The two new games are Worms Battlegrounds and Bound.

The official announcement for the PlayStation Plus games will soon be out either today or tomorrow. However, it seems that Sony has been a little late this time around. An image leaked from PlayStation Germany’s page which supposedly displays the games that will be coming in the month of November.

In the image below, you can see the games for the month of October such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Amnesia Collection. However, in the text, you can read that Worms Battlegrounds and Bound are the games coming in November.

Worms Battlegrounds is a 2D tactical turn-based game that was released in 2014 while Bound is a game that features a dancer as the main character and features gorgeous visuals. However, the games for November do seem like a step down from the previous month’s excellent titles.

This is only a rumor so take it with a grain of salt, or you could just wait until Sony officially announces the line-up.

How Worms Battlegrounds is the biggest Worms game ever.

Worms Battlegrounds has been touted as the biggest Worms game ever. The game features new and returning classes from Worms Revolution and Worms Clan Wars. The game also includes a brand new map editor for online and offline gameplay. Worms Battlegrounds also takes advantage of Xbox Smartglass and PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller.

GamingBolt caught up with Bethany Aston from Team 17 to know more about this artillery game. Check out Bethany’s response below.

Rashid Sayed: Worms Battlegrounds has received positive reception from the press. How do you guys feel about it?

Bethany Aston: We’re really excited to be releasing the first next gen Worms game! For those who may be new to the series, Worms is a turn-based strategy game that can be enjoyed solo but is absolutely fantastic with friends, a true party game! It’s great to bring it back to people’s living rooms for classic local couch play (or online if you prefer!).

Rashid Sayed: The game has been described as the biggest entry into the series. Can you please explain to us how exactly?

Bethany Aston: Thanks to the improved hardware it means we’re able to increase a lot of the content in Worms and still have it running at 1080p 60fps. So we’ve got 30% larger landscapes in there giving your more room to do battle on, we’re also able to add more dynamic water to the landscape than before.

"Bringing Worms to the new consoles has allowed us to play around with some fantastic functionality such as the SmartGlass companion app for the Xbox One version which allows you to check your clan’s stats on the go."

Rashid Sayed: Tell us about the different weapons that the players will have access to?

Bethany Aston: There are 65 weapons in total which includes 10 new weapons/utilities. The new ones are completely crazy as you’d expect from a Worms game! There’s still plenty of the old favourites in there such as the whacky Banana Bomb and hilariously devastating Holy Hand Grenade but now with the added additions of weapons such as the bonkers Winged Monkey and Grave Digger!

Rashid Sayed: Worms Battlegrounds is a PS4 and Xbox One exclusive. What kind of advantages this has bought to the franchise?

Bethany Aston: Bringing Worms to the new consoles has allowed us to play around with some fantastic functionality such as the SmartGlass companion app for the Xbox One version which allows you to check your clan’s stats on the go.

The awesome DualShock 4 pad means that we can now show what situation your worms have got themselves into via the light bar – watch it glow green to represent poison or blue to show they’ve stuck in dynamic water! There’s also quick weapon selection using the touch pad, equip up to 4 weapons of your choosing with handy swift gestures for times when you need to act fact! Simply swipe up to get out your Bazooka etc.

Rashid Sayed: Can you confirm the resolution and frame rates that both the versions run at?

Bethany Aston: Both versions of the game run at 1080p 60fps.

Rashid Sayed: Can you talk about the customisation options from emblems, outfits and voices?

Bethany Aston: Worms is known for its vast customization options and flexibility and Worms Battlegrounds certainly builds upon that! Not only can you create your own team of worms, customizing everything from their look, voice and names but now you can also create your own clans. Set your clan apart with a witty/silly name and funky emblem using the easy-to-use clan emblem editor.

"We rebuilt the engine a few years back when we launched Worms Revolution which meant we’re now able to feature more realistic physics and some very cool new features such as a contraptions, dynamic water and physics objects."

Rashid Sayed: Some gamers have complained that it’s more of the same [and it feels more like an ‘Ultimate Edition’ of the previous versions rather than a game made up from scratch. What are your thoughts on this and do you plan to address these issues?

Bethany Aston: We rebuilt the engine a few years back when we launched Worms Revolution which meant we’re now able to feature more realistic physics and some very cool new features such as a contraptions, dynamic water and physics objects.

We’ve added a lot of new content and mechanics in to Worms while also retaining and refining the classic gameplay that everyone knows and loves.

Rashid Sayed: Now that Worms Battlegrounds is done with, how is development going on Flockers and when can we expect more information about it?

Bethany Aston: Flockers is currently available in Steam Early Access, and it’s going great so far! The feedback we’ve received from the community has been brilliant and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to be able to work so closely with them, Flockers has definitely improved vastly already.

There’s a free 3 level demo so we’d definitely recommend everyone gives it a go and comes and join us in the Early Access experience.

Hundreds of worms were harmed in the writing of this review. You’ve got to pity the poor critters that lend their name to this franchise. Nearly two decades after the sacrificial invertebrates made their debut, the Worms are back and they’re facing more grizzly deaths at the hands of uzis, grenades, baseball bats and exploding sheep.

