2019 was a rather interesting year for physical game sales in the UK. As GamesIndustry.biz notes, total physical sales dropped by 19.8 percent. Perhaps more significant is that this is the first time sales have dropped since 2012 in the region. Nevertheless, EA’s FIFA 20 managed to win out in physical sales, as per Gfk Chart-Track.
The title sold 1.5 million copies, which is down from FIFA 19’s 1.9 million copies in the same period of time. In second place, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold 1.92 million copies. The gulf between second and third place is fairly wide – Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, ranked in third, only sold 465,062 games last year.
This was followed by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in fourth place with 438,465 copies sold and Red Dead Redemption 2 in fifth with 306,392 copies sold. Check out the full top ten with sales numbers below. Given that this console generation is coming to an end, perhaps the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X will spur sales? We’ll find out when they launch in Holiday 2020.
