Borderlands 4 PC Update Addresses Crashes Caused by GPU, Animations and Collision

The update also brings with it fixes for some smaller bug, including a progression blocker that could potentially cause a quest to fail.

In light of several performance and technical issues faced by recently-released co-op looter shooter Borderlands 4, developer Gearbox Entertainment has released an update to smooth over some of the most pressing issues for the game. There is no new content released for Borderlands 4. Rather, the update brings with it a few minor bug fixes for gameplay and progression, while also addressing some crashes.

On the stability side of things, the update brought in fixes to crashes that are related to character and enemy animation states, audio, and collision checks. For PC players, various GPU-related crashes have also gotten a fix with this update. As for some of the smaller fixes, the most important one there is a progression blocker for the mission Talk to Zadra that has been fixed, and players will no longer face an issue where the Reward Center would stop working after the Gilded Glory Pack rewards were claimed. Along with this, the studio has also revealed its plans for weekly updates to Borderlands 4, which will bring with them changes to the Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine, including its location, a Weekly Big Encore boss that offers a more challenging version of a pre-existing boss, and Weekly Wildcard Missions.

Gearbox had also previously confirmed that it was working on an update for consoles that would bring with it a field of view slider, with the studio noting that it is currently going through internal testing. The studio is also investigating performance issues faced by console players.

Poor performance on PS5 and PS5 Pro was noted as being “known issue” by studio head Randy Pitchford, who recommended that players should restart Borderlands 4 if their performance starts to dip to fix issues for. These issues are speculated by players to be related to a memory leak in Borderlands 4, which would fall in line with the performance only starting to dip after some time had been spent playing the title.

As for the PC version of Borderlands 4, Pitchford had written out a lengthy series of posts on social media where he said that PC players were expecting too much of the game, and that those unhappy with the trade-offs they might have to make to find a balance between visual fidelity and frame rate should get refund.

“You can do whatever you want,” wrote Pitchford. “The game is the game. Please get a refund from Steam if you aren’t happy with it. You made an analogy to a vehicle. I would not put a Ferrari engine in a monster truck and expect it to drive like a Ferrari. If you tell me about your specification, I can help you optimize your performance.”

Borderlands 4 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3. Check out our review for more details.
