WWE's chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon says an RPG is in the works, and seems to suggest it's being made for mobile devices.

The WWE brand had a tough few years there in the video games space, but after taking a year off to sort out its many messes, the series returned re-energized this year with the launch of WWE 2K22. The revamped and improved wrestling game is doing well for itself, with fans of the series also appreciating its many improvements- but it seems there might be even more to look forward to in the future.

Apparently, a WWE RPG is currently in development. During WWE’s recent earnings call, the company’s chief brand officer, former wrestler Stephanie McMahon, said that thanks to a new deal, an RPG based on WWE is currently in the works.

“We continue to see strength in the performance of our mobile games with 2K and Scopely, SuperCard and Champions, and recently signed a new deal in the role-playing game space that will be announced soon,” she said.

Based on what McMahon says, it seems like 2K is once again the partner that WWE is working with for this game, though she does seem to imply that the RPG is being made for mobile devices. Apparently, its announcement is coming soon, which means we should know for sure one way or another not too long from now, but fans will, of course, be hoping that the game is a full-fledged RPG being made for PC and consoles.

Meanwhile, recently, indie developer Mega Cat Studio also announced a wrestling JRPG named WrestleQuest, which looks all sorts of intriguing. You can learn more about the game in our recent interview with creative director Zack Manko through here.

Hulkamania and various other assorted WWE properties is finally running wild on the Xbox One, as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) announced that the WWE Network is now available for the console. As the first 24/7 streaming network for wrestling – with other original programming and documentaries also presented – the WWE Network is available for $9.99 a month with an initial six month commitment from consumers. Once you sign up though, you get access to damn near every program that the WWE producers, including its PPV events which normally retailed for $59.99 not too long ago.

The service also provides a video on demand library of past WWE events and PPVs, WCW shows and PPVs, ECW shows and much, much more. Do you want to revisit the Monday Night Wars? Maybe rewatch Wrestlemania 30 in HD? Or perhaps go back to the creation of the nWo? It’s all there, whenever you want to view it.

The WWE Network is also available on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Apple TV, Roku, iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and many more devices. It’s worth noting that you’ll need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access it on Xbox platforms.

To be released for Xbox 360 and PS3.

<img decoding="async" src="https://gamingbolt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/WWE.jpg" alt="Champion CM Punk is infamous for taking potshots at wrestling journalists for their "rumours". Take Two Interactive has announced that WWE 2K14, the next game in the WWE franchise, will be releasing on October 29th for Xbox 360 and PS3. While developed by Yuke’s, Visual Concepts (who’ve worked on the NBA 2K series) will also be involved.

After since THQ went bankrupt, there were concerns over the future of its franchises. One of those was the WWE series, developed by Yuke’s, but given the popularity of the games – and the fact that Vince McMahon knows it – it was always a given that a new deal would be drawn up.

Take Two Interactive would acquire the right for the franchise, under the 2K Sports label, and Yuke’s currently has a multi-year licensing deal to continue developing games in the series.

Dropping the Smackdown vs Raw label since WWE 12’s release, WWE2K14 is expected to include current and past superstars from the sports entertainment organization along with modifications to its Predator Technology.

As the rumours have it, Take Two Interactive confirmed that it has taken up the WWE license from THQ after it went bankrupt. This means that Japanese developer Yuke’s will develop the games and Take Two will publish them.

Speaking to Polygon, the publisher stated that, “We can confirm that we have entered into an agreement to publish the WWE video game series that is developed by Yukes [sic].

“At this time, the agreement is pending court approval and we anticipate that it will be finalized shortly. We are very excited about the potential of this agreement and will have more to share at the appropriate time.”

Other factors, including WWE’s claim of $45 million against THQ have been waived; the publisher will now pay the company $650,000 in royalties for any games sold during bankruptcy. Take Two will also receive equipment, software and assets related from THQ for development, though it’s not revealed for how much.

The publisher will also hire 20 employees from THQ’s staff for the sole purpose of WWE games production.

Well... you don't get Vince in a bad mood.

Oh boy, this is a bit tough for WWE. Vince McMahon is probably someone most of you know already because he was actively participating in the WWE action despite being a chairman of the company. It has been revealed that he is now furious of the fact that THQ has listed them as an unsecured creditor, and chances are they won’t get the money back.

How much money? Well, it’s $45 million according to a new statement released by them.

“WWE (NYSE:WWE) is listed in THQ, Inc.’s recent bankruptcy filing as an unsecured creditor holding a claim of approximately $45 million reflecting the entirety of the existing multi-year agreement,” they said.

“Any impairment of a current THQ account receivable would be immaterial to WWE’s financial statements. Even if the impact of THQ’s bankruptcy were detrimental to WWE, the Company does not believe that the ultimate economic impact for financial statement purposes would materially and adversely affect the results of operations or financial position of WWE in light of the strength of the WWE brand and the historical performance of WWE’s video game business.”

It looks like THQ would have a fight on their hands as WWE lawyers go to town on them, but since WWE is an unsecured creditor it looks like there’s nothing WWE can do.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

In search for that perfect WWE game.

