Fallout 4 Sold More Digital Copies Than Physical at Launch

"That's a big change" according to director Todd Howard.

Bethesda Softworks’ Fallout 4 was a best-seller when it launched with 12 million copies shipping at launch time. While it had the greatest day one sales for a launch in 2015, it’s interesting to note that the game sold more digitally than at physical retail.

This is according to game director Todd Howard who told Game Informer that, “One of the things that is amazing: Fallout 4 sold more day one digitally than at retail. That’s a big change.”

Though it’s not exactly the most played game on Steam right now, there are still 24,229 current players with a peak of 38,344 players today. That’s not bad considering the game released more than three months later and offers a single-player campaign only.

Actual sales figures for Fallout 4 are yet to be revealed but with the Season Pass content releasing from next month and more content expected throughout the year, it doesn’t seem like Bethesda is worrying about a built-in audience. What are your thoughts on the game’s digital sales outpacing retail? Let us know in the comments.
