Cuphead Goes “Double Platinum”, Sells 2 Million Copies

Studio MDHR's classy run and gun platformer crosses another milestone in less than three months.

Studio MDHR’s Cuphead has achieved another sales milestone, selling two million copies since launching on September 29th. The news was announced by the studio on its official website with co-head Chad Moldenhauer saying that, “Even in our wildest dreams, we never thought our crazy little characters would be embraced by this many fans from around the world and we are continuously humbled by your support.”

“So to everyone who has drawn fan art, composed memes, performed songs, conquered challenge runs, streamed their playthrough, or just played Cuphead and had a good time, we love and appreciate all of you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Cuphead was lauded for its aesthetic, music, presentation and boss battle design. However, it gained enough notoriety for its difficulty as well with many calling it the “Dark Souls of the run and gun platformer genre” (I prefer to compare it to games like Mega Man Zero).

The challenging nature of the game led to its charm though. As we pointed out in our official review, the over-the-top animation style lent well to recognizing enemy patterns and attacks, besides immersing us in the atmosphere of a 1930s Fleischer cartoon.

The developer has discussed a potential follow-up in the future though there’s not much more information to go by since it’s so early. Cuphead is currently available for Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam on PC.
