Free PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles are being retired from Sony’s PlayStation Plus service after this month. However, March promises two big PS4 titles for subscribers – Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and Thekla, Inc’s The Witness. It’s only two games, but they’re certainly worth the price of admission.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is, as the name suggests, a remaster of Infinity Ward’s classic 2007 first person shooter. With revamped graphics, old-school multiplayer, and the same crazy campaign, it’s certainly worth revisiting. As for The Witness, it’s a first person puzzle adventure game designed by Jonathan Blow of Braid fame. The player walks around a mysterious abandoned island, solving puzzles for some higher purpose.

February’s PlayStation Plus titles, including Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Divekick, will be available to download until March 8th. Any PS3 and PS Vita games downloaded in the past will still remain in your library as long as you have PlayStation Plus access.

It’s been a long time coming but Thelka Inc.’s The Witness, developed by Jonathan Blow of Braid fame, is finally available on iOS retailing for $9.99.

Marketed as a game with 500 puzzles and which “treats your time as precious”, The Witness essentially places you on an island rife with mystery. How you got there and who you are is a mystery but by solving the puzzles on the island, you may just find the key to returning home.

The Witness first launched in January 2016 and was critically acclaimed for its smart implementation of perspective and logical puzzles along with a beautiful aesthetic and soundtrack. Whether you’re playing it on iOS and PC, the game offers an incredibly meaty experience that should satisfy any fan of adventure or puzzle games.

The Witness is also available on Android for $13.50 for those interested. How well the game has been optimized for iOS remains to be seen but it only takes up 2.32 GB of space.

Thelka Inc.’s first person adventure/puzzler The Witness is the latest game to receive PS4 Pro support via a new patch and it has quite the ensemble of features attached.

PS4 Pro support was planned since September and Thelka has finally locked down what features can be expected. For HD screens, you can expect output at 1080p resolution and 60 FPS with 4x MSAA. This is a pretty significant increase from 900p resolution, 60 FPS and 2x MSAA in the base PS4 version.

In 4K, you have two different modes: 1440p, 60 FPS and 2x MSAA with the text and UI in 4K or 4K, 30 FPS and 2x MSAA for the entire game and UI. There’s no input lag so you won’t suffer from 30 FPS when playing in 4K.

HDR support has also been enabled for normal PS4 and PS4 Slim consoles. Make sure you download the update and have an HDR compatible TV to take full advantage of the difference it makes.

Jonathan Blow’s The Witness will  not push your PC hardware to its limit which means you will face next to no issues while running this game. However, surprisingly, some players have experienced some minor problems with the game. Please be advised that the following methods are to be used at the sole discretion of the platform owner. GamingBolt or its staff members take no responsibility for problems that may arise or issues that may occur from trying the below. Always remember that official support is always the best support. 

Some players have reported that shadows in the game look out of place. This was reportedly fix in a recent patch. For those who are suffering from motion sickness while playing the game, the developer is working on it and it will change certain graphical parameters of the title. This should help players who suffer from motion sickness while playing the game. Several players have reported (including one from GamingBolt’s staff) that the game randomly crashes or does not even start. Unfortunately we don’t have an update on when this will be fixed but we can suggesst updating your GPU drivers.

If you are getting “witness64_d3d11.exe has stopped working” error, try starting the game in Windowed mode and then press Alt+Enter to go into full screen. We know this is strange fix but it has worked for some players. If this still does not work then right click the game’s icon, and Run as Administrator. Alternatively, remove Remove the “-window” and start the game. You will get a configuration box, uncheck the full screen option and once the game loads, press Alt+Enter.

Note: Given that the wide range of PC hardware out there, the fixes mentioned here may or may not work for you. But it’s worth giving them a shot since these have worked for players who own the PC version of The Witness.

Blow sets about to explain what it’s like for an indie developer to develop for the PlayStation 4, that too on a timed exclusive title, and how The Witness differs from other games.

Announced with the PlayStation 4’s reveal this past February, The Witness takes us to a journey on an island made of puzzles which can be solved through manipulating various lights and switches. It was front and centre on Sony’s stage as part of the company’s new indie developer friendly policy.

Given how the Xbox One left indie devs for dead by prohibiting self publishing on Xbox Live, we can’t say the direction of Sony is a bad one right now. The Witness will release this year, and is also coming for PC and iOS.
