Cliff Bleszinski: Microsoft Were Not Big Fans of the Cover-Based Gameplay of Gears of War

Multiplayer was almost left out as well.

Gears of War is one of those iconic games that many players who owned a Xbox in the last ten years have played it in one form or another. With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine there was a period when the game was having a really hard time getting off the ground.

The title’s developer Cliff Bleszinski revealed a number of features that almost didn’t make the game. Among those features, according to IGN, the entire concept of a cover based shooter was almost changed up, because Microsoft wasn’t a big fan.

“We were under intense pressure from Microsoft to get this game out for holiday, doing the E3 demos and all that, and they didn’t really think the cover-based gameplay would be any fun,” Bleszinski stated.

He also said that he and producer Rod Fergusson often had disagreements about what should go into the multiplayer maps. It appears those disagreements were hashed out, considering the game series is still going strong. So strong that Gears of War 4 is coming out later this year.
