These platformers will push your skills to the limit.

Too much of a challenge in a game can put many people off, but for many, that’s something that can elevate an experience to completely new heights. There are, of course, a variety of games from multiple developers and across different genres that cater to that particular audience, and one genre in particular where we get that quite often is platformers. From 2D sidescrollers to 3D experiences, this is a genre where those looking for a game that will put up a fight have plenty of options to dive into. Here, we’re going to talk about a few games in that group that stand out more than most others.

CELESTE

That Celeste, a small-budget indie game made by a tiny team, is unequivocally one of the best platformers we’ve played in years absolutely cannot be taken for granted. That, of course, is down to the fact that it works within its limitations to deliver something so unique and well-made. Particularly on the platforming front, it’s a game that can be gruelingly difficult. Even if you’re sticking to the critical path, grappling with Celeste’s demanding platforming trials can be quite the task, though it’s the optional content that really provides the truly difficult challenges. Thankfully, thanks to the game’s pixel perfect platforming and incredible level design, that rarely ever feels overbearing.

The platformers will be out on the new consoles by late January or early February.

Team Meat recently released their long-in-development sequel to Super Meat Boy for Nintendo Switch and PC, but there’s still more launch milestones to look forward to for Super Meat Boy Forever. The platformer is also due out on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S soon, and as you’d expect, the more powerful hardware of the consoles will also lead to some nifty boosts.

Speaking recently with GamingBolt in a recent interview, Super Meat Boy Forever designer and the series’ co-creator Tommy Refenes said that the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s SSD will allow the game to insta-load on those consoles, which is a step up from the game’s already low load times.

“Our load times are already really low, even on Nintendo Switch so I feel like the PS5/Series X will just insta-load like it does on my PC with NVMe SSD drives,” Refenes said.

Refenes also confirmed that the game will run at upto 4K and 60 FPS on the new consoles. When asked about an estimated launch date, he confirmed that it’ll be out on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S by late January or early February.

Super Meat Boy Forever is currently available on PC and Nintendo Switch. In addition to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, it is also slated to release for PS4, Xbox One, iOS, and Android. Our full interview with Refenes will be live soon, so stay tuned for that.

These games can take some time to master but are absolutely worth it in the end.

Not every game is meant for unwinding. Or perhaps more accurately, there are some games that present a fairly high barrier to their inherent fun. Is the struggle rewarding, especially with all the frustration those initial few hours bring? Depending on the game you play, it can be so let’s take a look at 15 games which are ultimately worth the long hours of suffering.

Bloodborne

Veterans of From Software’s Dark Souls series were in for something different with Bloodborne. Though combat was mechanically similar, it was faster with the ability to side-step along with dodge-roll. Shields were pretty non-essential, Visceral attacks were awesome and sometimes, attacking foes to regenerate lost health was the best option. For those who’ve never played a From Software game, Bloodborne takes time to properly get a hold of (especially the bosses) but it delivers a rich story, fully-realized world and excellent combat.

These games are so well balanced that adding a difficulty setting may very well spoil the experience.

You run home on the launch day of a brand new game, thrilled that the launch has finally come. Pop the disk into your system and settle in for a nice long session. But before any of that, there’s a lot of the time you have a choice to make. What’s your difficulty setting? While somewhat accepted today, the very idea of the player selecting their own difficulty is kind of strange, isn’t it? Before playing even a little bit of the game, you’re asking the player to make a major decision that could impact their entire experience. The problems with difficulty modes are numerous, but there’s a growing number of titles who have found creative ways around this, which we’re here to discuss today. Make sure to share your favourites in the comments below!

Super Meat Boy

As an early indy hit, Super Meat Boy had to earn all of the praise it got to show that smaller teams could be worth just as much attention. Super Meat Boy then had a lot of confidence in the mechanics surrounding the super tight platforming gameplay to not offer players a way to just cruise to the credits. Losing the idea of lives lives and allowing the player to restart the small stages roughly 12 times per second until the proverbial brick wall was beaten down allowed many to find their groove and not really even notice death.

These bosses didn't get our heart pounding quite as much as their comrades.

The masochists among us gamers go to games looking for something to push us a bit, challenge what we’ve learned and figured out about a game’s mechanics and the feeling that we get after conquering that tough boss is, well simply indescribable. Many series from Mega Man to Dark Souls have made their name on difficulty, but every once in awhile, even those games meant to be challenging have some cracks in their armour where they kind of just let us down. Here’s some of those times, but please don’t forget to share your own easy bosses in hard games in the comments below as well.

