Game Pass Standard launches in place of the former base console tier of the subscription service, and doesn't include day one releases.

In June, in addition to raising Game Pass prices again, Microsoft announced that it was also discontinuing the base console tier of the subscription service for new members, and that the tier would be replaced with the new Xbox Game Pass Standard down the road. That new base tier has now released.

Microsoft has announced that Xbox Game Pass Standard is now available for subscribers on consoles, and is priced at $14.99 per month. Standard will include all the benefits of Game Pass Core (i.e. online multiplayer access), in addition to Game Pass’ library of hundreds of titles, both first- and third-party.

As previously announced, however, Xbox Game Pass Standard will not include day one releases, so if that’s something you’re looking for as a new subscriber on consoles, you’ll have to go with Game Pass Ultimate, which costs $19.99 per month.

Earlier this year, reports claimed that Microsoft was working on another, cheaper tier for Game Pass that would be cloud-based. Read more on that through here.

Though existing subscribers will keep their memberships as is, new users won't be able to subscribe to the current base tier starting July 10.

True to leaks, Microsoft has confirmed that Game Pass is indeed going to see price increases for all of its tiers, but the subscription service is also seeing other, additional changes on top of that- and quite significant ones at that, as reported by Windows Central.

As aforementioned leaks claimed, Microsoft is also set to introduce a new tier of the subscription service. Called Xbox Game Pass Standard, it will replace the existing base Xbox Game Pass tier for console users, will be priced at $14.99 per month, and significantly, won’t include any day one releases, which means the only way for Game Pass subscribers to get day and date access to titles will be via subscriptions to the Ultimate or PC tiers.

So what happens if you’re already subscribed to the base console tier? Microsoft says existing Xbox Game Pass members will get to keep their subscriptions without any changes until they run out. Starting July 10, however, new subscribers will not be able to select the base Game Pass tier.

A specific release date for Xbox Game Pass Standard is currently unknown, but Microsoft says the new tier will become available “in the coming months”, which means new Game Pass subscribers on console are going to have no option other than the Core or Ultimate tiers for the time being.

A new Standard tier will be accompanied by prices for Game Pass PC and Ultimate increasing to $12 and $20 per month respectively.

Game Pass has already seen a number of price increases over the years, but with the full force of Activision Blizzard’s catalog looking primed to hit the service, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 later this year, Microsoft is set to ratchet up the service’s prices once again, something that Xbox boss Phil Spencer himself said earlier in the year was bound to happen sooner rather than later.

As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft is set to increase Game Pass prices, while also introducing a new tier of the service for newcomers, as leaks previously claimed. Xbox Game Pass Core is seeing is annual subscription price raised from $59.99 to $74.99, though monthly prices will remain unchanged at $9.99.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s price hike will see it going from $16.99 per month to $19.99 per month, while PC Game Pass’ hike will take its monthly subscription price from $9.99 to $11.99. Microsoft says prices are going to increase globally, and will come into effect on July 10 for new members. Meanwhile, for existing subscribers with recurring charges, the new prices will go into effect on September 12.

Meanwhile, the base Xbox Game Pass tier is going to be replaced with Xbox Game Pass Standard, which will have $14.99 per month subscriptions starting this September and won’t include day one releases.
