Square Enix has announced that Eidos Montreal’s Thief 4, the reboot of the series more commonly known as Thief, will have a Master Thief Edition that will be available for digital download on PC and is currently available for pre-order.

It will include the following, and be available at most major digital distributors: an official digital artbook with concept art from the world of Thieft; a digital comic that collects all the issues of Thief; a booster pack that grants you some optional in-game consumables to make things easier in the main game; the Director’s Cut OST; and The Bank Heist mission, which has you sneaking into the Stonemarket First Bank in order to covet the Star of Auldale.

Whichever version you pre-order will contain The Bank Heist, so don’t fret if you decided to pre-order the standard edition of the game. Thief releases on February 25th 2014 for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Eidos Montreal producer Stephane Roy talks about how once again graphics alone don't make a game.

Eidos Montreal producer Stephane Roy recently spoke to Videogamer about developers doing “bigger and better” things with next gen consoles, stating “We will have to be careful because it would be easy [for us to say], ‘it’s more powerful, let’s have more food on the plate’.”

Currently developing the next generation Thief, slated to release on PS4, PC and other next gen consoles, he stated that, “That said, I think now with this technical freedom – it’s not unlimited but we have much more freedom – I think now, the designers and artists will be able to really do what they have in mind.

“Too often there is a technical restriction and it’s not exactly the gameplay experience we want to give you. I’m pretty sure the artists and designers are really going to find a way to [fill] the memory, but we should be able now to create a game that what exactly we have in mind should be in front of you.

“So [the amount of RAM] is really, really cool, but let’s be smart and let’s make sure that we’re going to use this next-gen to support the gameplay, the fun factor, and the experience we want to give you, and not just be impressive for the technical aspect.

“If it’s not fun – even if it looks great, even if the physics are realistic – if it’s boring, then we’ve failed.”

Going for a "more nuanced" approach as far as thieving goes.

Arkane Studios’ Dishonored was critically acclaimed for offering us an excellent, first person sneaker with tons of killing possibilities. And with Eidos Montreal’s Thief, the good times keep rolling right?

Talking about Dishonored to CVG, Thief lead level designer Daniel Windfeld Schmidt stated that, “They did an awesome job. But when we were playing it, it was not what we wanted to do because they had very arcade, magical mechanics with teleportation and so on.

“That gave the player a lot of freedom and a lot of empowerment, but the game was about killing people and about revenge and we’re like, ‘we just want to steal stuff!’

“A lot of Dishonored is about having a lot of different ways to play and combine powers. We’re more about the nuanced options: how do you affect the environment with the tools you have? How do you manipulate the NPCs to circumvent them?

“To really feel immersiveness you need to have relativity. This is one of the reasons we went for the mystical aspect over the magical aspect. We wanted to be more grounded and make it feel as if you’re there pick-pocketing.”

Thief 4 or Thief, as Eidos Montreal is keen to call it, signals a reboot for the franchise. Matser criminal Garrett returns to the City to find it a melting pot for plague and despotism. Naturally being in it for himself, Garrett does the only thing he knows best: Loots the heck out of everyone around him.
Concept artist Nicolas Ferrand recently posted some new artwork for the game, showcasing some of the levels we’ll be visiting in the upcoming action adventure game for PC, PS4 and the next Xbox. These include the Sewers, the Streets – which carry a Sleepy Hollow-esque tone to them – and a Tavern, complete with drunken patrons.

As of now, Thief is set to release in 2014 and will be one of the bigger next-generation titles to release. Delayed for several years, the game will feature the same realistic gameplay and thieving that the franchise has become famous for.

Since its return to the public eye, Thief 4 – now being referred to as Thief given its reboot nature – has attracted its fair amount of attention. Screenshots for the game look phenomenal and the new Focus system is already attracting interest. As if to thank the community for its positive reception, Eidos Montreal has revealed a short teaser to hype the gameplay.

The teaser titled “Candle” has an unseen Garrett simply walk up and snuff out a candle from the shadows. The footage appears to be real-time but more importantly, it hypes a full gameplay reveal on April 2nd with the tagline “What’s Yours is Mine”.

Because he’s a thief. Get it?

