Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming soon, and it’s no doubt going to be one of the biggest games of the year. Those looking forward to it are, of course, looking forward to getting into the frantic multiplayer that has helped turn the series into the juggernaut it is today. But some people are also dreading what type of monetization it will include. Developer Infinity Ward has said there’s no loot boxes (which is a hot button topic for many today), but people are still pretty skeptical. Well, Activision has stepped in to try and reassure people it’s true.
In an open letter, the publisher promises that there’s not going to be a loot box system. Instead, it seems the game will feature a battle pass system similar to the likes of Fortnite or Apex Legends, along with the promise that you can earn everything through playing the game.
“We are introducing a new Battle Pass system, not a loot box system,” Activision writes. “All functional content that has an impact on game balance, such as base weapons and attachments, can be unlocked simply by playing the game.
“The new Battle Pass system will allow players to see the content that they are earning or buying. Battle Passes will launch timed to new, post-launch live seasons, so you can unlock cool new Modern Warfare-themed content that matches each season.”
If you’re still skeptical, that’s not unreasonable. You’ll notice that nowhere in that letter do they explicitly state there won’t be loot boxes ever, and Activision has been infamous for adding loot boxes after a game’s launch, which happened with the last several Call of Duty titles, as well as Crash Team Racing. Whether Modern Warfare will stay truly loot box free is something we’ll just have to wait and see about.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches October 25th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s also available for pre-loading on some platforms now.
