Chris Roberts’s Star Citizen Now At $9 Million in Funding

The open space shooter just keeps getting bigger.

Together with funds accrued from Kickstarter and direct funding, Cloud Imperium Games has garnered about $9,061,882 for their upcoming open space shooter Star Citizen, which is also Chris Roberts first game in a long, long while.

Though the developers raised about $2,134,374 from the crowd-funding site, it’s the contributions to Robert Space Industries from over 132,000 fans that has provided an additional $6,927,508 for the game.

On the website, the developer wrote that, “Publishers are useful in the old physical distribution world, but the Internet is the great equalizer. Notch didn’t need a publisher to reach 20-million Minecraft fans. Riot games didn’t need a publisher to reach 30-million League of Legends players, and Wargaming.net didn’t need a publisher to reach 20-million World of Tanks gamers.”

Cloud Imperium recently opened a new office in Santa Monica, and plans to add 20 new team members for the development of the game. Meanwhile, Kickstarter slinks away into the night, whispering “My job is done here”.
