Dead Space has been on ice for a decade, but the franchise is back, and back with a bang. The Dead Space remake is out now, launching on the back of widespread hype and anticipation, and unsurprisingly, it seems like people who’ve been looking forward to the game are already jumping in in droves. Especially on Steam, it looks like the game has got off to a solid start.
At the time of writing, as per SteamDB, the Dead Space remake has hit a peak concurrent user count of 25,084 players on Steam, within just hours of releasing. That far outmatches the numbers managed by any previous Dead Space release- though it’s worth pointing out that Steam was a much smaller platform back when they launched, and didn’t account for as much of the PC userbase as it does now.
Of course, Dead Space’s numbers aren’t in the same category as, say, something like Resident Evil 2, though the latter obviously had way more cache backing it up when it launched in 2019. A fairer comparison would probably be Resident Evil 7, which, like Dead Space, was also a hardcore survival horror experience launching in a series that had lost a great deal of clout over the years until its launch. That, interestingly, has an all-time concurrent user count peak of 20,449 players.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that these numbers don’t represent the game’s complete player base on the platform, seeing as it is also available on PC via EA Play and the Epic Games Store. Presumably, Dead Space is enjoying even stronger numbers when all platforms, including the consoles, are taken into account, but until we have to wait for official word on that from EA, it’s hard to be sure.
The game certainly merits success. In our review, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “Dead Space is one of the best survival horror games ever made, and one of the greatest remakes of all time. It takes a masterpiece of the genre and allows its biggest strengths to shine brighter than they ever have, while also improving upon it in meaningful ways with smart changes and additions. Motive Studio has delivered an instant classic and a true giant of the genre.” Read the full review through here.
Dead Space is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
