With the holidays coming up, Epic Games Store has confirmed the date for its Holiday Sale. It starts on December 17th and promises discounts up to 75 percent, though it remains to be seen if the storefront’s entire catalogue will be included. Perhaps more enticing is that the storefront’s “15 Days of Free Games” offer will return on the same day.

Much like last year, the store will give away a new game every day for the next two weeks. They’ll be free for 24 hours so check back regularly for something that may catch your eye. Until then, however, this week’s two free games are available now with Pillars of Eternity – Definitive Edition and Tyranny – Gold Edition.

Both are computer RPGs developed by Obsidian Entertainment and have met with critical praise. These two editions contain all of the bonus content and downloadable content in addition to the base game. Interestingly enough, a new “mystery game” will unlock in about 6 hours and 20 minutes, which is around the time that The Game Awards starts. Stay tuned for more details on in the meantime.

The latest free PC title on the Epic Games Store is now available with Cave Story+, the classic Metroidvania title from Studio Pixel and Nicalis. Those expecting something meatier should stay tuned next week though. Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity – Definitive Edition and Tyranny – Gold Edition will be offered for free on December 10th to 17th.

Pillars of Eternity is a return to the classic CRPG gameplay of yore with the player exploring Eora, meeting companions and ultimately following their destiny. The Definitive Edition includes the base game, The White March: Part 1 and 2 expansions, and the Royal Edition’s bonus content. Tyranny is also an RPG but sees the player working under the Kyros, an evil overlord that has conquered the world.

As a Fatebinder, one ventures the world, dealing with the aftermath of Kyros’ conquest and ultimately being as evil as they choose. The Gold Edition features the base game, the Bastard’s Wound expansion, Tales from the Tiers which adds new events, and other bonus content. Claiming both titles requires having an Epic Games account and the Epic Games Launcher installed.

Shadow Hearts: From the New World

Imagine an alternate reality Prohibition era America with ninjas, talking cats, vampires and of course, demons. That’s Shadow Hearts: From the New World in a nutshell as players assume the role of teenage PI Johnny Garland. The game starts in a fixed path but quickly expands after a job that Johnny takes quickly goes off the rails. With a combat system dependent on timed button presses and combos, strange plot twists and an endearing cast of oddities, From the New World is perhaps the strangest and yet most endearing PS2 RPG of its time.

While it’s not the Steam Summer Sale, the Steam Spring Cleaning Event isn’t a terrible substitute. Announced recently and ending on May 28th, the event is centered around playing games that haven’t been touched in one’s Steam Library.

Which is incredibly easy given the number of purchases and sweet deals that Steam has provided over the years (to say nothing of free Humble Store games). Participate in the event and you’ll earn the Spring Cleaning badge which can be leveled.

Of course, the best part is that there are a whopping nine games to enjoy for free as well. These include Borderlands 2, Castle Crashers, Cities: Skylines, Dirt 4, Don’t Starve Together: A New Reign, Dead by Daylight, Left 4 Dead 2, Tyranny and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. If you seriously have nothing to do this weekend, that’s a ton of games to keep you busy.

All of these games also have discounts going on so if there’s a particular title you enjoyed, it can be purchased for cheap. And thus the vicious cycle of unplayed games continues.

Obsidian Entertainment’s most recent role playing game Tyranny was an interesting creation. It saw players taking on a villainous role and making their mark in the world, a different approach from Pillars of Eternity.

However, it hasn’t done as well in terms of sales as its publisher Paradox Interactive would have liked. Speaking to PCGamesN, Paradox CEO Fred Wester said, “Tyranny did OK. A lot of people are still on the fence to buy it.” He mentioned that sales could improve and saw it having a “long tail” with regards to sales.

Paradox VP of business development Shams Jorjani further added, “We’re overall OK with it, I think. Everyone was hoping that it would do better.” Wester then noted that, “It didn’t really meet the expectations we set for it initially, no.”

Obsidian’s statement on Tyranny praises it as an “incredibly deep and unique RPG that players adore. While a better reception in the market during a packed holiday season would have been great, we think it’s the kind of game that has legs and can do great over time.”

Obsidian Entertainment, responsible for the critically acclaimed computer RPG Pillars of Eternity, has announced that its next title Tyranny will be releasing on November 10th.

Th fantasy title takes place in a world where evil won out. The player, working under said evil, will decide their path in the world going forward. Tyranny will release for PC, Mac and Linux. Pre-orders are now possible and you can also check out the latest trailer below.

There are three different versions of the game to pick up, namely Commander Edition ($45), Archon Edition ($60) and Overlord Edition ($80), each with the base game and different digital content. This could include a short story colleciton, forum avatars, an art book, the original soundtrack, wallpapers signed by the developer and more.

Obsidian Entertainment’s Tyranny received its first gameplay footage during the PC Gaming Show last night (which was easy to miss with all the other blockbuster announcements). The computer RPG from the minds behind Pillars of Eternity introduces an intriguing premise – it’s set in a world where evil has won and as a lieutenant in the giant evil machine, you can choose to subjugate the populace in any way you wish.

That means either continuing to enforce an evil regime or simply giving the people a better life. Maybe you could rise up against your masters? Obsidian didn’t explain the possibilities of Tyranny’s storyline but the isometric combat should make Pillars of Eternity (and CRPG) fans feel right at home.

Obsidian Entertainment, developer of the critically acclaimed Pillars of Eternity, have announced a rather different RPG in its wake. Tyranny is a new RPG in development for PC and will take place in a fantasy world where evil has emerged victorious over the forces of good.

As Kyros the Overlord celebrates his victory in the war, players will find themselves as officers in his army. You’ll interact with the general population and encounter various “morally unclear decisions” as you traverse the world. It’s a rather interesting dynamic since we haven’t seen an RPG center on the villain since the days of Overlord (and that was more comedic than anything else).

Tyranny will be releasing later this year and an official website is now live. Check it out for more information and watch the official trailer for the game below. No updates on Pillars of Eternity 2 but it’s been confirmed for a while to be in development.
