Ubisoft seems poised to unveil the long-awaited remake, which may or may not be connected to the next rumored State of Play.

As if rumors about a new State of Play on April 16th weren’t enough, Ubisoft is reportedly planning to reveal Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced on the same day.

It started as a rather innocuous comment on Resetera by BlackBate, who said that the announcement was “planned to go live on the 16th.” An event is also apparently set for later in April, and the release is “not far away.” Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson followed up by noting that he had also heard of a reveal on April 16th, with previous reports from the site’s podcast claiming “mid-April.”

And if that isn’t definitive enough (at least as far as rumors go), NateTheHate also claimed that it’s on the same day. Could it have some connection to the rumored State of Play, which is allegedly third-party focused? He’s not sure. As such, you should assume they’re two separate things…unless Resynced suddenly appears on Sony’s showcase with a release date.

Could it launch sometime in the coming months? It’s not impossible, although with Ubisoft stating that it delayed an unannounced title from the current fiscal year to 2027, one has to wonder if that’s the case. Either way, we’ll find out in the coming week, so stay tuned for more details.

In the meantime, you can check out Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which received a patch for Upgraded PSSR support on PS5 Pro. Switch 2 players can even utilize a mouse and keyboard to play the open-world action RPG.

While Assassin's Creed Shadows won't be getting many more content drops for , Jean Guesdon teased that "a few surprises" are still to come.

As part of its recent announcement celebrating the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ubisoft has confirmed that the most recent entry in the series—Assassin’s Creed Shadows—is now moving into the final phase of its post-launch support. However, while the title will see fewer updates moving forward, the company has promised that there will be a few surprises. In the meantime, however, the Assassin’s Creed teams will start focusing their efforts towards the future of the franchise.

“We’re winding things down with smaller, less frequent updates… but still a few surprises! At the same time, our teams will begin shifting more focus toward what’s next for Assassin’s Creed,” wrote Vantage Studios’ head of content Jean Guesdon in a post.

As for what Assassin’s Creed fans can look forward to, Ubisoft has announced a mix of things, both new and old, that will keep players sated as it works on the next major entry in the franchise. 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Unity—originally released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One—will be getting a current-gen update for consoles, bringing in 60 FPS.

Another older title coming back in a major way is the finally-confirmed remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. The company made the announcement with a piece of concept art, along with the brand new logo for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Guesdon hasn’t announced any official release date, however. Instead, he said that fans should “keep your spyglass on the horizon.”

Looking to the future, Guesdon provided a small update on the development of Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. “While we know we haven’t shared much about this one yet, it’s being built with great care by our veteran team here at Ubisoft Montreal,” he wrote about the title before reaffirming that it will offer “a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history.”

Assassin’s Creed Invictus also got a shout-out from Guesdon, who called it a “new approach to multiplayer” for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. However, he didn’t go into much detail, only noting that “it isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested.” Currently, the development team is still “exploring ways” to get the community involved, since player feedback is “at the heart of our approach.”

Work on Assassin’s Creed Shadows is winding down after the game got several updates, with an entire year’s worth of post-launch support. The most recent of these was released back in February, which brought in the new Manual jumping feature. Once enabled, it allows players to jump whenever they might want. While this might sound fairly mundane, the extensive parkour capabilities that Naoe is already equipped with can pair up with the ability to jump whenever she wants to give her access to new areas, and a lot more freedom in how she moves around.

Along with this, the update also brought in detailed stats on just about every aspect of Assassin’s Creed Shadows you might want, be it how much damage you deal, to how cooldown reduction items might affect your abilities.

For more details on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, check out our review of its launch version. Also take a look at our review of its expansion—Claws of Awaji. The title is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.

The multiplayer title is coming, but it could be a while away as Ubisoft explores "ways to bring the community in earlier."

A recent brand update from Ubisoft has given us quite a bit of exciting news on a bunch of Assassin’s Creed projects in development, including a long-awaited update on the standalone multiplayer title, Invictus.

