For those who are game developers, or just have a strong interest in how the sausage is made so to speak, it was a pretty exciting day. Epic Games unveiled their newest engine, Unreal Engine 5, with a tech demo that was running on the PS5 which you can check out more about through here. The demo has already been combed over by the fascinated, but now you can get the technical aspects of it straight from the horse’s mouth.
Eurogamer sat down with several key engineers from Epic Games to discuss the tech demo and Unreal 5. There Vice President of Engineering Nick Penwarden revealed the rendering situation with the demo on PS5. It was rendering at 1440p a majority of the time, confirming what many suspected in that it was indeed using dynamic resolution.
“Interestingly, it does work very well with our dynamic resolution technique as well,” said Penwarden. “So, when GPU load gets high we can lower the screen resolution a bit and then we can adapt to that. In the demo we actually did use dynamic resolution, although it ends up rendering at about 1440p most of the time.”
So, there you go. It was a very impressive tech demo for sure, and it looks like Unreal 5 will be quite the benchmark. Apparently a lot of developers and publishers are already buzzing. Like all engines, it will be fascinating to watch it evolve as more and more games will undoubtedly use it.