Thief is currently slated to release for PS4, PC and other next generation consoles in 2014. Given all the hype that next generation franchises are getting, now is as good a time as any for Eidos Montreal to showcase the game on the road to E3 2013.

Game director Nick Cantin tells us everything to know about the new mechanic.

Eidos Montreal game director Nick Cantin has been busy in the past few weeks answering questions about the upcoming Thief 4’s Focus System. In fact, the Official Thief Forums themselves are a hive of activity.

He had this to say about the Focus System, which has been described as “Garrett’s ability to focus and speed up his reaction times. From a game design perspective, Focus is a layer that empowers the player and empowers Garrett.

“But, it’s not something that you’re forced to use. It’s something that you manage, something that is one of the tools at Garrett’s disposal that he can use to tackle the various situations he is confronted with.”

He did state that Focus isn’t related to navigation. “We don’t want to kill that exploration by giving the player too much information or too many hints.”

But the system is completely optional. “Presently, it’s completely the players choice to use Focus or not. If players want to challenge themselves to stick to Garrett’s basic abilities, they can.”

Thief 4 will release in 2014 for PC, PS4 and other next gen platforms.

In spirit, but not in function, it would be really cool to see the following evolved further.

When Thief 4…I mean, Thief was unveiled after a long, long, long time of hype, it was amazing to note the overall structure of the game. A world ravaged by plague and kept in a kind of police state under someone who wields absolute power while the shadowy Garrett pursues his own agenda – but doesn’t that sound a little familiar? It immediately brought to mine Arkane Studios’ Dishonored, a tight little action-stealth game that emphasized the rewards and challenge of sneaking through and lethally disarming your enemies versus going on a total massacre. So it leads to the question: If the new Thief can be inspired by games like Assassin’s Creed, why not do a few things that Dishonored does as well?

Here’s our top 5 list for things that Thief could learn from Dishonored. Keep in mind that no one is assuming knowledge of how Thief actually is; just scratching our heads and asking “Wouldn’t that be cool if”.

5. True Freedom of Choice

Assassin’s Creed gives you that unique feeling of taking several different routes to reach your objective – this is often dressed as “several different ways to complete your objective”. Rest assured they’re two different things. It just feels like taking a bunch of different roads to reach a junction point rather than all roads eventually leading to your final objective.

In Dishonored, this is reinforced by way of the powers you obtain. In the second mission for instance, you could possess a guard and walk through the Wall of Light unscathed. Or maybe use Blink and just traverse great distance. At different points, you could possess a rat and then enter into an area completely undetected. And along the way, you can either take a detour and check out side-quests or collect Runes. There’s choice, and variety – no two roads truly feel the same.

Thief features the ability to vault over different objects and obstacles, and while it may not have Dishonored’s magical abilities, it would be great if there were various ways to complete an objective, rather than various ways to reach a point from where your objective begins. Knowing the variety of things that can be stolen, they present an excellent reward for taking an unknown route while trying to complete an objective.

4. The Silent Protagonist

Yes, we get it. The protagonist shouldn’t be quiet because it’s not “realistic”. But that’s not the point of the trope – it’s about involving you in the game. I don’t yell at my fellow gamers for their corruption of Corvo throughout Dishonored when they take the route of mass murder – I yell at them for corrupting the city around them and most importantly, Emily.

Because the player is Corvo – the setting and characters are extensions of Corvo’s actions. But throughout the game, you feel inextricably linked to him and believe that every action is yours, not Corvo’s.

This fits even better with Garrett. He’s not someone who’s out to do the greater good – his quest is motivated by riches. He’s a thief and he only cares about himself – by that extension, the gamer cares more about his own survival first, and then whether his actions are doing the world good.

3. Variety in Actions

Dishonored feels so simple at first but the number of toys you have to play with is immense. It’s not even about the upgrades that can be obtained or slowing down time while blowing your enemies away and setting them on fire in mid-air before restarting time and watching them burn.

It’s about how you use those toys in your own way to do things that other people wouldn’t think of, like utilizing Blink in mid-air to more quickly remove threats by murder or knockout, or even exposing different areas of the environment containing plague carrying rats to enemies.

