Valve Confirms It Will Now Allow Literally Anything on Steam

Except for illegal stuff, and "trolling".

After some controversies regarding inconsistencies on what Valve does and does not allow on the Steam Store, Valve has confirmed that it will now allow literally anything on its storefront, and that it will stop policing content on there entirely, letting anything, as long as it is not illegal or “trolling”, on. Which… is not the way to handle this, Valve.

Steam has been flooded by a deluge of low quality games, as well as games that attempt to incite controversy and are thinly veiled hate speech, such as Hatred (which, as the name might give away, is unveiled hate speech). Valve would be better advised trying to monitor what it does and does not let on its storefront, not give up entirely after some notable incidents have caused them to become the subject of ire.

That’s my take on it- Valve disagrees. Instead what Valve wants to do now is to allow each Steam user to customize their own experience for themselves. To that end, Valve will be building better tools to help ensure that everyone will only see games that are suited to their sensibilities. Which, again- okay, you know what, let’s give that a try. Automated algorithms have never been the answer to this problem, for as long as Valve has been trying, but let’s give this a concerted attempt with an open mind.

Meanwhile, I recommend people stop relying on Steam itself for game discovery, relying on outside sources to do that, and on Valve for simply purchasing the game.
