Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Announced, Launches in Early 2026

Offering a full overhaul of the 2003 psychological horror title, the remake includes new mechanics like "Holding Hands With Mayu."

While previous Fatal Frame releases have been remasters, Koei Tecmo has announced the first full remake in the franchise – Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly. Launching in early 2026, it’s developed by Team Ninja and will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out the first trailer below.

Originally released in 2003, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is the most critically acclaimed entry in the series. It follows Mio and Mayu Amakura, twin sisters who venture to a mysterious village to confront their past. The remake offers improved visuals, audio design, controls and gameplay mechanics.

While the focus (no pun intended) remains on the Camera Obscura, used to fend off hostile spirits, there’s also “Holding Hands With Mayu,” a new addition that allows for experiencing “the deep bond between the sisters.”
