Dead Island’s Success Due to “Co-op Gameplay”

Dead Island created quite a bit of hype with it’s “Family” trailer, but according to developers Deep Silver, this wasn’t the prime reason for the game’s success.

Executive producer Guido Eickmeyer said, “People were insisting we have to go on that direction – we have to have a game like the trailer. Doing scripted story games requires a ton of money. Our answer was, well, no. We don’t have to, because our resources can’t do it. We can’t do a game like the trailer.”

It was actually the co-op experience that’s rocketed the game to 4 million sales across all platforms, with over 6500 years of co-op play logged thus far online.

“This is why people are buying it months later; this is why people love the game; this is why we have great reviews from users. It is the most exciting co-op experience that is on the market,” says Eickmeyer.

Here’s hoping they have another success story in today’s AAA-crowded environment.
