Death Stranding Won’t Divide Players As Winners Or Losers – Hideo Kojima

This is not a game about dividing players between winners and losers.

We’ve heard a lot about how Hideo Kojima is going to try new things in terms of gameplay and game design in his upcoming Death Stranding, but everything that has been said so far has been pretty vague. Hideo Kojima has given us another piece of information to chew on, and while it isn’t meaty, it’s certainly quite interesting. He says that while video games have till now mostly been about players trying to fight each other with sticks, Death Stranding is not going to do that.

“We are ready for a game not based on competition, but on the rope that will bring good to the player and make connections,” Kojima wrote in a piece for Rolling Stone. “We don’t need a game about dividing players between winners and losers, but about creating connections at a different level.” Kojima says that he wants to build a new kind of game, that video games have been sticking to the concept of killing enemies with weapons.

Apparently, the Metal Gear creator wants to change this concept. He’s likened what he’s doing to what Christopher Nolan did with his latest movie, Dunkirk, saying that he wants to toy with new concepts and ideas and make something very different. How this is implemented remains to be seen, but quite honestly, if Hideo Kojima has set his mind to it, it’s no doubt going to be an interesting experience, at the very least.
