The upcoming Dynasty Warrior: Origins is looking like a return to form for Koei Tecmo’s action franchise in many ways (or so we hope, at any rate), and its renewed focused on tactical action as compared to some of the series’ more recent outings has been one of the primary reasons for that. Unsurprisingly, a return to that brand of gameplay was very much part of developer Omega Force’s mission statement for the game.
Speaking in a recent interview with The Gamer, series producer Tomkohiko Sho revealed that getting “back to the basics” and focusing on tactical action – something that recent entries have focused less on – was what Omega Force wanted to do first and foremost with Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
“After the release of Dynasty Warriors 9, we had a lot of discussions about what we should do with Dynasty Warriors and where we wanted to take the series,” Sho said. “From the very first game of the current Dynasty Warriors series, Dynasty Warriors 2 onwards, the theme is tactical action, and we really wanted to be able to express that in its fullest. That’s one of the key features of the series, and I think maybe in the past ten years of the Dynasty Warriors series, since Dynasty Warriors 9 and the more recent games, the tactical part was a little bit on the lower side. It was more focused on action.”
Of course, a back-to-the-basics approach won’t necessarily mean a smaller-scale experience. As Sho explained during the same interview, Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ large-scale battles could only have been possible on modern hardware. Read more on that through here.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins launches on January 17, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