The Wall – Contra (1987)

Contra is a great game, given two Rambo knock offs a great excuse to shoot their way through a jungle infested by evil solders, turrets and exploding bridges. This challenge of dexterity must finish off in a suitable boss battle right? Well, how about you stand a safe distance away and shoot at a wall for a second.

Pour one out for all the Xbox One controllers lost to these 15 games.

There’s so much choice out there for a gamer these days, it’s hard to know where to go for the best experiences for what you like in particular. Some of us love those grand stories and movie productions that other companies get, but there’s those enthusiasts among us who like a game to bend us, and even break us from time to time, not to mention a few controllers. If you’re that type of gamer, let us tell you why Xbox One is your One place to play. Did we forget any great ones? Let us know in the comments.

N++

Xbox One might not be anyone’s first thought when they want a hardcore platform game, but there’s a surprising amount to be found. N++ is Metanet’s follow up to XBLA darling N+ and though it originally launched as a PS4 and PC title, the return to the Xbox Platform has the minimalistic ninja runner as gloriously, and infuriatingly hard, as it ever was.

Yet another indie developer is finding some strong success on Nintendo's platform.

Super Meat Boy originally launched in 2010 and proved to be a catalyst for the rise of indie games in the console space. Almost eight years later, the original is now available for Nintendo Switch and according to the developer, it’s sales are pretty darn good.

Team Meat revealed on Twitter that first day sales for the Switch version are “shockingly close” to initial Xbox 360 sales. The developer expressed further shock in a follow-up tweet. With Super Meat Boy Forever also heading to the hybrid console, the success of the original is good news indeed.

Indie titles have been selling incredibly well on the Switch with Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Forma.8 reporting higher sales than on other platforms. To its credit, the Nintendo Switch itself has been also been performing well, selling the highest number of units for the United States in December according to Aaron Greenberg via NPD Group data.

The Switch continues to get great indie game support.

The Nintendo Switch continues its stellar run of independent game support, with two great, acclaimed indie games having been confirmed for Nintendo’s new hybrid system recently. The first is the excellent Super Meat Boy, one of the most acclaimed platformers of all time, which has finally been officially confirmed for a Switch release. The Switch version doesn’t have a release date yet, but hopefully it should be soon. The developers also hinted on Twitter that it may get a retail release.

Meanwhile, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, another indie hit platformer, has also been confirmed for a Nintendo Switch release. This game, too, was confirmed on Twitter. Mutant Mudds was first released on the Nintendo 3DS all the way back in 2011- so this marks a homecoming of sorts for the game. As with Super Meat Boy, no final release date has been confirmed for Mutant Mudds Deluxe yet.

Hopefully, the Switch continues receiving this kind of stellar support from independent game developers- it truly is the best machine to play those games on.

Prepare for game cartridges, tumours and difficult platforming.

Super Meat Boy creator Edmund McMillen along with Tyler Glaiel has finally released his newest difficult platformer The End is Nigh. You can pick up the 2D title from Steam and look forward to a Nintendo Switch release later.

Taking place in a future, The End is Nigh focuses on Ash, a creature who must battle against other decaying creatures while collecting game cartridges (all fully playable) and tumour pieces. The end goal is “to simply make a friend out of pieces of people [Ash] finds along his journey.” Which sounds pretty darn grim but considering McMillen also created The Binding of Isaac, this seems par for the course.

With over 600 levels between more than 12 chapters, numerous endings and Achievements and other extras, The End is Nigh seems to be doing well with Super Meat Boy fans in terms of challenge. What are your thoughts on the game thus far? Let us know in the comments.

Broken Age, Super Meat Boy and more are available for PS Plus subscribers.

The PlayStation Network’s Instant Game Collection has been updated with the free games for October 2015, which includes titles like Super Meat Boy, Broken Age, Unmechanical: Extended, Chariot, Kung Fu Rabbit and KickBeat. These titles are free to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Broken Age and Super Meat Boy are available for both PS4 and PS Vita thanks to Cross Buy support while Unmechanical: Extended, Kickbeat and Kung Fu Rabbit are supported on the PS4 and PS3. Chariot is only available for PS3 players it seems.

The PS Plus Edition of DriveClub, which was free, has been removed this week after its introduction in June. It’s likely that it could return but one would think that Sony would keep it on PSN for a much longer period of time, especially given how long it’s been delayed.

What are your thoughts on this month’s Instant Game Collection for PS Plus? Let us know in the comments below.
