Developed by ArtePiazza (who also worked on various Dragon Quest titles), Super Mario RPG offers remade visuals and cutscenes. Exploration is mostly the same, with returning composer Yoko Shimomura providing some new orchestral arrangements for the music, though the classic soundtrack is still available.

As for the combat, several new mechanics, like damaging several opponents with perfectly timed strikes and the Triple Move, are available. There are also new features like the Gallery for viewing enemies and an option to face more challenging versions of bosses in the post-game. Head here for more details.

Fans of Mario RPGs can also look forward to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which launches next year for Nintendo Switch. However, it will seemingly run in 30 frames per second.

Based on Square’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the remake offers gorgeous, fully 3D visuals and revamped cutscenes. It also has several new combat features, like perfectly timed hits damaging all enemies, a new Triple Move with all three party members, and much more. There are also powered-up versions of story bosses to fight in the post-game.

Composer Yoko Shimomura’s contemporary arrangements are pretty great, though – head here for a comparison of the new tracks versus the old. It also called the title a “timeless masterpiece” that would make everyone happy while having a “nostalgic feel.” The Chains and new three-player team-up attacks add “new tactics” and “a certain sense of tension,” but overall, the game is easier to play. It’s not too big, and players could expect a “moderate level of difficulty.”

The story sees a mysterious entity called Exor embedding itself into Bowser’s Castle, destroying the Star Road en route. Mario must team up with various allies, from Bowser and Princess Peach to newcomers Mallow and Geno, to gather the seven Star Pieces and save the world. Along with revamped visuals, the remake features rearranged orchestral tracks, new combat mechanics like the Triple Move, and more.

There are also some extra features like rematching against tougher versions of bosses, switching to the classic SNES soundtrack and even a gallery to view all enemies. However, fans can still listen to the classic SNES soundtrack. A new video on Twitter courtesy of Nintendo UK compares the two, with Bandit’s Way and Forest Maze showcased. The difference is noticeable, with the rearranged tracks having a distinct orchestra while staying true to the original melodies.

Of course, you can swap between them and choose the rendition that suits your taste. All songs will also be available in the Sound Player to listen to. As with the original release, timing button presses let you block damage and add damage to certain moves. However, if you time attacks in the remake, you can simultaneously damage all enemies. Successfully executing action commands will also fill a gauge to unleash a triple move with party members on the field.

These triple moves changed based on those present on the field, so some experimentation is encouraged. Finally, you can rematch against certain bosses. Be careful, as they’ve seen some significant enhancements. Also, it seems that Culex returns, as the signature door in Monstro Town is showcased. The screenshots, uploaded to the official Nintendo Japan website, showcase a range of gameplay activities that players will be indulging in. Chief among them is combat, of course, while outside of combat, players will also be able to dive into a variety of minigames, many of which are also shown- from shooting through the air in a minecart to riding on Yoshi’s back to jumping across barrels floating in a river. Super Mario RPG Remake is set to launch for the Nintendo Switch on Nintendo 17. Though the original game’s co-director Chihiro Fujioka isn’t involved with the remake, original composer Yoko Shimomura will be serving on the project in the same capacity.

One who isn’t involved with the remake is Chihiro Fujioka, who do-directed Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Responding to a question on Twitter, Fujioka – who also worked on several Mario and Luigi titles – revealed that he is “not involved in the remake”. Fujioka said he was “very surprised” by the announcement, indicating he may not have known about the remake’s development prior to its announcement, but added that he was “pleased” with the reveal and was looking forward to the game’s launch later this year.

Someone who was involved with the original game who will be returning for the remake is composer Yoko Shimomura, who recently confirmed that she will be serving in the same role for the upcoming game.

Based on what was shown in its trailer, it looks like the remake is going to faithfully recreate the beloved SNES classic while also significantly updating its visuals. And it seems that’s not the only way it’ll stay true to the game it’s attempting to modernize.

Yoko Shimomura, the acclaimed composer who composed the soundtrack of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars back in the day, will be returning in the same capacity for the remake. She confirmed the news in a Twitter post published shortly after the remake was officially announced.

“I am in charge of the music for the remake version of Super Mario RPG announced at the Nintendo Direct today,” Shimomura wrote. “I put all my heart into arranging all the songs, hoping that both the fans of the original and those playing for the first time can enjoy it! Stay tuned for more news.”

On top of the RPG remake, Nintendo also announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder at its recent Direct, a new mainline 2D sidescrolling Mario game. Meanwhile, the company also announced a new game starring Princess Peach as the main character, and a Switch remaster of 3DS title Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.

First developed by Squaresoft, Super Mario RPG sees Mario and friends battling against a new foe named Smithy. They traverse the world in search of the Seven Stars, and Mario gains several unique allies, from the marshmallow-esque Mallow to the living doll Geno. Even Princess Peach and Bowser join the fun after many hijinks.

While the timing-based battle system appears intact, Super Mario RPG Remake features completely redone visuals and rearranged tracks.
