Meanwhile, GTA 5 refuses to die and sees yet another surge in sales.

UKIE/GfK Chart-Track has released the charts for boxed video game software sales in the UK for the week ending March 16, and unsurprisingly, The Division 2 has debuted in pole position. What’s interesting, though, is that in spite of topping sales charts, the looter shooter has seen disappointing sales nonetheless, managing only 20 per cent as much sales as the first The Division did when it came out in 2016 (via GamesIndustry).

There is the fact, as is the case every week, that these sales only account for physical sales, which is something that has seen retail sales for several titles drop down in recent years, from FIFA 19 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 to Battlefield 5, Anthem, and many others. In 2017, Destiny 2 also saw a drop in physical sales as compared to its predecessor. Total sales for The Division 2, accounting for digital distribution as well might present a prettier picture for Ubisoft. 60 per cent of the looter shooter’s sales came through PS4 copies.

Meanwhile, Devil May Cry 5, which debuted on top of the charts last week, has fallen down to sixth place, with Anthem falling out of the top 10 and into eleventh place. One Piece: World Seeker was another new release this week, and charted at 26th position. Meanwhile, the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA 19 continued to perform strongly, landing at 2nd and 4th places respectively. Grand Theft Auto 5, nearly six years old at this point, saw a surge in sales, jumping from tenth place to third, with a remarkable 121 per cent week-on-week improvement.

Equally fun and frustrating.

The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is the video game equivalent of grocery store sushi. It’s not ideal or even made well, but it somehow manages to hit the spot anyways. This is mostly due to the ability of Lego games to engage the collector in all of us. Throughout the long, exhaustive library of games in the overarching franchise, the primary goal has always been to collect characters, bits, bricks, items, and more. And if that’s what you’re seeking, you’re going to get it here in spades.

"The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is the video game equivalent of grocery store sushi. It’s not ideal or even made well, but it somehow manages to hit the spot anyways."

The Lego Movie 2 Videogame has adopted some new ways to dole out these collectible characters and items through in-game lootboxes called “relics”, but even they’re collected in treasure chests lying about the levels, thankfully avoiding any microtransactions. Even better, any duplicate items are turned to shards to help you purchase more boxes. While I don’t think randomized loot is ever a particularly fun mechanic, I still appreciate that I never felt like I was being taken advantage of by the system.

Essentially everything in the game can be summed up as such: Go here, collect these, build this, collect more. It should be downright infuriatingly monotonous, but it somehow manages to just feel game-y in an enjoyable way. One of the ways the game avoids that monotony and frustration is by consistently offering new and inventive ways to challenge the mind. I enjoyed looking at a quick roadblock in my progress and thinking through my options. Even when it was blatantly obvious, working it out and subsequently watching the outcome of my choices was always a treat.

While it’s clearly aimed at a younger crowd, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few scattered moments where trying to figure out what I needed to build to beat a boss or overcome a short puzzle took me a minute or two. This was often enjoyable, but sometimes what I needed to interact with would be so ambiguous that it actually felt like a shortcoming on behalf of the game than my own mental acuity. One moment the game holds your hand to a maddening degree, and then the next you’re expected to know exactly what to build at some random, unremarkable location during an active boss battle.

"Essentially everything in the game can be summed up as such: Go here, collect these, build this, collect more. It should be downright infuriatingly monotonous, but it somehow manages to just feel game-y in an enjoyable way."

The combat stands out as one of The Lego Movie 2’s worst aspects. As a matter of fact, in a title that handles exploration, collecting, and basic puzzle solving quite well, the infrequent addition of combat feels wholly unnecessary. It’s slow, stiff, and awkward to pull off at times, and the most irritating moments in my time with the game came from trying to simply break open random things around the levels or hit enemies as the horrible hit detection caused me to whiff right through them.

Additionally, I’m shocked that a game that is so graphically unaesthetic manages to run so poorly. Screen-tearing is abundant during both gameplay and cutscenes, the draw distance is abysmal, and the frame rate never stabilizes. The camera can swing around randomly from sluggishly player-controlled to awkward fixed-positioning, making these other optimization failures feel even more glaring. I battled with the camera and slowdown during the moderately tense sections far more than I ever did with any actual challenge.

