The first teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has finally been revealed, providing a look at Bowser (voiced by Jack Black) and Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt). Check it out below.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel writing the screenplay, the story sees Bowser going around, conquering other kingdoms to obtain the Power Stars. Mario winds up in the Mushroom Kingdom, and after meeting up with Toad (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), they set off. Of course, Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day) also makes an appearance, running away from numerous threats.
Other talent includes Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. Even Spike (voiced by Sebastian Maniscalco) is featured, though it’s unknown if the other Koopa siblings appear in the film.
In a recent statement, Shigeru Miyamoto (who produces the film for Nintendo) said, “What kind of movie should Super Mario Bros. be? We have been working for a very long time with Chris of Illumination thinking about this question. We are now able to have everyone get a peek at the film. With not just the story itself, but through the characters’ looks, their emotions, and various gestures, we have built a Super Mario world using the language of film.
“Please enjoy the unique Mushroom Kingdom experience spread widely on the theater screen. Also, keep an eye out for the characters, and memories from Nintendo games sprinkled in small parts of the screen throughout the film. The release is just around the corner, and we are in the fine-tuning phase finalizing all the details, just as we do with a Nintendo game. It is a film for all ages to enjoy, and I ask everyone to please cheer for Mario at the theaters.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out on April 7th, 2023, in North America and April 28th, 2023, in Japan. Stay tuned for more trailers in the months to come.