Having been relatively AWOL since its announcement in 2022, the studio is “exploring ways” to get you playing it and setting up a feedback loop to make it all that it aims to be. Vantage Studios Head of Content Jean Guesdon featured front and center on the announcement, and had this to say about it:

“We understand there’s a lot of curiosity around this project: yes, it’s a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise, but it isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested. With player feedback at the heart of our approach, we’re exploring ways to bring the community in earlier so we can shape the experience together.”

After missing its rumored release window of last year, Invictus’s launch continues to be a mystery, although we’re hopeful we might get to play a version of it at some point in the near future. It also seems that the developers paid attention to chatter about co-op being added to Shadows, about which Guesdon said:

“We’re also looking into bringing co‑op back to Assassin’s Creed – a detail we know didn’t go unnoticed. And while we recently chose to pivot away from an early project, the lessons from that work are already helping shape our approach going forward.”

Whether that project was the recently cancelled LEAGUE or something else entirely remains to be seen, but we’re smiling at a future in which we get to play Assassin’s Creed with – and potentially against – our gaming buddies. There was also an update on Black Flag Resynced (finally!), and an update to Unity that adds 60 FPS support. The Brotherhood might just be getting very active in the coming months, although the team is choosing a quality over quantity approach to the franchise’s future.

The next title from the franchise to get the 60 FPS treatment could see Arno's time in Paris feeling completely different on consoles.

Ubisoft has just announced a slew of updates on projects related to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and things seem to be progressing along quite well.

We’re particularly excited about Assassin’s Creed Unity, with a 60 FPS update dropping tomorrow for Xbox Seris X/S and PS5 to put a refreshing new twist on Arno’s experiences during the French Revolution. If this one is anything like the one that was dropped for Syndicate, we can tell you that it just hits different, as Arno flits from rooftop to rooftop with an agility that’s rare even among the Assassins.

If you happened to have missed this one back in the day, it’s worth checking out for its story and a gameplay loop that has shaken off a troubled, buggy start to become one of the best takes on stealth in the franchise behind Naoe’s excellent skill set. You might also be excited to know the official confirmation that Black Flag: Resynced is in the works, in what’s now one among the worst-kept secrets in recent gaming discourse.

There are also updates on Codename Hexe and Invictus, which are both gearing up to bring their own unique twists to the franchise’s sneaky formula. It’s looking like a good time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan despite Ubisoft’s recent turbulence.

It also occurs during a "pivotal moment in history," but the developer will be "quiet for a little longer" before revealing more.

While Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is finally real after so many rumors and leaks, Jean Guesdon of Vantage Studios also provided updates on other upcoming titles, including Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe.

Guesdon, who’s head of content on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, recently took over as creative director on the title after Clint Hocking’s departure. “While we know we haven’t shared much about this one yet, it’s being built with great care by our veteran team here at Ubisoft Montreal.” He also promised “a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history.”

That moment could be referring to the witch trials in Germany during the early 17th century. The protagonist is allegedly Elsa, a witch who has powers like possession, but apparently meets up with the Assassins and learns their trade.

Sadly, Guesdon didn’t confirm how much of this was true – only that it would take more time before the team was ready to discuss the project. “We are taking the time to deliver on its ambitious vision, which means we’ll be quiet for a little longer, but we love seeing all the enthusiasm happening on our channels and can’t wait to unveil more when the time is right.”

Announced in 2022 alongside Assassin’s Creed Shadows (then known as Codename Red), Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe apparently isn’t going to be a massive, sprawling open-world title like its predecessors. Instead, it’s allegedly a more linear experience with a few open-world elements. Ubisoft has already confirmed that it isn’t a role-playing game, so you’re unlikely to be min-maxing stats like in Odyssey or Shadows.

In fact, the combat could be much different from whatever we’ve seen till now, according to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson. It’s apparently been completely overhauled, and Ubisoft allegedly brought in contortionists for the motion capture. And while it seems a ways out, it could launch in Holiday 2027.

