been discovered very recently.

Twitter user @BoundaryBreak has used an out-of-bounds glitch that throws players into a minigame stage from Mario Bros. where you have to collect coins. Upon winning the game, the player character will swap over to Luigi, who will then appear on the mini-map. Many have pointed out that the discovery of this stage has been made before, although this time, it appears in a completely different section of the map.

It’s certainly fascinating that even a game as old and as loved as Super Mario Bros. 3 has undiscovered glitches that can be used to change key elements of the experience.

In related news, Masayuki Uemura, creator of NES and SNES, recently passed away, leaving a long-standing legacy of excellent hardware behind him- read more on that through here.

Being eaten alive sucks but it's certainly a living for these foes.

Of the many ways, getting eaten or swallowed alive is probably one of the worst (not that we’d know). Unfortunately, there are plenty of enemies in video games that can pull this off. While many interesting gameplay dynamics open up, such as fighting your way out from the inside or trying to avoid being eaten, other times it’s just one agonizing death on top of the rest. Let’s take a look at 15 video game enemies with mouths so big they can literally swallow you.

Choking Weed – Gradius 3

It’s bad enough that you have to shoot past a weed-infested level with killer plants extending from the floor and ceiling to hit you. But then you come across Choking Weed, whose Venus Flytrap-style mouth opens up to actually suck you in. Fortunately, the rate at which its jaws close is slow enough to evade. Just be careful when it suddenly decides to dip forward.

Water, water everywhere and all the annoyances to be had. Check out the most agonizing water levels in games.

Water levels. You know them. You’ve probably grown up with them. All in all, they’re fairly wretched. Not all water levels are badly designed but by virtue of their gimmick, they can be incredibly frustrating to play through. Let’s take a look at 15 terrible water levels in video games that’ll make you question life itself. Probably.

Orange Ocean – Kirby Super Star

Kirby Super Star is easily one of the best games made. No question. But Orange Ocean, a level in Revenge of Meta Knight, is kind of annoying. It starts off with Kirby underwater and the game auto-scrolls, which is an immediate tilter. Not only is Kirby slower and unable to use most abilities but you also have to dodge cannon fire. Just make sure you don’t die to the auto-scrolling (because obviously there’s a section where that can happen).

While the Virtual Console on Nintendo Switch remains a pipedream for now, Nintendo fans will still at the very least be able to play classic NES games for absolutely free as part of the perks of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. These games will also be modified to be online enabled, which at least, is nifty.

The headline game for the first batch of these titles (which is over 20 games) will be Super Mario Bros. 3, the classic NES platformer that many believe is the best Mario game to this day. Now, Nintendo has finally shared an image of the game running on the Switch- which is also the first official look we have had of a retro game running on the new hybrid system (something that many people have been demanding for a while now). It… looks like Super Mario Bros. 3. On a Switch. I don’t know what you expected, to be honest.

That's pretty cool.

The Gameboy Advance port of the NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Advance 4, launched with support for Nintendo’s eReader peripheral. You may not remember what the eReader was, particularly if you lived in Europe at the time, but it let you scan coded cards, and unlock new levels and items inside games- like a very early concept of DLC or Amiibos (or both).

These eReader levels are usually the first thing to get an axe whenever the game is re-released- mostly because they aren’t accessible without an eReader, and it would be a lot of trouble to make them unlockable in another way. But in the Japanese Virtual Console release of Super Mario Bros. Advance 4, these levels will in fact be available- they will be made accessible without the eReader, though the exact specifics are not yet known.

Also what is unknown for now is whether Super Mario Advance 4 will be launching for Virtual Console in the west at all, and if it does, whether those extra levels will be included. But we’ll keep you posted.

Nintendo of America updates its website to include the NES classic.

Nintendo of America had added Super Mario Bros. 3 to its list of Virtual Console release for the Nintendo eShop. It will be available for the 3DS and Wii U, although no specific release date or formal announcement has been provided.

For those who don’t know, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a platformer from the NES era but one that set that standard for generations of Mario games to follow. The ability to choose your own route and tackle stages, collecting and use different items, the Tanooki suit, hidden stages and much more were all introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Considering that the game has released for a number of platforms, notably on handhelds such as the Game Boy Advance, it will be interesting to see what the eShop version has in store. For those who’ve already experienced the game, would you be willing to shell out a few more bucks to play it again? Let us know in the comments below.

So what was Super Mario Bros. 3 like in Japan?

It’s a known fact that some entertainment, when being translated from one country to another, tend to change a few things. Heck, the same thing applies for anime, which tried to rationalize the culture appearing on screen into an American subtext or just change it completely (unlike now, where the material is kept mostly the same as the original).

But Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES is an excellent example of the little things and how Nintendo slightly modified the game, in both big and small ways, when they released it in the United States. A YouTube user named MasterofHyrule decided to illustrate these many differences and put up a helpful side-by-side video to showcase them. Check it out above.

Some things that are minor include transition to worlds from the title screen, while major changes include a boat warping glitch that allowed one to freely traverse the terrain warped to and suits like the Tanooki outfit flying off when hit rather then disappearing.
