In development since 2002 and public alpha since 2006, Bay 12 Games’ Dwarf Fortress is now available on Steam and itch.io. It’s more than just a release on Valve’s platform, as the Steam Edition features vastly improved visuals, mouse support, and much more. Check out the release trailer below.
Along with a new pixel art tileset, this version includes a tutorial for players new to the title. A new interface and menus are also available for easier navigation, along with a new soundtrack and sound effects. It’s still an intimidating experience where anything could go wrong, but at least it’s more accessible now.
Dwarf Fortress launches with Fortress and Legends modes but will add Adventure and Arena modes “very soon.” Time is subjective, though, so don’t expect them immediately. Bay 12 is also working on map system improvements for procedurally generated myths and magic systems which may take months “or longer.” Stay tuned in the meantime for further updates.