After what feels like years of rumors, teases and even ratings agencies confirming the same, Ubisoft has officially announced the remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. And just as expected, it’s now called Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, with a new concept art depicting protagonist Edward Kenway on a ship.

Jean Guesdon, head of content at Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios, said, “What matters most to us is giving each project the time it deserves and releasing them when they are ready.” And while repeating the classic Assassin’s Creed phrase, he made an exception in the case of Resynced. “Some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.”

And that’s it. No word on a release date or the rumored reveal in April. Honestly, as far as announcements go, this is probably the best way to do it – a sudden drop to leave fans wanting more.

Of course, several alleged details have been circulating for a while now. The modern-day segments set in Abstergo have reportedly been cut, with new quests and activities seemingly added. Loading screens are also apparently toast, and fans can seemingly look forward to the restoration of cut content. It’s also allegedly taking cues from the weather effects in Assassin’s Creed Shadows while delivering improvements to the map.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is allegedly set to launch in March, but following Ubisoft’s massive organizational shuffle, it was internally delayed. As always, we’ll need to wait for more details, but at least it’s finally real.

Ubisoft Montreal allegedly even hired contortionists for the motion capture, meaning lots of acrobatics during combat sequences.

Even with Clint Hocking departing from the project as creative director, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is apparently highly favored at Ubisoft. Part of this may be because it’s under Vantage Studios and thus much more stable. However, the sheer quality is reportedly prompting more developers to want to work on it, per insider Tom Henderson.

But that’s not all he had to share. In a new episode of the Insider Gaming Podcast, he reported that though it’s allegedly focused on the witchy aspects of newcomer Elsa, that’s only to a “certain degree.” Apparently, Ezio Auditore da Firenze from Assassin’s Creed 2 was planned to enter about “halfway through the game” and “kind of teach her the ways of the Assassins and all that kind of stuff.”

Whether that’s still the case remains to be seen, but it seems that Ubisoft also “completely” overhauled the series’ combat. “They actually hired contortionists to come in and do the mo-cap for it. So there’s going to be a lot of like acrobatics as well in the combat system,” said Henderson.

He concluded by noting that Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is looking like a Holiday 2027 release. That would fit with past titles, which have famously launched in November (Assassin’s Creed Shadows would have followed suit if it weren’t delayed). That could mean an announcement sometime this year, if not early 2027, which also lines up with reports of post-launch support for Shadows concluding this year.

Aside from the fact that it won’t be a role-playing game, Ubisoft hasn’t provided any details on Codename Hexe. Rumors claim that it’s a linear game with some open-world elements and the “darkest” entry yet, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Despite creative director Clint Hocking departing from Ubisoft, the next Assassin's Creed is reportedly highly favored among the teams.

The departure of creative director Clint Hocking from Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe may have more than a few people worried. After all, based on all the rumors, it seemed the project was doing everything right. Even with his replacement, Jean Guesdon’s extensive experience on the franchise, there could be changes that may interfere with the original vision.

While that’s still very much possible, it seems that internally, Codename Hexe is the darling for many at Ubisoft, according to Insider-Gaming’s Tom Henderson. “Some folk will be wary of this change, but Assassin’s Creed Hexe is the one project everyone at Ubisoft wants to work on because of how good it’s shaping up to be.”

Announced in 2022, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is the next title in the series, but it isn’t an RPG. In 2024, it was allegedly billed as “the darkest Assassin’s Creed game ever” and also features a female protagonist, Elsa, who has powers (including the ability to possess cats to distract guards).

Henderson later reported that while it would apparently have some open-world elements, Codename Hexe is mostly linear. Of course, the series’ logo as a twana and rumors of players dealing with German soldiers seemingly point to the story taking place during the Würzburg witch trials, but nothing is confirmed.

Interestingly, when another user told Henderson that this change doesn’t matter if you’re not experiencing an Assassin-focused story, he responded with a GIF of actor Tom Hanks saying, “Just wait.”