Thief needs that variety and thankfully, it’s been a trademark of the series since the beginning. From the sound of new additions like Focus Mode and the improved combat, it looks like Eidos Montreal has this part sewn up. Let’s also not forget that they’ve worked on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Variety isn’t that tough for them to accomplish.

2. A Unique World

The world of Dunwall was interesting because it felt new and above all else, real. This is the advantage of having the art director who brought us Half Life 2’s City 17 on your side, but in all honesty, the elements seen in Dishonored could have been disheveled and awkward. It’s to the game’s credit that it melds them all together. It lets you get as close to the world as you want, and still offers plenty more to see when you’re done. Best of all, how you act affects how the world evolves.

Thief has the opportunity to do the same. The world is fairly new and enough time has lapsed for Eidos Montreal to craft a completely new setting and atmosphere for Garrett to be immersed in.

1. Simple Yet Full of Depth

Honestly, this is what made Dishonored such a blast to play. Navigating environments was a joy. Sneaking around brothels and just taking out guards was easy. Combat was exhilarating without feeling overwhelming or easy. You could do as much or as little of the game as you wanted. You could take it slow or play it as a straight up action game. The more you immersed yourself, the more challenging things got – and unless you felt immersed in the world, there is no way you’d go to the trouble one must go through to save it.

Thief is still a ways off from release and thankfully hasn’t garnered the buzz of being a “next generation” title like most other games have. It has a ton of momentum to ride off of but if it wants to succeed, it needs to be able to break free from its niche while still inviting players to partake in it. And there’s no better example of how to do this than with Dishonored.

Garrett returns to a plague infested City and steals stuff. So not much has changed.

Eidos Montreal’s Thief 4, a next generation take on the cult favourite first person sneaker, looks good. Really good. In fact, despite the game’s magical elements being significantly toned down this time around, there will still be enough to entice gamers looking for the best ways to infiltrate wealthy manors and “relieve” denizens of their personal wares.

New details have since emerged from Game Informer, who had seen a gameplay demo for the game. According to the story, Garrett has returned to The City to find it plagued by, er, plague, a police-state infrastructure and the Baron who controls everything with an iron fist.

The regular stealth mechanics come into play. A dark tint on-screen tells you how well concealed you are, and you can use objects to distract guards. You can also climb up various objects such as pipes, leap over rooftops, dive through windows and much more.

There’s also the new Focus mechanic, which highlights objects to interact with, and can even be used together with pickpocketing to slow down time and net three times as much cash. In keeping with the navigation, you can also use a Fingerprints system for hints on which drawers to access, though all of them can be opened regardless.

Focus Mode also has many attack applications: Use Focus on an enemy and you’ll see several weak points, with which you can string together attacks to disable enemies.

But fighting isn’t Garrett’s main calling, and taking on swathes of guards is ill-advised. You’ll need to navigate intelligently as well, since guards can hunt you down in the level’s hiding places. Different enemies and NPCs will hunt you in different ways.

With the completion of each mission, you can use the money to upgrade your equipment and even deck out your hideout with different artifacts scattered through the game.

Some of Garrett’s tools will remind you of old Thief items such as the Blackjack for knocking enemies out; the Bow and multiple speciality arrows such as rope arrows for climbing and smoke starters for distractions; and a grappling claw for climbing. No word on whether Garrett’s mechanical eye with zoom functionality will return.

Thief 4 is currently scheduled to release for PS4, PC and other next generation platforms in 2014.

The long-awaited sequel has finally been revealed.

Eidos Montreal has finally revealed the long awaited first person sneaker follow-up with Thief 4 in Game Informer’s 240th issue. Head here for screenshots to the game.

Described as somewhat of a reboot to the franchise, Thief 4 will feature the return of Garreth to The City, a Gothic industrial cityscape, for one simple purpose: To steal from the rich and give to himself

He’ll have to go up against a new political tyrant called the Baron, and deal with a mysterious plague that reminds us more than a little of Arkane Studios’ Dishonored. Regardless, given the realism and emphasis on awesome tools and multiple ways to traverse the environment, we’re sure Thief 4 will carry its own appeal.

Given the amount of time it’s been in development, it’s not too surprising for Square Enix to plan ahead and release the game in 2014 for next-generation platforms. So far, releases for the PS4 and PC have been confirmed. Stay tuned for more details.