If you live anywhere that’s anywhere, you’d be somewhat aware of the Smackdown series of wrestling games. Heck, if you’re super hardcore, you’d remember the days of WWF Warzone and WCW vs NWO Revenge for the Nintendo 64. But the Smackdown games brought something special. Originally Smackdown was only for the Playstation (and later the Playstation 2).

The WWF/WWE craze being so high in India at the time, it made sense to include the titles as showcases along with Tekken in video game parlours. Lo and behold, as generation upon generations of teens grew up, wrasslin’ and reversing the hell out of you, from Dehradun to Delhi. It’s truly an amazing phenomenon to look back on.

However, for the developer Yuke’s, it also kickstarted a market for wrestling game fans. A market that loved new modes, moves, wrestlers, improved graphics and more. It showed the advantage of CD-ROM over the cartridge with the amount of content that could fit, including play-by-play commentary. More than anything, it culminated in a fun series. Games that focussed more on the wrestling – sure, presentation was better, but it wasn’t the best compared to what other franchises were doing at the time. For all intents and purposes, nailing Chris Jericho’s triple power bomb and winning that hardcore match were all that we needed.

In fact, it’s hard to find much difference between the TV show and the games at the time. WWF catered more to an edgy, fast-paced style of entertainment that featured plenty of real-life brutality. The games, for their part, didn’t skimp on the blood, barbed wire or wanton madness. Storylines – though they be strong – be damned. It wasn’t a matter of plot or characters – maybe because it felt more “real” at the time, that we got so involved. Maybe it hit so close to home that we truly felt like the Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin at times.

This was during the WWE’s most lucrative period, referred to as the “Attitude Era”. However, as the Smackdown games got bigger – along with the WWE – something happened. Suddenly, it wasn’t about just a game. It was about the current events of WWE. The reigning champion and top-billed stars were on the video games covers. Smackdown became Smackdown vs Raw to reflect the “brand split” (since WWE had purchased it’s competitor WCW and was overflowing with wrestlers). The game was now a yearly release because, hey, a hell of a lot changes in a year. Like the new Career and Make-a-Superstar modes. Suddenly, the focus was shifting further away from being a wrestler to controlling one. The message wasn’t to let you feel like Shawn Michaels, but to let you play as him. Reality was slowly but surely bleeding through, as it was hard to tell what was “fixed” and what was “real”.

And lord help us, it was the time the dev teams got lazy and threw in an instant reversal system that relied more on one’s spamming abilities than anything else. Latter attempts were made to rectify this with new systems and transitions into holds and moves, but it still remains a stain on modern wrestling games.

Fast forward to the new age, the dawn of WWE’s PG Era. This is an odd time, with a de-emphasis on technical wrestling, more attention to story telling and “plot-lines”. Because wrestling is just a performance art now. Everyone knows it’s not real, that the results are determined beforehand, and all the action happening before us is just entertainment. How else do you compete with something like MMA or Boxing in that regard, both which offer instant and real gratification mixed with unpredictability for the violence-seekers among us?

The video games now aren’t so much about wrestling (go figure). They’re not about nailing the signature moves for the right characters. One of CM Punk’s running grapples in WWE ’12 is a flying head-scissors into a floatover reverse neck-breaker. Has anyone seen him attempt that on TV?

It’s now more about who’s on the cover of the game, since that represents today’s top dog. Systems are now named after wrestler aliases, instant replays and crowd reactions are flashier and more professional than ever, match categories allow you to set whether you’d like a quick hoss fight or a long, epic battle. Career mode lets you now relive moments from the Attitude Era, in a bizarre time loop where things are real but seen through the looking glass of real-life perception. Rosters and DLC characters aren’t that big a deal now – after all, whoever’s got the highest character ranking wins by default. Matches are now more Undertaker and John Cena than the confrontations of yore. Much like WWE today (well, at least in terms of John Cena being everywhere).

That’s not to say the new games aren’t any good (though they really do pale in comparison to the classics). But the days when you could have a battle of cruiserweights is long gone. The days when run-ins were interesting and you went TKO style if you wanted a long match. It just wasn’t all about recreating the “WWE Universe” feeling. It was about being one of these fake wresting muscular guys while pummeling other fake wrestling muscular guys. The games will always reflect the product however – don’t be surprised to see Touts implemented somehow for the future – but hopefully a day comes when we’ve got the wrestling game we need, rather than the one WWE thinks we want.

Brock Lesnar is in a contract with UFC. So when the news broke out that he was going to be in a WWE videogame, people were skeptical and thought, “Maybe, he want’s to wrestle in the WWE!”

That’s not going to happen because of contractual obligations and the UFC president holds a tight leash over him. Brock Lesnar was a legend in the WWE and held the WWE Championship for a long time at a young age. He left the WWE in 2004 and is now in the UFC.

We have a video where UFC president, Dana White is being asked about Brock’s presence in the WWE and he was pretty cool with it. Check it out and tell us what you think in the comments section below.