The latest Battlegrounds entry in the long-running series has “wormed” its way onto the PS4 and Xbox One (reviewed here) – and is one of the first games to be launched under the latter’s ID@Xbox program.

Team17 once again works its magic, transforming the affable creatures into killing machines across a lengthy single player campaign and a selection of multiplayer modes.

"The slightly elevated pricepoint can perhaps be forgiven given Worms Battlegrounds crams in a fair amount of content. There are 25 single player story missions story (revolving around a plot involving evil worms and museums, or something), 10 “Worm‐Ops” time attack missions, as well as multiplayer Deathmatch and Fort modes."

The slightly elevated price point can perhaps be forgiven given Worms Battlegrounds crams in a fair amount of content. There are 25 single player story missions story (revolving around a plot involving evil worms and museums, or something), 10 “Worm‐Ops” time attack missions, as well as multiplayer Deathmatch and Fort modes. Then there’s a level editor included for you more creative types and SmartGlass integration so you can keep an eye on your kills and statistics too.

While the various game modes are all well and good, clearly it’s the weapons that most of us are bothered about – and Team17 doesn’t disappoint. The developers have a collection of 65 items in the arsenal, including the intriguingly-named Winged Monkey, Teleport Raygun and Bovine Blitz. The doddering old woman, water-generating jet packs and cluster bombs are among our favourites!

And as if all those explosive inclusions weren’t enough, there’s also the option to customise your worms, providing them with comedic costumes, voices and unique names. There are over 200 variations and although it doesn’t affect the gameplay in any way, it does allow you to form some semblance of an emotional attachment with your cannon fodder, and succeeds in making you a little melancholic should one of your favourite creations meet an untimely demise. What’s more, you can pick from various classes of Worm too, with soldiers, scientists, scouts and heavy troopers offering a tactical element to the proceedings.

"Comedian Katherine Parkinson (star of shows such as IT Crowd) provides the humorous narration that punctuates the game and there’s a nice array of sound effects and voice samples - although all of these do get a tad repetitive after prolonged playtime."

As ever, the visuals are typically garish – the bright and colourful environments having their own distinct identities. All the action, in its glorious cartoony 2D style is played across five varied landscapes: Inca, Viking, Feudal Japan, Industrial Revolution and Prehistoric. There’s clearly nothing here that pushes any boundaries aesthetically but it looks nice enough. One criticism is the occasional difficulty differentiating between the fore- and backgrounds, which makes it tricky to target your enemies and achieve those vital hits.

Comedian Katherine Parkinson (star of shows such as IT Crowd) provides the humorous narration that punctuates the game and there’s a nice array of sound effects and voice samples – although all of these do get a tad repetitive after prolonged playtime.

Gameplay-wise, Worms can be enjoyed by people of all ages – despite its heavy emphasis on weapons and destruction. Be warned, however, it is a turn-based strategy game so it is slow paced and may not appeal to the more action-oriented or younger gamer.

"Matchmaking can occasionally be frustrating and all too often I found myself being kicked from a game for no good reason. And when I did join a few, I came up against either absolute newbies who made for easy kills or shrewd tacticians who certainly knew their way around a jet pack and ninja rope, quickly wiping out my entire team."

Perhaps the most significant flaw is the enemy AI. Rival worms are sometimes bumbling, swinging between complete ineptitude – firing their weapons off target and inadvertently blowing themselves up – or demonstrating pinpoint accuracy and pulling off an incredibly tricky shot at your expense.

It doesn’t detract too much from your enjoyment, however. The single player campaign and “Worm Ops” mode are really little more than a lengthy tutorial, introducing you to the various gameplay mechanics… it’s the multiplayer segment that really deserves the plaudits. Battlegrounds boasts both local and online multiplayer – great fun and probably where most of your time will be spent. Games can be tailored and tweaked, with factors such as weapon strength and the time between turns easily adjusted.

Matchmaking can occasionally be frustrating and all too often I found myself being kicked from a game for no good reason. And when I did join a few, I came up against either absolute newbies who made for easy kills or shrewd tacticians who certainly knew their way around a jet pack and ninja rope, quickly wiping out my entire team. It’s testament to the game, however, that none of these issues deterred me from diving back into the action time and time again.

Battlegrounds is certainly a fun game and there’s plenty of replayability – especially if you’re playing human opponents. It’s easy to get to grips with but difficult to master. A little practice, however, and you’ll become a lean, mean, worm-killing machine!

To be part of ID@Xbox.

Earlier we reported that as part of the first wave of ID@Xbox titles – essentially the Xbox One’s indie development program – there would be Nutjitsu and a new Worms game from Team 17. The latter has finally confirmed that this game is Worms Battlegrounds and that it will release on both Xbox One and PS4 this year.

Given that ID@Xbox begins in March – not to mention the so-called parity clause Microsoft asks indie developers – it’s interesting to note that Team 17 is self publishing the PS4 version. It doesn’t seem to becoming to PC as of now, but that could change later. No other details about Worms Battlegrounds has been provided as of yet.

Worms Battlegrounds and Nutjitsu are what Microsoft has thus far for its indie lineup. Can it topple Sony’s might, especially when the latter has a head-start? We’ll find out in the coming months. Which console looks promising to you though? Let us know in the comments.
