White Owls Inc.’s newest game The Missing, helmed by Hidetaka “Swery65” Suehiro of Deadly Premonition fame, is out now for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The grisly mystery focuses on J.J. as she navigates Memoria Island to locate her best friend, who’s gone missing.

This isn’t your typical side-scrolling puzzle platformer though. To make any progress, J.J. has to suffer all manner of harm, from dismemberment and immolation to electrocution and being crushed. Due to the island’s mysterious powers, J.J. can seemingly revive herself an infinite number of times. Why exactly is all of this happening? Where did her friend go?

You’ll have to actually play The Missing to find out. Published by Arc System Works, The Missing features a gorgeous art-style to offset the macabre premise. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart regardless, but if yet another unorthodox adventure from the oddball mind of Suehiro interests you, check it out today.

The mind behind classic games like Deadly Premonition and D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, Hidetaka “SWERY65” Suehiro is returning with a brand new game, The Missing. The game is being developed by his White Owls studio and published by Arc System Works.

Arc System Works announced the collaboration through a press release, and while there’s really next to nothing known about the game so far, beyond a 2018 launch, we do know from a short video from SWERY himself that Arc System Works is letting him have full creative freedom, so we should see something really, well, SWERY.

The video, which you can check out just below, shows SWERY talking about the game without really saying much of anything at all. He is rather confident that the game will surprise everybody and really “blow our minds”. Given his previous works, it very easily could. We have no idea what platforms The Missing will launch on, or really even what it is, but stick to Gamingbolt for more information as it comes.

Of the many odd titles revealed in the past few months – and there have been many – Swery65’s Xbox One exclusive D4, which stands for “Dark Dreams Don’t Die”, is perhaps the most intriguing. That’s because the man is known for Deadly Premonition, one of the trippier games in recent memory.

Speaking to Xbox Wire, Swery65 stated that the game is “centered around the idea of ’empathy.’ The game mechanics have been built around the idea of ‘replicating senses.’ Both its hard specs and the Kinect control device make the Xbox One the best possible way to express these two pillars that support our game.

“The new Kinect can detect palm shape, it can capture players’ posture when they’re sitting, and it allows for natural voice input. By using these attributes effectively, I believe that we can succeed at ‘replicating senses.’ D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is not a game about mimicking poses and gestures that appear on the screen. It’s a game that replicates senses through allowing players to interact the way they want using Kinect, and I think that makes it very unique.

“We think of Kinect as an input device no different than a mouse or a controller. We’ve coded the process of replicating actions on the screen so that players can use Kinect to do it all.”

As of now the game has no launch date, but is expected to release next year for Xbox One.

Gesture based QTEs for Kinect. And a dollop of the bizarre we reckon.

One of the few exclusives we saw that actually managed to catch our attention (we kid, we kid) was D4. The game is touted as an “episodic murder mystery” and is developed by Swery65. This is the developer of Deadly Premonition, one of the few timed exclusives for the Xbox 360. A trailer was also released for the same, which you can view above.

Deadly Premonition was regarded, when it was still exclusive to Microsoft’s console, as one of those “so bad it’s good” games who’s immense cheese and shockingly effective dynamics actually resulted in a rip-roaring good time.

D4 appears to do something a bit different, as we follow a detective who must solve his wife’s murder and prevent it from happening by diving back in time.

Not much is showcased except the ability to use Kinect to perform different Quick Time Events using gestures. Hopefully the final result is a lot less complicated than it sounds. See how it goes down above and let us know in the comments if it floats your boat.

Update: Screenshots added.