Despite these shortcomings, however, The Lego Movie 2 is a game that never stops offering ways to discover new things. When I wasn’t battling with the camera, I found myself searching through the store to buy new items and characters to mess around with. The vast ensemble of playable characters never disappoints, and being able to customize them to create your own mix-matched player is an endless joy.

"The combat stands out as one of The Lego Movie 2’s worst aspects. As a matter of fact, in a title that handles exploration, collecting, and basic puzzle solving quite well, the infrequent addition of combat feels wholly unnecessary."

That said, I sometimes wished that the game hadn’t separated characters from items. Doing so means that characters are cosmetic-only, stealing away the unique and exciting feeling of unlocking someone new and getting to see their special abilities or combat options. Because of this, I designed a character I liked early on and rarely found any reason for swapping him out as I continued through the game, choosing to simply swap the items out on him instead. It gets the job done, but it certainly steals away one of the franchise’s most fun features and puts a bit of a damper on the experience of unlocking cool new characters.

While the character and item system is both exciting and disappointing in different ways, one of the more intriguing features in the game is a planet that sees you building a town of your own. Collecting new blueprints and items to build there throughout the journey gives the game an additional sense of purpose. Since you’re allowed to build the buildings more or less where you’d like, it’s unlikely for any two people to have the same town. In this sense, The Lego Movie 2 does exactly what Legos were designed to do: allow for creativity.

The remainder of the game is basically planets filled with pseudo-open world designs full of side quests and busywork. While there’s nothing overtly displeasing about the game’s planet designs, and levels like a giant asteroid are actually pretty interesting, there’s a relative lack of actual content in the more open-ended areas. Side quests begin to feel repetitive after a few hours, and even the game’s core gameplay loop of collecting can begin to slowly grow dull when scouring bland, uninspired open areas. But while I’d have preferred more linearity on some of the planets, tracking down the many extra and hidden items and bricks was nevertheless moderately fun even when I had to travel across barren places to get to them. If movement wasn’t so inherently slow and clunky to begin with, perhaps this wouldn’t have been such a damning problem for the game. As it stands, building vehicles in such segments is a must, and at least some of them are fairly fun to use.

"Side quests begin to feel repetitive after a few hours, and even the game’s core gameplay loop of collecting can begin to slowly grow dull when scouring bland, uninspired open areas."

Sadly, there’s just not much to The Lego Movie 2 Videogame that stands out as original. The core mechanics are mostly sound, but the rehashed movie story is told in a disjointed, unappealing fashion, and most of the things the game does well were done even better in previous games in the series.

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation 4.

New entries in the top ten include The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame in fourth place, with the PS4 version making up 59 percent of sales, and DiRT Rally 2.0 in sixth place, also having 59 percent of its sales on PS4. Codemasters’ latest rally title actually accounted for the second highest revenue of the week due to its higher retail price and was only beat out by Anthem.

The final new entry for the week was Trials Rising, particularly the Gold Edition, which debuted in tenth place. It saw 39 percent of sales on PS4, 33 percent on Xbox One, and 28 percent on Nintendo Switch. That’s a pretty good split, especially considering the franchise has just now made its debut for Nintendo consoles with this entry. As for Team Ninja’s Dead or Alive 6, it didn’t even come close to cracking the top 10, debuting in 21st place.

Check out all the games in the top ten physical sales chart below for the week ending March 2nd:

The Lego conveyor belt continues to chug on.

The Lego series is the video game equivalent of comfort food. With each new game made in this series, we know exactly what to expect – charming humour and enjoyable gameplay, among other things – and it’s always good. Another Lego game is almost upon us, and The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is promising exactly those things, with some additions of its own. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fourteen things you should know about it.

THE SETUP

Being a movie tie-in, The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will, of course, feature a similar setup. Emmet and other characters find themselves in a Bricksburg left in ruins in the wake of the invasion by the alien monsters. Obviously, it now falls to Emmet and his friends to not only rescue even more characters, but also to rebuild the world.

REBUILD THE WORLD

Rebuilding the world, as we just discussed, will be an important part of the game’s story mode, but players will also have the option to flex their creative muscles elsewhere. The Lego Movie 2 Videogame features a sandbox mode, where players will be able to use the creation tools on offer to let their imaginations run wild and build whatever the tools allow them to.

BUILDING TOOLS

Speaking of building- a larger focus on building mechanics in The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is the one area in which the game is doing something that is quite different from previous Lego titles. Using the Lego bricks that you pick up during gameplay, you’ll be able to build structures freely, any time and anywhere. This mechanic, according to the developers, will also impact puzzles quite a bit.

