A Plague Tale: Innocence is an action adventure title developed by the France-based Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive.

Development

A Plague Tale: Innocence was first announced at E3 2017. It is being developed by France based development team, Asobo Studio.

It was confirmed in January 2019 that the game would be releasing on May 14 of that year.

The developers have mentioned that though the game’s setting and story are historically inspired, they have not stuck to historical accuracy, with things such as the rat swarms in the games having slightly supernatural elements. During development, the developers looked at paintings from the era for inspiration of environmental design in the game, which they reflected in the environments of the game, which lack completely in hygiene, as well as the game’s lighting techniques. The developers also visited actual French villages with medieval history to study layouts and streets.

Story

A Plague Tale: Innocence is set in 14th century France during the Hundred Years’ War and the Great Plague, and focuses on young siblings Amicia, and her younger brother Hugo, with Amicia being the playable character. Amicia and Hugo are on the run from the soldiers of the Inquisition after their parents are killed, with the Inquisition hunting down stragglers, while also having to contend with deadly swarms of plague carrying rats. On a harrowing journey to expose dark secrets, Amicia must protect Hugo, as the two learn to trust each other.

The story focuses on themes such as innocence and family, with Amicia an Hugo being distant from each other as the game begins and being forced to come together under drastic circumstances.

Gameplay

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a narrative driven action adventure titles that features gameplay elements from adventure, stealth, and action titles. During gameplay, Hugo will be controller by AI, while players will take control of Amicia. Hugo will automatically follow Amicia, but the players can give Hugo commands to stay in place or hide in specific spots.

During stealth sections, players have to contend with protecting Hugo as well as dealing with enemy soldiers, while dynamic rat swarms also have a huge role to play. If Hugo is left in one place for too long, he will start to panic, and in a panicked state could make noises that attract enemies to him, which is something players are tasked with managing.

Rats are a major threat that players have to contend with. Rats can be kept at bay using fire. Rats can also be directed toward enemy soldiers in certain situations, while at times players are tasked with solving survival oriented puzzles to get past rat swarms an soldiers alike. Amicia is armed with a slingshot, which she can use to stun guards, or manipulate objects in the environment (such as lowering drawbridges). Players can also craft special ammunition for the slingshot, such as fire-infused rocks which can be used to alight braziers and torches from a distance as a way to get through rat swarms. The sling can also be upgraded to improve aspects such as its range, its power, and its stealthiness. If the player comes in contact with a swarms, rats start climbing on top of Amicia, and players have a short window to get into the radius of a light source to scare them off.

Beyond the sling, Amicia will also be able to use various other kinds of alchemy-based tools to help with survival, puzzle solving, and stealth. Throughout the game, Amicia and Hugo also meet several other children, who not only serve as characters in the story, but also help to upgrade and power up Amicia’s weapons, as well as crafting new items. One character is an alchemy expert who can teach the player new recipes to craft items.

Amicia’s gear can also be upgraded, while Hugo’s gear also has limited upgrades available. The game will have over ten chapters in total, and the developers have confirmed that its story will take players roughly between twelve to fifteen hours to finish. The developers have also confirmed that there will be no support for mods or a photo mode in the game at launch.
