Unreal Engine Update 4.10 Preview Is Now Available

Update brings optimizations for VR.

The preview build for the forthcoming Unreal Engine 4.10 has been released by Epic Games today; the preview, called ‘Preview 1’ (they’re not winning any awards for originality of the name, at least), includes a sneak peak at a lot of upcoming features to Unreal Engine 4 that will probably be relevant to game developers, including implementation of virtual reality tools.

These improvements include an optimization to the rendering process for head-mounted displays like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR, as well as the improvement of motion controller components.

Epic Games does warn that ‘preview releases are not fully quality tested, that they are still under heavy active development, and that they should be considered as unstable until the final release;’ ‘developers should not convert their projects for active development on preview releases.’

Still though, it’s exciting to see Epic try to stay abreast of market developments with Unreal Engine 4- I suspect the pressure of competition from Unity and CryEngine has been overall good for the game developer, and in turn, for the customer.