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe doesn’t have a release date or platforms, but it’s allegedly releasing next year. If Ubisoft fancies a proper reveal, perhaps it could be in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.

In a statement, Ubisoft confirmed that development on Codename Hexe will continue, and thanked Clint Hocking for his work.

A month after Ubisoft announced its organizational overhaul, it looks like plans for the Assassin’s Creed franchise are also being changed up. According to VideoGamesChronicle, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe’s creative director, Clint Hocking, has left the company. The report notes that this was announced through an internal meeting by the new leadership for the overall Assassin’s Creed series.

Despite Hocking’s departure, however, work on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is slated to continue, with head of content on the franchise, Jean Guesdon, taking over the role of creative director. A Ubisoft spokesperson thanked Hocking for his work at the company over the years in a statement.

“We sincerely thank [Clint] for his vision, creative contributions, and dedication over the years, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter,” said the spokesperson. “Development on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe continues with a seasoned team. The game will deliver something distinctive within the Assassin’s Creed franchise. We look forward to sharing more information in the future.”

Back in January, narrative director on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, Darby McDevitt, revealed that Mirage and Valhalla writer Christopher Grilli is also working on the project, albeit with a different team on “other content”. The main narrative, on the other hand, is being handled by Kristen McGorry, who has been described by McDevitt as being the game’s lead writer.

It is still unclear what this “other content” might be. However, the context of McDevitt’s confirmation might indicate that Grilli is either working on side content for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, or a post-launch DLC. Assassin’s Creed social media fan account Zephryss has noted their belief in the latter, saying, “I believe this is for a DLC for Hexe, and the original release plans for the game should not be affected.”

While Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe was first announced all the way back in 2022, there haven’t really been any details revealed about it. The title was announced alongside another one dubbed Codename Red, which would turn out to be Assassin’s Creed Shadows. As for when Codename Hexe might come out, rumors have indicated that Ubisoft wants to wrap up post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows before its release.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is slated to take place during the witch trials era, and has been described as being the darkest entry in the franchise so far. The game is also expected to have a larger emphasis on horror elements alongside the other aspects that the Assassin’s Creed series is known for.

As per Ubisoft’s recent restructuring, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is now under the leadership of one of its five creative houses – the recently-founded Vantage Studios. The creative house is also working on the Far Cry franchise. In a recent statement, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that there are two Far Cry projects currently in the works, along with “several” Assassin’s Creed titles.

Since its restructuring was announced, Ubisoft has been facing quite a bit of criticism from its employees. Union representatives have even gone as far as to call for Guillemot’s resignation.

Martin Schelling, Jean Guesdo and Francois de Billy will drive the series' "long-term vision, creative ambition, and continued growth.”

Following its massive shuffle of global studios into various Creative Houses, Ubisoft has announced who will be heading up leadership for Assassin’s Creed at Vantage Studios. The list includes Martin Schelling, appointed as Assassin’s Creed Brand Head; Jean Guesdo, Head of Content; and Francois de Billy, Head of Production Excellence.

Schelling has a long, storied history with the franchise. Previously serving as Chief Production Officer at Ubisoft, he’s worked on Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla. Guesdo has worked on the first game, back in 2007, and served as Creative Director on Black Flag and Origins. Finally, Billy is known for working as a Production Director on Origins and Valhalla, and has “collaborated closely” with Guesdo on “multiple flagship” titles in the franchise.

Joining their transition over the following weeks is producer Andree-Anne Boisvert, who handles cross-brand initiatives for the franchise while also serving as head of technological excellence. There’s also VP Lionel Hiller, working on brand and go-to-market strategy. However, the key trio’s role will be to play “a pivotal role in driving the Assassin’s Creed brand’s long-term vision, creative ambition, and continued growth.”

Thus far, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed several Assassin’s Creed titles in development, which include single-player and multiplayer experiences. While he didn’t explicitly list these titles, we know of Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, the next mainline single-player title, and Assassin’s Creed Invictus, a multiplayer title.
