Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Takes Shots At EA’s Infamous “Pride and Accomplishment” Quote

A character in Ubisoft's latest RPG admonishes the protagonist for wanting to "pay to win".

One of the biggest controversies to be kicked up in the industry last year (or perhaps even the entire generation) was the one surrounding Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and its usage of loot boxes. The game’s monetization policies were criticized by many, and referred to as predatory, only for an EA executive to later defend their decision to have them in the game by saying that these would invoke “a sense of pride and accomplishment” in the player.

This comment was made on Reddit, and quickly went on to become among the most downvoted comments across the entire site, ever– that should give you an idea of just out of touch with reality it really was. Of course, it went on to become a meme as well- you should expect nothing less from the internet. Countless people have, in some way or another, poked fun at the “pride and accomplishment” phrase, and rightly so. And now it seems Ubisoft have joined in on the fun as well.

In the video below, uploaded by YouTube user “Ciekawostki ze świata gier” (via ResetEra), you can see Assassin’s Creed Odyssey taking shots at the infamous phrase. Be warned of spoilers. Without giving too much away, the quest in question sees Kassandra taking part in a trial of sorts, upon completing which she would be rewarded with a token that proves her success. Kassandra asks the character running the trial if she can purchase the token instead, who goes on to admonish her for wanting to “pay to win”, following which he delivers the punchline. It’s most effective if you watch it for yourself- the video’s timestamped.
