Those who frequently play multiplayer-focused games on PC won’t be strangers to titles requiring phone numbers for ranked play every now and then, but Activision seems to be taking it a step too far with its new releases. Recently, Overwatch 2 has received plenty of flak for requiring players to link accounts with their phone numbers to even be able to access the game, which is made even worse by the fact that many prepaid phones are restricted from doing that.
It seems, however, that another upcoming Activision-published game is going down that same road. As spotted by PC Gamer, the “Phone Notifications” page on Battle.net says that just like Overwatch 2, anyone playing the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (or even its predecessor with a newly created account) will have to deal with the same phone number restrictions. Whether or not Activision will end up making some alterations in here in the lead up to the first person shooter’s launch, especially given all the troubles that Overwatch 2 seems to be facing, remains to be seen.