ROSTER

Lego games have always offered massive and varied rosters of playable characters, and The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is going to be no different. There are going to be over 100 playable characters, which include, of course, the likes of Emmet, Lucy, and Batman, in addition to several returning characters from the first game as well. On top of that, new “mysterious” additions like General Mayhem and Rex Dangervest will also be joining the party.

ENHANCED COMBAT

We pretty much already know what to expect from combat in The Lego Movie 2 Videogame– simple, fun, and accessible, like any other game in the series. That said, developers TT Fusion have said that combat mechanics in the game will be “enhanced”. While they haven’t gone into detail about what to expect by way of said enhancements other than mentioning special “build attacks” for each character, we can probably look forward to new combos and abilities.

BUILD ATTACKS

Speaking of build attacks- these sound particularly interesting. Each of the Master Builders from the first movie (or game) will have unique build attacks of their own, where each character will build something special to then use in combat. Emmet will build himself a mech that he will then pilot, Lucy will build massive speakers that sound out explosive waves, while Batman will be able to bat-build a huge Bat-Turret.

WORLDS

In The Lego Movie 2 Videogame, the worlds we’ll be visiting are going to be almost as important as the characters we’ll be playing as- and apparently, there’s going to be plenty of worlds to visit. In addition to new worlds based on the ones in the movie itself, several worlds from the first game will also be returning.

TAKING STUFF FROM THE FILMS

Movie tie-ins haven’t always worked out very well in our medium, but the Lego games always seem to find the right ways to make them work. The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will be attempting to do just that, taking world, events, and set-pieces from the movie that the developers felt would specifically make for great gameplay sections, rather than just copy-pasting all of it wholesale.

VARIOUS STYLES AND ERAS

Just like the first game (and both the movies, of course), The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is being built by developers TT Fusion as the ultimate fan service experience for Lego fans. Multiple Lego eras will be represented in the game through, including the likes of Blacktron Alliance, Pharaoh’s Quest, and Johnny Thunder.

OPEN ENDED LEVELS

Levels in The Lego Movie 2 Videogame are going to be much more open ended than players are usually used to seeing in Lego games, and while that will of course impact moment-to-moment gameplay and exploration in interesting ways, the developers are also leveraging these larger levels to do other interesting things as well. For instance, several characters that appear in the movie only momentarily will have much more focus placed on them in the game, which will use its larger spaces to facilitate entire missions and backstories around them.

KEEPING IT FRESH

We started this feature by likening Lego games to comfort food, because of the familiar rhythm and formula they have found themselves in on a consistent basis throughout the years, but The Lego Movie Videogame 2 will be making a few tweaks here and there in an attempt to keep it fresh (just as other Lego games do as well, in fact). The addition of building and new combat abilities are surely bound to help, while the Relix system – which will have players looking for pods to find new and (occasionally) rare items – promises to contribute toward that end as well.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION

Character customization has always been a big draw for any Lego game, and that’s going to be true here as well (even if you can’t create a protagonist of your own like you could in last year’s DC Super-Villains). The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will offer some interesting customization tools and options, and allow players to create a mishmash of multiple characters in the game.

COLLECTIBLES

Another staple in any Lego game is looking for collectibles scattered throughout their levels, and yes, The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will be following suit here as well. From Master Pieces – which will be required to unlock new worlds – to Relics – which we just discussed – there will be plenty of opportunities for players to look for hidden collectibles in each of the game’s levels.

JOYCON SUPPORT

Co-op in Lego games is always a blast, but it’s even more enjoyable when it’s played locally (which is true for pretty much any game, actually). The Nintendo Switch version of the The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will have the upper hand over other versions of the game here, as it will be taking advantage of the system’s dual Joycons to allow for local co-op.

Tons of big name sequels clash with some awesome new IPs in February.

You would think that after Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2, we’d have to wait for some more high-profile titles. But in February, there’s plenty to look forward to, from turn-based tactical strategizing and anime crossovers to shared world shooting and looting and post-apocalyptic mayhem. Without further ado, here are the top 10 games to play in February:

Wargroove

The long-awaited, turn-based tactics game inspired by Advance Wars is nearly here. Chucklefish’s Wargroove offers a whopping 12 Commanders to play with, including Caesar the dog because of course a dog can command armies. Each Commander has special Grooves or abilities that can turn the tide of battle along with their own respective campaigns. Players can customize their own missions as well and also partake in local and online co-op or PvP. Wargroove’s retro goodness comes to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and PC on February 1st.

