Earlier this year, reports claimed that for the first time in nearly two decades, Call of Duty’s annual release cycle will be disrupted in 2023, with Activision allegedly deciding not to release new premium entry in its first person shooter franchise next year. Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any new Call of Duty content whatsoever- in fact, it looks like there will even be paid new content.
That’s what Activision has confirmed during its recent quarterly fiscal briefing that it has “new premium content planned for 2023 and beyond” for the Call of Duty franchise. That statement, of course, isn’t very specific- new premium content doesn’t necessarily mean new game, and could also be referring to new paid DLC for this year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Recent reports have also claimed that developer Infinity Ward has two full years of content planned for the game in lieu of a new Call of Duty game in 2023.
Meanwhile, reports have also claimed that a standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game is in development, which could potentially be used to fill out that gap year as well. Meanwhile, where free-to-play content is concerned, the next Warzone game is coming later this year, while a separate mobile Warzone title is also in the works.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, meanwhile, launches on October 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
