While Microsoft isn’t talking about just how many consoles it has sold since the Xbox One launched, there are a couple of different ways people have managed to do some calculations and figure out just how popular the device has been. On the most recent Windows Weekly Podcast, Mary Jo Foley, Leo PaPorte and Paul Thurrott were talking about the popularity of Windows 10. Foley in particular was talking about 200 million Windows 10 devices that have gone online since that operating system launched.
Foley said she had source, which told her about 18 million of the 200 million number was made up of Xbox One consoles. While that number is one that Microsoft will never own up to, the 18 million would be in line with the two-to-one ration most industry analysts think is going on when it comes to the console wars.
In other words, while that 18 million is not a particularly great number when talking about the console wars, it’s still a number Microsoft can be a bit happy about. Microsoft has said that the Xbox One is outpacing sales of the Xbox 360 at the same time in its generation. Certainly the firm was happy about how popular the Xbox 360 was over the course of its still ongoing life cycle so the company might be holding out hope for a big run. Microsoft has said it’s excited about 2016 thanks in large part to its first party lineup. We’ll just have to wait and see whether it can get back into the fight.
