Riot Games’ Valorant is the hot new competitive FPS on the block, notching up impressive numbers on Twitch with the closed beta. The development team has talked about various features of the game, including 128 tick rate servers and net code. However, its latest developer diary talks more about the intrinsic game design.
Senior game designer Salvatore Garozzo and design lead Trevor Romleski discuss the tactical shooter and the challenges that go with it. The main idea behind Valorant is to have slower, more methodical movement. Shooting while moving also affects your accuracy. Both of these things are meant to have players think about their positioning.
However, the development team wants a mix of abilities and gun play, allowing for teamwork along with some clutch moments. Thus far, Valorant seems to be scoring well with shooter fans, both tactical and otherwise, but we’ll see how it pans out at release. It’s currently set to arrive this Summer for PC.
