Digital Illusions CE or DICE, currently developing Battlefield 4 for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 is looking for a master thesis student to help implement Oculus Rift support into the company’s propriety Frostbite engine.
The position is unpaid and will require association with a university’s master thesis program. Applicants will be “adding basic support in existing technology” and including modifications to “better fit first person games” along with “reducing latency” and “stereoscopic issues” (think stereoscopic 3D a la ViewD).
They should also have experience in C++ programming, knowledge about VR technology and rendering. Other tasks include exploring “existing research for relevant subjects” along with investigating and implementing “techniques for improving user experience”.
Other games slated to include the new Frostbite 3 engine include Dragon Age III: Inquisition and Mass Effect 4. It will be interesting to see how Oculus Rift fits into those games, if at all, but the appeal of Battlefield 4 through VR goggles should be enough for now.
