The game is also being brought to the PS4 and the Xbox One and Codemasters announced shortly after the digital release that it would also be releasing a physical copy of the PC version. The early release version was greenlit on April 27, 2015. The full versions of the game that will be playable on the Xbox One and PS4 will be released on April 5, 2016 alongside the physical version of the PC game.
Development
DiRT Rally is developed by British video game developer Codemasters and the company is using their own in-house engine known as an Ego engine. Development on the game actually began with a relatively small team of developers. The production on this game started immediately following the release of the company’s 2012 video game Dirt: Showdown. Codemasters has said that with this particular game, it wanted to put together an actual racing simulation. The team says it started by prototyping a handling model and creating tracks based on map data it had gathered over the years. In order to be even more realistic the developers are employing a different physics model from previous titles. This particular engine was rebuilt from the ground up.
An early version of DiRT Rally was shown off to journalists in late 2013, as a kind of teaser but the game wasn’t officially announced until April 27, 2015. It was released later that day through Steam as an early access title. Paul Coleman, the game’s director released a statement alongside the game saying he and his team felt is was important to release an unfinished version of the title so that the development team could get early feedback on it from players. Once the game was released as an early access title, Codemasters announced its intention to release new cars, locations, and game modes on a monthly basis while also making a number of gameplay tweaks along the way.
One of those new content updates came on May 26, 2015 as part of the Pikes Peak Pack. This content update included a track through the notorious Hillclimb terrain, as well as three new cars in addition to the ones that were already available in the game. On June 29, 2015 yet another update pack was released for free into the early access build of the game. This new content brings a new tarmac rally track that is set in Baumholder, Germany. This is the first tarmac rally track that was added to the game. Five new cars were also added to the game with this content update. On August 3, 2015 the developers announced they had entered into a contract with FIA, one of the fastest growing Rally racing leagues in the world. With this agreement, the game was able to add a number of new tracks as well as several new cars.
On November 2, 2015, the developers announced yet another new content update with the addition of several specific cars as well as a certain class of car included in the game. Along with the new cars, the development team announced a number of tweaks to the game including those that were specifically requested by the player community. These changes include the addition of stage distances & elevations. Manual headlights and windscreen wipers were added too and the company said that there were also a number of fixes included in the update.
The full version of the game was released through steam for the PC on December 7, 2015 with the expectation that the game would be coming to consoles later. On February 2, 2016, Codemasters announced the addition of several new cars to the PC version of the game and confirmed console versions were on the way as well. The company set the release date for the PS4, Xbox One and retail version of the PC DVD is coming on April 5, 2016.
Story
There is not a real story in DiRT Rally as this is a racing game that focuses almost entirely on the tracks. There are a number of different races that can be won, on a number of different tracks. Players can choose from a number of different cars to drive.
Gameplay
Players in the game compete in timed stages and races through a variety of different tracks in all different parts of the world. Among the specific tracks that are included in the game are the Hillclimb track is one track that was added early on in the process and is set in Pikes Peak, Colorado. According to the developers, the track has “treacherous twists and turns” that drivers will have to negotiate as they work their way up the Rocky Mountains. The Tarmac track in Germany was added to the game in order to give players a different feel than any other track in the game. Most of the other tracks in the game were made of dirt, which gave drivers less control when it came to sharp turns. The tarmac, according to the developers gives drivers a completely different feel when they are driving on that track. Two other tracks that are allowing drivers to try them out are the Lydden Hill, United Kingdom and Höljes, Sweden.
The agreement with FIA means that there are also official FIA drivers and there will be an official circuit to run with these cars and drivers. Among the game modes that are included in this title are online championship races as well as leagues where players can basically team up with their friends and actually advance thanks to the success of those friends.
