Dynasty Warriors 9 is an upcoming hack and slash title from Omega Force that promises to update the very familiar Warriors formula with several new innovations. Putting more of a focus on strategy and map control, the player is now given open world environments and different missions to pursue as they decide how to advance. The game is launching for PlayStation 4 only in Japan on February 8, 2018 and on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC on February 18, 2018.
Development
Disappointed at the reception their previous title received, the team immediately began brainstorming on how they can evolve the series following the critically panned Dynasty Warriors 8. In May 2016, Koei Tecmo’s executive officer Kenichi Ogasawara would say in an interview to Famitsu that “the evolution between Dynasty Warriors 7 to 8 was insufficient”.
During development, the decision was made to move the series from its segmented battlefields into an open world structure. Players can move about on foot, horseback or over water through a fully traversable feudal China. Players will exit, enter and do business within cities and prepare themselves for skirmishes.
The game was revealed during a broadcast held by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia, in which among other games, Dynasty Warriors 9 was introduced. The announced changes from established series convention would continue to be discussed over the next several months, such as the move to open world, and the combat systems getting an overhaul.
All 83 playable characters from Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires are set to appear in the new game.
Story
While the finer details of the story are still hidden to us, Koei Tecmo has still revealed some details about the story, including how it will be structured. The story mode will be presented over 10 chapters, each stopping at a major point when the balance of power in the war changes and the actions the player is allowed to take are altered. The beginning of the game starts with commanding the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the game will continue through to the end of the ultimate reunification of China.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Dynasty Warriors 9 is receiving a major shake up thanks to key alterations to the tired formula. The classic combat system, where players create differing combos through stringing together different inputs of light attack and heavy attack will receive an undiscussed revision, shaking the very core of the series, which hopefully will come with some slightly more involved systems.
The game remains a Dynasty Warriors title, with generals sweeping aside 20 men with a single swing of a spear, but instead of the closed off arenas of the previous games, players move around China in an open world environment. They can explore cities, take on side missions which will weaken the defenses around main missions and both time and weather systems now play a part, causing changes to enemy behaviour such as lower sight while its nighttime, suggesting a higher focus on the strategy elements of the series than in the past.
Time in the story will only advance upon the completion of main missions, allowing the player leeway in maintaining their Warriors and completing side missions to make the next main missions easier.
Characters
All 83 characters from the previous Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires title have been confirmed to appear in Dynasty Warriors 9. A bio for each of them is well beyond the scope of this wiki, and story details haven’t been revealed yet. However, while highly fictionalized we do know who some of the new characters available will be and their historical inspirations, which we will introduce using this space. Gamingbolt will update this wiki in the future with more plot relevant bios when we have them.
For the Cao Wei army, Man Chong was a general of the state during the period who is best known for his defense of the city of Hefei from the rival Wu state between 230 and 235. Cao Xiu was a distant relative of Cao Cao and grew from a small time officer to a provincial level military commander and fought against Wu numerous times, dying in 228 after the Battle of Shiting. Xun You was a statesman and advisor to warlord Can Cao, While he wasn’t known for battlefield actions himself, he lead Cao Cao to many victories. The game will likely fictionalize some kind of combat role for Xun You.
The rival Wu nation adds Cheng Pu and Xu Sheng to their list. Cheng Pu is a longtime military general under warlord Sun Quan, who has lots of experience thanks to his work with Quan’s two predecessors. Xu Sheng was known for his loyalty to his master, and confidence on the battlefield.
For the Shu army, the one current addition is actually a fictional character, though prominent in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms which covers the same period as Dynasty Warriors 9. Zhou Cang was a strong warrior who found himself caught up in almost every side of the war, but would swear loyalty to General Guan Yu after the two encounter each other on a mountain road.
Within the Jin army, Xin Xianying was a prominent advisor who kept her army generals from attacking out of emotion and a level headed woman in general. There’s not a lot to suggest she had a battlefield presence, but this is where the games fictionalization usually comes in.
Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
