Torment Developer Never Dreamed of Beating Kickstarter Record, Criticizes Publisher Pitches

CEO Brian Fargo never expected to beat the Kickstarter record. And he doesn't expect to see publisher pitches again anytime soon.

The year has started off quite strong for developer inXile, composed of developers who worked on the original Planescape: Torment along with Wasteland. Being the fastest Kickstarter to hit $1 million in funding – achieving the same in seven hours – and now boasting of $2 million in funding, CEO Brian Fargo surely didn’t expect to reach this point.

Speaking to [a]list, he said, “We never dreamed about beating the Kickstarter record. The stars really lined up for this one.” And now with both Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera being successful, he won’t have to worry about publisher pitches anymore.

Which anyway got extremely ridiculous. “It really got absurd at the end when we would have publishers come to us with a specific idea they wanted created. We would spend months working with their producer to basically communicate their vision with concept art etc. only to have their own idea shot down in committee. That was when I knew it was time to take matters into my own hands.”