Trials Rising

After the experimental action in Trials of the Blood Dragon, RedLynx thankfully returns to its bike riding, platform puzzle roots with Trials Rising. You’re still navigating silly obstacles in exotic locations like Paris and Mount Everest, and yes, you’re still trying not to look bad while doing it. With a custom course builder and the new Tandem Bike mode, which sees two players controlling one bike at the same time, Trials Rising promises more challenges and hilarity than ever when it releases on February 26th for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PC and Xbox One.

Jump Force

Shonen Jump’s top names and Asta from Black Clover collide in one of the biggest crossover fighting games yet. Jump Force is developed by Spike Chunsoft and features 3v3 tag team fighting. Heroes like Ichigo from Bleach, Goku and Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z, Luffy from One Piece and Naruto from Naruto Shippuden will collide, much like how the anime-aesthetic collides with the lush real world visuals. Jump Force is out on February 15th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Far Cry New Dawn

Post-nuclear Hope County meets roving bands of Mad Max-esque maniacs meets…Expeditions to other random parts of the USA? There’s certainly a lot going on in Far Cry New Dawn as it continues the story of Far Cry 5 and introduces two new villains with the Twins, Mickey and Lou. It’s still the same Far Cry shooting you know and probably love but there’s a stronger RPG bent with gun crafting, damage numbers and so on. On the plus side, Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire return along with a new mechanic that continually escalates the difficulty of outposts. Far Cry New Dawn is out on February 15th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Metro Exodus

4A Games returns to the gaming fold with Metro Exodus, its post-apocalyptic first person shooter based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels. The story sees Artyom and friends traveling the continent by locomotive, experiencing different seasons and challenges en route to the far east. As seasons change and new threats emerge, you’ll have to make use of extensive gun customization and special weapons like the crossbow to survive. Artyom’s exodus starts on February 15th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Anthem

Okay, so the VIP access demo had some issues which took a while to resolve. But once players actually had a chance to play Anthem, BioWare’s upcoming looter shooter? It was pretty good! The full game promises a lot more with more World Events, bosses, story missions, and customization options for its four Javelins. The post-game Elder Game also seems extensive enough with Grandmaster difficulties, epic loot and the potential for over-powered builds. Anthem is out on February 22nd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and we can’t wait to see how it evolves further.

Dirt Rally 2.0

Dirt Rally, the Dark Souls of Sega Rally games, will be getting a follow-up soon. Along with the weather system in Dirt Rally 2.0, stages will face degradation, making the roads even more difficult to get a grip on. Dirt 4’s My Team is featured here as well as players hire experts to maintain their car and set-ups are easier learn (in theory) thanks to the new tutorials. With FIA World Rallycross Championship cars and circuits spanning Argentina, Australia and the USA, Dirt Rally 2.0 will have plenty in the tank when it arrives on February 26th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Crackdown 3

Big, loud and boisterous like its leading man Terry Crews, Crackdown 3 is finally upon us after multiple delays. The story may be straightforward – head into New Providence to dismantle the threat of the Terra Nova organization – but hunting down gangs and their bosses feels much more exciting. Different bosses and gangs can actually retaliate against you at any time, making for an even more dynamic open world. And if you’re interested in just wrecking the whole world, then the Wrecking Zone mode will be your playground as it features a fully destructible city and competitive multiplayer. Crackdown 3 releases on February 15th for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.

Etrian Odyssey Nexus

In Etrian Odyssey Nexus, the mysteries of the archipelago of Lemuria are uncovered by various explorers. Atlus is describing the game as the “definitive Etrian Odyssey experience”, and will appeal to both newcomers, as well as fans. Etrian Odyssey Nexus will be the last game in the series that will launch on the 3DS so you might want to give it a go if you still have your handheld.

The Lego Movie 2 Videogame

TT Fusion is making another Lego video game and water is still wet. You can’t argue with the series’ formula though and The Lego Movie 2 Videogame will offer environments and characters from both films to bolster gameplay. With new characters and some scenes from the movie to help transition between missions, The Lego Movie 2 Videogame could make for another fun time-waster with that signature Lego humour. It’s out on February 26th for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
