The Last of Us: Remastered Almost Faced Disc Space Limitations

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann says all cinematics are 1080p/60 FPS and rendered from scratch.

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Remastered will be bringing the PS3 hit to the PS4 and in stunning, 1080p glory. Those revamped visuals may look snazzy but according to creative director Neil Druckmann in conversation with EDGE, the developer had concerns with fitting it all on to a single Blu-ray.

“Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60fps, and that involved rendering them all from scratch. It’s interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is ‘Can we fit all this on the disc?’”

Druckmann did reveal that the same assets seen in cinematics will be used in-game. “We don’t build it with high assets in mind to then port it, but it did give us a leg up. If we hadn’t done that, we might not have made the call to bring it over to PS4.”

Despite rumours that it would be out this June, The Last of Us: Remastered will be releasing in Q3-Q4 of this year.
